What's Up With Mase And The No Talking Policy?

20 posts in this topic

Heard that Mase was no longer going to be talking with the media this season. Any one know what that's about? Just wondering if something might of happened and maybe someone who knew could shed some light. Just seems weird that Mase would go to those extremes. Well if any one has any kind of insight about this subject, feel free to share it, I sure would like to know. Hope everything is ok with the team on the inside!

Mason wants to win a Superbowl as badly as anyone else on the team. I think he's really glad to have Boldin and Housh here now because it improves the teams chances of doing that. I also think he realizes that based on some of his past outbursts the media will be quick to jump on him for any tiny thing he says and make him out to be a mini T Owens. He doesn't want any part of it.

I agree, and I love to see when someone gets in the mindset of "its all business now", that usually ends well.

Only he knows why he's doing that, but ultimately it's not about him. He might be is a proven warrior, but he still needs to put the team first.

Don't know for sure but I think it may be because he has been reading our posts on here, and doesn't want to add fuel to the fire! lol.

I think there's three reasons behind it:

1) By saying he'll only make comments on his own radio show, he's trying to drum up interest and pull in more listeners. Based on his past history, he's always had something interesting to say when people are really paying attention.

2) He's sick of answering questions about the newly-acquired wide receivers, rather than questions about himself or the team in general. In a sense, I can't blame him since I'd feel unwanted and unappreciated, too, if I had to continually heap praise upon my co-workers and get no recognition myself.

3) He wants to stay focused on the season and what he needs to do to win a championship, rather than let the media misinterpret any emotional comments he'll make and distract his team. He's a fiery guy and he's a talker when he wants to be, make no mistake about it. But at the same time, he's recognizant of the impact his words can have, and he's doing all he can to keep the controversy to a minimum.

He is clearly upset that Joe doesn't want to throw him as many balls anymore. Mason has always liked Joe, and I mean really liked. Like liked. We must remember that Mason is the diva of the NFL. The attentioney, gossipey with reporters, flirtey with Joe character. Now I know you want to think, "But Hawkprey, maybe he's just fed up with the media." Well truth is, in addition to being a diva, Mason has severe memory loss. So while you may think he just doesn't want to answer the same boring questions over and over, he thinks he's hearing it for the first time. When dealing with Mason, it's important to remember that in Mason's dreams, there is no offense but him. No Anquan, no Ray Rice, not even a quarterback. And his only compensation is he gets one of them stupid "Superbowl" or whatever rings.

I got no problem with it , I just wish he would also agree to not talk to the referees, then we would be on to something positive here.

OK - So D-Mase is not talking to the media, I'm ok with that. Anyone know where/when his radio talk show is broadcasted? Guess that is the only way we will hear from him

The Derrick Mason Show airs every Tuesday evening 6pm-8pm on 1090AM WBAL Radio, with an online streaming simulcast at WBAL.com. Podcast downloads are also made available on the website after each show's initial airing, chopped up into segments.

He probably realizes he says too much stuff off the cuff, and he's a fairly easy guy to bait into saying something stupid. So I don't really see this being a bad thing. He can be a prima donna sometimes, but he's a tough guy who comes to play and is - usually - pretty reliable in the clutch.

Talking to the media is pretty pointless anyway. A persons media character and their business character are never anything alike. What I mean is that people just refrain from being themselves when answering the same questions over and over with loads of outside influences watching and listening. I can honestly say I don't see the point in speaking to the media anyway unless there is big news or there are injuries to announce or something like that. Ultimately, it's still football and the sport (any sport for that matter) must be treated with as much focus as possible.

The only reason this is news is because the media wants to create a wide receiver controversy. That's today's media for you, creating stories where there isn't one.

Good for Mason, I love to watch his interviews but if the man doesn't want to talk to the media, he doesn't have to. There's no reason to suspect he has some problem with the offense or the other wide receivers. The man just retired and came back for one reason: To win a Super Bowl. He's not thinking about his own ego or statistics, he just wants to win.

He's not totally blacking out the media. He was on the ED Norris show Thursday morning and spoke pretty candidly. He did say that if you have a question to call in on his show and he'll answer anything asked.

D. Mason is an incredibly gifted NFL wide reciever. However, when he talks he absolutely makes no sense to me. His silence has an added and unlimited value that I, for one, can appreciate. Sorry.

Between the retarded questions asked by reporters, statements made by the blog reporters, not to mention comments by some fans on here and in response to blogs, and news items, I can't blame him for not speaking. Considering some reporters obvious attempts to start controversy, I'm surprised any athlete talks to them.
I could care less if he talks to reporters, just let him play good, stay healthy and help win games and I'll be happy.
