Whats Wrong With Our Run D?

70 posts in this topic

We were ranked 13th BEFORE this game. I don't want to think what we'll be ranked now. Granted, the Jets and Bengals are top run offenses but that never used to matter before.

Where's the penetration? Where are our guys getting off blocks? This game was tough to watch at times.

Cleveland's OL came to play today, the won at the line of scrimmage. They got blockers up on our linebackers in the first half but we figured out how to shut them down as the game went on.

Maybe slightly contributing is the fact that the Ravens also seem to have trouble with bigger backs. Brandon Jacobs, Cedric Benson, and now Peyton Hillis have all given us trouble in the past.. But, again, the Browns' OL played very well. They had a good game, you have to give them credit.

It was combination of poor gap integrity, guy's whiffing tackles and more importantly, the Browns' o-line generating a great push and Hillis running hard. Yes, the Ravens are very good against the run but there are times when an opposing o-line muscles up and and mauls them. We saw it when the Bengals came to Baltimore last season and it happened when the Ravens played the Giants in '08.

I'm not going to panic. The team should get a very good run-stuffer in Cody back next week and Ray and Co. will want to make up for their performance today by clamping down on the Steelers next week too.

I don't buy into the Cody/Gregg factor, I'm pretty sure Hillis' big run came from Ngata overpusuing and leaving a huge cutback lane, Ray got sealed and Hillis waltzed downfield.

What we need is some youth and size in the middle. Oh wait, we'll get that soon when Cody comes to play. Looking forward to that. Hillis made our run D an embarrassing shame today.

we never had problems stopping jerome bettis...and he was 300lbs. and we had no problems stopping eddie george.

it's the new age power backs that are built up like ray lewis we have trouble stopping. faster than a full back...and bigger than a traditional running back.

We'll be ready for Hillis next time.
Reminds me of what we said last year after game 1 vs the Bengals. We'll stop Benson next time. Hillis is a good runner in the AFC North.

Bettis was the last guy that we let run on us for 100+ in consecutive games. I'd say, yes, we did have a few problems with him.

Ya I saw that too, Ngata got washed or washed himself all the way down the line and left his gap uncovered, Ray tried to plug the gap himself but was alone. The 50 yard run by Hillis is on Ngata. But I want to see what Cody can do in the mddle, theres just things he can do that Gregg cant.

When is the last time we actually played either George or Bettis?

This is a different defense. They're still great, yes, but different. As I said, backs like Jacobs, Benson, and (apparently) Hillis give us problems. I don't know whether you're agreeing with my or what you are trying to dispute.

They're not so much the issue, though, it's much more a function of OL/DL play. We lost the battle at the line, early, and that gave them consistent positive yardage.

imma probably get bashed for this but ... Ngata the last two seasons hasnt played as well as he is capable of imo ... ever since hes gotten some mainstream attention he hasnt been wrecking havoc like he once was ... besides him our D line is old

Fast, strong fullbacks plus good O line protection is the reason why we got gauged.

But to me it doesn't matter if we're 17th in rush D or 1st. As long as we win games, I'm a happy camper.

He's no Benson, those big plays came off small mistakes on our part. It's not as simple as "put Cody in for Gregg because he's bigger".

The only thing that did it was Hillis using his power, and inexperience from some of our men. I saw Guys like Ellerbe and McClain especially pursuing Hillis and getting juked and just not having the experience and ability to bring him down when players like Lewis, Reed, and Johnson wouldn't have any trouble in the same situation

I'm not going to bash you but ask, what have you been watching? Ngata had a poor game today but he's been a big reason why teams generally don't run on the Ravens since he was drafted.

"Mainstream attention" for Haloti Ngata?

Only one defensive tackle in this league gets "mainstream attention", and it's for all of the wrong reasons..

Our defense looked fine. People think of the Browns as a team you can throw your helmet on the field with and automatically win. People forget the Browns have quite possibly one of the best o-lines in the NFL and two very good running backs. Our secondary isn't exactly stellar and the Ravens have a horrendous track record when it comes to playing mobile QB's who can throw on the run (ala Big Ben, who completes 93% of his passes on the Ravens when scrambling out of the pocket).

Our defense won't shut down offenses every week- which is why we developed a high powered offense. Some posters on the br.com forums need to drink some water and swallow down 2-3 chill pills.

I can't think of one defense that wouldn't have had a problem stopping Hillis. He's a very hard runner. We're fine, they just had the defense's number this game. It happens once every blue moon lol

Don't think there is much wrong with the Dfense. It's a divisional game and sometimes all bets are off. We got the win and Flacco put up some good numbers.
Cody is back next week for !#$%sburgh and that's the win we need!

Nothing is wrong with them they just had a bad game, just like our offense did last week. However, we got the W and that is all that matters.

I have to agree with Berad. Their line played excellent against us today. Their tackles and center were able to get a push by themselves freeing up the guards to take on our linebackers. I also thought we didn't tackle well today on more than a few occasions. We did get better by mid 3rd qtr. and I thought our D was awesome when we had them backed up on their 2 yd line.

Very dissappointed in the Ravens defense today. I was expecting a shutout or maybe 2 field goals not 144 yards rushing from a fullback.

Ok? The Browns have a better o-line than people give them credit for. And Hillis may be listed as a FB but as he showed today, he knows how to run the ball.

The defense scared me today...the Browns didn't do anything crazy today which should've gave up big yards...but low and behold we gave up bog yards..

The key word is consistency for this team

Their is no consistency with this Ravens team

It must have been Joe Flacco's fault, huh?

Do you realize the season is only three games in? Many facets on this team are consistent. The secondary, for one, has played at a high level. Our ST coverage has looked mostly solid. Running game is effective. There are a lot more, I could list them all, or you could just watch the games instead..
