Unsung Heroes For The Ravens

16 posts in this topic

Hi all, I'm a Steelers fan and just want to say that yesterday was a typical Steelers/Ravens game and I am not upset about the outcome. Did the Steelers play good enough to win, Yes. But the Ravens played better and more consistent on Offense and that's why you guys had two scoring drives in the last 3 minutes and put yourself into the position to win. Our offense had the chance to run out the clock regardless if they were backed up to the 3 yard line and couldn't pull it off.

Anyways, that's off topic, what I wanted to say is that even though the scoreboard reflected a typical Steelers/Ravens score it wasn't really the same players for the Ravens who helped pull out a victory like in years past. So here are some unsung heroes from the Ravens who typically don't have a big hand in beating the Steelers. (These are players who may be a good player for the Ravens in other games but typically don't play as good against the Steelers)

1.) Offensive Line - I was going to put Flacco first but the way Woodley and Harrison typical eat up the Ravens O-line and disrupt Flaccos mojo I need to say this was the biggest surprise for me. The O-line may not have opened up many running lanes but to be able to give Joe the time that they did, that was the reason for this victory and they are my #1 Unsung Hero of the game.

2.)Joe Flacco, the guy was money all day, sharp crisp out patterns to Bouldin and Mason, that trio made the two deep coverage look like swiss cheese on some drives. He also learned how to play Harrison's outside rush, the past 2 years, Flacco would drop too deep into the pocket and give Harrison a better angle. If you noticed yesterday there were at least 3 or 4 occasions where Flacco was further up in the pocket and Oher just pushed Harrison around him. I could go on about Flaccos performance but good for him

3.) Ladarius Webb, the dude was in position allllll day vs Wallace. I mean that one ball that he broke up where Mikey actually had it in his mittens was a game changer.

Now for the players on the Steelers who typically play like all pros against the Ravens but didn't look so good. (I'll keep it short since this isn't a Steelers forum)

1.) Harrison/Woodley, those guys were contained all day.
2.) Troy, I don't recall hearing his name all game, but you can't expect him to have an all pro game every game.
3.) Hines, even though he doesn't usually have huge statistics, he is a disturbance but didn't have the effect today.

Either way, glad to see there were no significant injuries on either side. Good game Ravens and any Steeler fans who complain about being 3-1 without Ben need to relax and realize there are still 12 games left in the season.

Some very valid points, It shall definitely be interesting to see who steps up in our next meeting as well. Lardarius Webb shocked me though because Mike Wallace could be an olympic sprinter if he wanted to and somehow webb maintained some great coverage.

The O line played awesome! I cant believe how well the contained Harrison and Woodley all day. I expected much more rush from you all.

Cant believe we actually have quality steeler fans on our site. Troy was actually covering Boldin which was why he didnt get as many touchs as he might of had you had a corner on him.

My unsung hero was Todd Heap tho because he was picking up blitz all day an still found ways to move the chains.

I have to tip my hat to the ravens o-line. They have received alot of heat recently but stepped up yesterday. The steelers only had 1 sack which came from Casey Hampton. They gave Joe the time he needed to deliver mostly good passes, especially the last ine.

I don't remember hearing Troy's name much either. I think he had to play more coverage than he likes given all of the big name receivers we have. Troy normally likes to stomp around the line of scrimmage and make plays but in this case I think he knew he had to play more of a typical safety role.

Classy post. Good game! Normally the Steelers usually win games in this fashion. It was nice to be the spoiler this time.

Let's not forget, there was no Santonio Holmes this year but I really don't think that was the difference in this game with Batch at QB.

You guys need the bye week fast to get your rb's healthy. Good thing you guys had as much depth as you did at that position.

It's funny how at the beginning of the season everyone was saying week 6 is a great time for Ben to come back because it's the Brownies. But the way the Browns have been playing, they kind of scare me.

If you don't notice by now, the Steelers defense relies on qb pressure, without that the secondary struggles. With the solid O-line that Cleveland has, that scares me because Seneca Wallace will have some time to throw some passes.

Lets hope the Brownies screw up and put Delhomme back in when he's healthy.

I think Cleveland has a seriously under rated Oline...theyre hands down the best unit in the AFC North.

Believe me, I'm so glad the Steelers traded Holmes away and that he was not on the field in Week 1. That dude was a Raven-killer, he always found ways to make plays against us and make our DBs look even worse than they were.. So glad to have him gone.

The RBs should be okay, Willis and LeRon should recover fully by Sunday. Ray's may take a little longer, with the lingering nature of his injury but he should improve daily barring any major setbacks.

And the Steelers should handle the Browns. At home, the Steelers are a tough team to beat. Those towels must have some kind of magic. Just contain Josh Cribbs and Peyton Hillis; Seneca Wallace doesn't scare anyone. Their OL is a dominant force but so is the Steelers DL. If they play up to their potential, this could be a great, physical game. (Hopefully with many injuries on both sides :P)

I have to echo other Ravens fans - classy post. It echoes the comments made by a Pitt fan I had the pleasure of sitting next to while watching the game yesterday. He was constantly commenting on the time Joe had to throw, that Pitt needed a sack, etc.,etc. He also noticed that Troy was not mentioned and he kept saying they needed a D touchdown. It was a great, typical Steelers/Ravens game and if we can keep our guys healthy, we could get Reed, Gaither, and Stallworth back by the bye week.

True but two factors plays in that. First, Ladarius Webb isn't the slowest player, him and Yamon Figurs were some of our fastest players. He just isn't faster than Wallace. Secondly, as the commentators stated Ladarius Webb played off of him for a while that's why we kept blitzing to make Batch have to drop the ball beneath and the only time he tried for the long ball was when a guy on our team jumped offsides then Batch did the smart thing and went for it all.

If anyone read a post I made in the gameday thread before the game started when someone asked about what type of QB Batch is and all Steelers fans know that Batch is a smart accurate QB. (As you can tell by the throw to Randle El) But his problem is his arm isn't strong enough to throw the ball far enough for Wallace. I know that two plays were to the end zone so that limited the distance but that also gives the defender a break to know he has less field to cover.

It scares me in a good way when Ben gets back in there with Wallace and the revamped running game. (Even though we didn't tear it up yesterday it's better than what the Steelers did in the past against the Ravens.)

I seriously hope both teams are relatively healthy when we play again later in the year because I can almost guarantee that game will decide the division, baring any huge injuries for either team.

After watching Cincy yesterday, they are a mess even though on paper they should be a decent team. With Palmer, people think past accomplishments entitle you to being considered elite for the rest of your career which is obviously ridiculous. I think the Bengals lost their identity this year, after the success with Benson and the run game last year that really screwed with the offensive mentality of the Bengals. I know the offense racked up the yards but it all matter what you can do when the defense is smooshed up in that red zone area and not being able to run to get those hard yards will lead to a lot of field goals.

The only notable play I recall Polamalu making was when he blew up McGahee in the backfield for a six yard loss. Other than that, he only walked away with 4 tackles. Timmons is turning into one hell of a linebacker though, he's already 30 tackles away from his total number from last year. Harrison and Woodley may get the majority of the attention (fan wise, not player wise), but Timmons is definitely showing signs of being something great in that linebacker corp.

Todd Heap, he did amazing in pass protection. Shut Woodley down and picked up Polamalu a couple times when he came through, especially in our last drive when he was pass blocking on every down.

Guys, let's not forget Mason. He was making some unbelievable plays early in the game. Remember that 40-yard catch right after the Steelers scored their first TD?

And Jameel McClain. He was solid. Particularly on that pass he batted down and almost intercepted.
