222 posts in this topic

11 players who deserve to be on the list....

Unitas
Manning
Brown
Payton
Rice
Krause
LT
Montana
Reggie White
Hutson
Butkus

10 spots left....

Something tells me there will be a lot of discussion on a snub

I have a feeling it's going to be Butkus.

I wouldn't mind that, that would make Ray the greatest MLB of all time.
He already is in my opinion. No list is going to change that.

Agreed, but it adds a lot of leverage if a whole lot of NFL analysts agree in a debate. If someone argues with you, you can calmly just say "take a look at the top 100 list".

probably butkus. none of those guys deserve the snub though, i geuss thats why these lists are done though, to promote debate.

i've not seen a huge amount of Butkus stuff but the stuff i have seen and the high regard people hold him in, i'd say he deserves to make the list but i just can't see any of the other guys you mentioned not making it

I don't think they would have shown Butkus clips during Rays segment if he wasn't going to make it. Now, who do I think gets the snub? I have no idea....

thats a fair point.

but my theory is that all the QBs on that 11 man list will make it. there is no way LT, Payton, Jim Brown and Jerry Rice don't make it. and then krause has to make it as all time INT leader.

so that leaves White, Hutson and Butkus. so maybe hutson or white doesn't make it?

White has to make it considering he hasn't been on the list yet, the snub has to be either. Hutson and Butkus.

There's no way White doesn't make it. Hutson will probably get snubbed.

Looks like Ray does a segment on someone in the top 10, wonder who he does it on. Here's a quote from the preview.

"I tell my sons, he didn't just wake up and be like oh I'm good, no, he worked to be good".

For those interested, here's how the list was compiled thanks to Peter King:
Anyway, here's how the balloting went: 85 voters --owners, GMs, NFL executives and retired execs, coaches, owners, former coaches, broadcasters, media and Hall of Fame voters -- got a list of 260 players. We were asked to grade the players from 1 to 10 (with 10 being the best). When all the ballots were gathered, NFL Films tallied up the votes, and the 100 highest-rated players were ranked from 1 to 100 based on total points. For instance, if Johnny Unitas was given a 10 by 70 voters and a 9 by the other 15, his point total would have been 835. I have no idea about Unitas' point total; I use him only as an example. But you see how the things works.

I dont mean to hate, but why does the Media get votes for things like this and the HOF?

The stock answer is that they cover the game and aren't as biased as the players and coaches.

In reality though, I'd say they're just as biased as those who played or coached.

well the top 10 is announced tonight.

having seen this video: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/09000d5d81bd7930/Top-100-Omission-roundtable

i didn't realise shannon sharpe didn't make it! its either him or tony gonzalez who hold pretty much every TE record surely he makes it. its a very QB filled list and it could be argued atleast 4 or 5 of them could be replaced

Maybe the NFL wants to maintain a good relationship with them or something. I have wondered the same thing.

Defense really got screwed as Deion said. Only 37% of the list are defensive players? You can't tell me that of that many players who've played the game, there are twice as many great offensive players as defensive players. It's a significantly large percentage compared to the sample size.

If there were 100 players to play the game, and the top 10 had 7 guys on offense, that's fine. But of the amount of people in the history of football? That's like flipping a coin 1 million times and getting heads 700 thousand times. It just doesn't happen. There's a position bias.

Gonzo is on the list.
i meant that Sharpe should be on the list because him and Gonzalez hold all the TE records. the fact that there are other TEs on the list and Sharpe doesn't make it seems a bit unfair.

i agree, the saying has always been 'defense wins championships' but as we know offense sells tickets so i geuss they get more of the media fanfare. rediculous though

They just showed the WR's that have already been revealed and they only showed 6, there are 8 on the entire list of the top 100. They must have made a mistake because there can't be two WR's in the top 10, can there?
