Whats Wrong With Our Run D?

70 posts in this topic

All I know is that our run d needs to improve if we want to beat the steelers next week. It will not cut it if we don't stuff the run against the steelers

Very dissappointed in the Ravens defense today. I was expecting a shutout or maybe 2 field goals not 144 yards rushing from a fullback.
I agree! The team looks more like an 8-8 team than a playoff or Superbowl contender. The season is still early but the Ravens just struggled against a winless team.

I've come to think as our run D as a simple one. If the offense gets blockers up to Ray we usually aren't that successful. When Ray isn't blocked RB's have a helluva time.

I don't think our run D had a bad game so much as Hillis is a monster. In the second half, once they got his measure, they put a stop to him. To be fair, our D has not had a lot of experience stopping tanks. Now they do.

The Browns are not as bad as everyone thinks. Every game is different, their o-line outplayed our defense today. It happens.

I see your point. Especially divisional games, teams come out to play, regardless of the schedule. But I would disagree with you, the Browns are terrible. And we made them look good.

We were ranked 13th BEFORE this game. I don't want to think what we'll be ranked now. Granted, the Jets and Bengals are top run offenses but that never used to matter before.

Where's the penetration? Where are our guys getting off blocks? This game was tough to watch at times.
A great Cleveland offensive line and a freak 6' 1" 250 lbs running back that made Ray Lewis look like a pop warner linebacker at the goal line when he lunged at Hillis's slight hesitation..Did you see his arms? The guy moves well to..runs a little high, but he still has wiggle. Donut tummy LeRon needs to follow Hillis weight routine instead of saying mo carries, he should spend mo time watching film of Hillis's style.

The guy was a blast to watch...love his no nonsense up the middle runs. Our d line got pushed around a bit.

Wait til the steelers get a hold of us..ouch

We better start calling better defensive games....very conservative...very vanilla today.

The browns have improved alot in my opinion. Wallace is tough to sack and is actually a pretty good qb. The online is really good and cribbs is a beast. That RB i think took our defense by surprise. He is certainly a hard runner and knows how to finish a run. I think our d has alittle trouble against powerful runners. We should be ok and get better. But to say the browns are terrible i think is completely wrong.

Ya I saw that too, Ngata got washed or washed himself all the way down the line and left his gap uncovered, Ray tried to plug the gap himself but was alone. The 50 yard run by Hillis is on Ngata. But I want to see what Cody can do in the mddle, theres just things he can do that Gregg cant.
Yeah Ray was saying the problem was gap integrity, Ngata was freelancing a bit and took himself out of the play. The other big run I think it was Pryce who did the same thing and gave up his gap.

Nothing is wrong. They were playing coverage to keep Wallace from running wild. Something had to give. Plus their Run coverage was good.

Just like last week, better to get these mistakes out early to adjust for when the season goes on. They were able to adjust and stop Hillis for a lot of the second half, so not really something that we have to worry about I'm sure. The Browns line played great, but if our guys don't make those little mistakes, we would have probably force the Browns to be even more one dimensional. And maybe that would have led to a turnover

I hate when people think teams are pushovers simply because they're not as good. Browns beat the Steelers last year. these guys are pro for a reason. you can't win every single game (though thankfully we won today haha)

we should be no more embarrassed losing to the Browns than losing to any other team or any less happy because we beat a weaker team. a win is a win and a loss is a loss. this is straight pro football, not pro football mixed with high school football.

Considering that we've given up an average of 14 points per game, which is all that really matters, I'm really not concerned about our defense.

Yeah, I agree. We almost found out today why it's dangerous not to take every single opponent seriously.

Kelley Gregg gets blown off the ball on almost every play.
He was getting destroyed by Alex Mack and Cleveland's guards yesterday but really, how often does Buddy Lee get mauled?

Cleveland may have the best LT/LG/C combination in the NFL.

Joe Thomas, Eric Steinbach and Alex Mack are very, very good blockers in both the running and passing game.

There is a very big difference between beating the Browns and beating say the Colts or the Steelers, or even the Bengals for that matter. The 3 teams mentioned have perenially owned us, while darn near EVERYONE has perenially owned the Browns. What makes me more happier, destroying the Browns or squeaking one out against the Steelers? Ill take the squeaker anyday. Momentum going into and comming out of games plays a large roll in how teams perform week to week.

It is MUCH MUCH more emberassing loosing to say BUF or DET than it would be the Colts or the Steelers... how couldn't it be? Ask the players who they'd rather loose to. Especially for a team with such high aspirations comming in to the year.

Technically, in the regular season, beating the Browns matters more than beating the Colts.. if only slightly.

That is assuming that we and the Colts would not be fighting for a Wild Card spot. Because in that case it would be important to win AND deliver the Colts a loss

Just saying because the Browns are a divisional rival rather than just a conference opponent.

Run D is actually something I've been concerned about ever since week 1. We didn't really stop the Jets rushing attack, we just stopped them from getting first downs. We still gave up 5.6 ypc to Tomlinson and now like 7 ypc to Hillis. So from what I hear, Gregg is getting beat? Is Cody going to rotate into his spot?

yeah I know. Like Rex said, divisional games are like a game and a half. Not only are you competing with those teams for a playoff spot, but the first tie breaker to see who gets in the playoffs is divisional record

That's what I was saying. In reality, I'd rather beat both of them!

I can't help but think that most of the players were thinking ahead to Pittsburgh and were not as focused on the Browns as they should have been.

Not to criticize the coaching staff or the dedication of the players, but it's only natural to overlook an opponent that you manhandle perennially.

As long as the D doesn't allow Mendenhall to do what Hillis did they should be fine.

that doesn't negate the fact that everyone in the NFL are paid professionals and everyone should be taken seriously (which was what I was getting at). just because a weaker team loses more does not make them any less of an opponent. bigger chance of winning, sure, but acting like this was a no-brainer win is what bothers me.

I'm sure there will be a lot of focus placed on the run defense this week. I think our main goal will be to stop Mendenhall so that Charlie Batch will have to throw the Steelers to victory. I don't know about the rest of the season, but our run defense this Sunday should be stout, especially if we can work Cody into the rotation. I just hope Redding is okay.
