The Black Towel Thing

10 posts in this topic

I'm always in favor of charity and a good cause but I have a few issues regarding the so called "blackout"
First I think it may have been a better time to do it for a game we were actually wearing the black uni's ? Duh! OK so I read both the piece in the Sun and the actual website for the Baltimoreblackout and I gather this person is trying to make this a tradition of sorts for every game. In theory a good idea but as I've said many times before a good fan base and a true fan does not need a prop or gimmick to get them fired up. It's is bad enough one game a season getting whipped in the side of the face by some yellow towel moron almost to the point of having to issue threats a few times in order to get them to stop being such a lame turd and now we are making a push for this occur the entire season on every play? That's an awesome idea NOT!!!
I'm sure you're a good fan or just a very savy businessman who indeed will probably make some decent coin off those semi impressive pieces of cloth but I vote no on this one and will continue raising the roof in 136 as the norm.

Well first of all... I agree with you about getting hit in the face. The seats are small enough as it is that you don't really have enough space if you have any bulk to you at all. Those seats are made for tiny little girls. So there's definitely not enough room for someone to stand and twirl a towel around without the towel and/or their arm hitting the person next to them. I don't care if people yell the entire game, if the people in front of me stand the entire game, and if the people behind me bang on the back of my seat to make noise when the defense in on the field. But I don't feel like getting hit by a towel.

Secondly... the last time the Ravens tried to do a "towel day" they used the cheapest towels possible and little pieces of fuzz were coming off the towels all game and getting in peoples' eyes. It sucked. If you're going to do towels, you have to get some quality plush ones that aren't going to be falling apart while being spun in the air.

Thirdly... it's kind of stupid to rip-off the most known thing about our division rival, the Steelers. I don't want to be thought of as trying to copy Pittsburgh. Ravens fans have always been known for their creative chants. We need to organize more of those. Have one endzone start a chant, and the other end zone finish the chant. Yes, this is kind of like college football(Let's go, HOKIES... and... WE ARE, Penn State). But hey, it's fun.

For the record, this thread is in reference to Willis McGahee's partnership with Baltimore Blackout, a local company selling black rally towels and matching black shirts; the proceeds benefit McGahee's charitable foundation.

Please note that, although this is for charity and the foundation belongs to a Baltimore Raven, no links to the product or stories advertising the product (the Sun's feature essentially serves as an advertisement) are permitted. We do not allow links promoting any charities or fundraisers, even those affiliated with individual Ravens; the logic is, if we allow the players' charities, then we'd also have to allow other people to spam their charities (real or otherwise) here or risk creating a huge double-standard.

Additionally, not every charity is entirely on the up-and-up -- even those endorsed or founded by celebrities. It is up to each donor to do their research and make sure the proceeds are going where they say they're going, or risk funneling money into a scam. You'd be surprised how many fake charities are set up, even in the name of athletes.

Charity or not it is a dumb idea to even think of something remotely close to what that other team does!! And if this even is a Willis idea, shame on him for even having that idea even become a reality for the Baltimore fan base. Just like the other poster said about a Pittsburgh game, " now there will be black and yellow towels swinging" ?!?!?! Yeah great way to think that one through whoever!! Sorry but charity or not, I wont sell out and start swinging a towel around!!!

It wasn't McGahee's idea. He sponsored the funds to make it happen. Some artist in Baltimore came up with it. It would be cool to see the stadium blacked out, but it is already another team's thing. So I am torn about it.

I hate the towel idea because of the Steelers, but if the whole stadium wore black and waved black towels it would look bad ***.

I am not sure about all the teams, but I would think the rule would be the same for all, but the Ravens do not allow Vuvuzela's at their games. They would pretty much ruin football.

Didnt see anything about this but please no towels. They definitely are terrible. Hate them everytime I see them. We are a great fan base that doesnt need a silly gimmick like a towel or dairy hat to prove our support of the Ravens.
