Sunpaper: Ravens Ray's Team From Start

17 posts in this topic

Marvin Lewis said the Ravens were Ray Lewis' team from the start. Not that we didn't already know this, but I am thankful that the disrespectful comments from Rex Ryan (Ray tapped out on play calling) while airing the Hard Knocks HBO special didn't tarnish Rays legacy.

I have been quiet about this in hopes that someone else would come forward to state the obvious. That in all honestly, every former Ravens defensive coordinator who went on to become head coach of another NFL team should be licking Rays boots in gratitiude(Lewis, Del Rio, Ryan, Nolan, etc).

For Rex to suggest on national TV, that Ray tapped out from doing the D-Coordinators job is a disrespectful cheap-shot of the lowest order.
Ray Lewis has always been the single thread which has inspired this team to high performance not the D-Coordinators. Marvin Lewis has confirmed this today, once and for all.

Ray Lewis is, has been, and will always be the most important player to ever wear a Ravens uniform. Thanks Sunpaper for a fine peice of sports journalism.

I have nothing bad to say about Marvin, he's always been respectful to the Ravens (as far as I can remember at least). Sure, he may not be the best coach at times but he's a stand-up guy. Despite whatever Ryan has said and will say about Ray Lewis, Ray's legacy as one of the most dominating and feared defensive players in the history of the game will not be tarnished. It'll take more than one obnoxious loud-mouth to bring Ray down.

Rex should save his smack talk for mark Sanchez: he did horribly against our defense. I was greatly amused when Hiroti Ngata tackled him when Sanchez stalled on his pass. Ray Lewis 4ever!!!

There's a reason why NFL Films even has gone so far as to devote an entire episode of "NFL Films Presents..." to the six current NFL head coaches that owe their jobs to Ray Lewis.

For the record, that episode airs Saturday, 9/25 at noon ET (as discussed here)

There should never have been a question that Ray Lewis is the leader of this football team, on a team filled with leaders. He is the general on the field and where he goes, the Ravens go.

Ray Lewis did Rex Ryan's job from 2005-2008..

He did it again, last Monday. He actually won a game. Talked the talk, then walked the walk.

What episode did Rex say that about Lewis? The finale? I've seen the rest of them and don't recall anything like that.

Second to last episode i believe. Rex was trying to tell Sanchez to call the offense during a pre-season game and Rex mention Ray and Reed.

It was the last episode (Or episode 5). Just watched it. He talks about how Ray and Ed couldn't handle calling the defense

Ray and Ree do call the defensive plays though.....

I knew the only issue they had was neither wanted the headsets in their helmets.

Give me a break, Rex is awesome, always has been always will be. Hes a Raven product. Some people just take things to personal as a fan. Its like people who take it personal from ochocinco shenanigans. Everyone knows Rex is a talker, and hes pretty good at it too... obviously. For those unaware its a common thing used to hype games. Rex knows exactly what he said when he said Ray tapped out. Just like Revis says Moss gives up when he plays against him lol. Its just the nature of the game, since before it became business. Like Ray said, its like playing backyard football.

He hypes his games, it gets fans involved. Their stadium is louder than its ever been since hes been there. Guy knows what hes doing.

It's funny, because you could hear Ray calling plays and calling out who to cover/block or expect to get the ball, on Monday night. I recall hearing one play where Ray was shouting, "LaDainian, LaDainian" or Tomlinson, I forget if it was his first or last, but he called it, and L.T. got the ball and was stuffed.
Ray does that every game. He's was doing it in last seasons Pro Bowl even.
It's great to see him adjust with Manning as well, you see Manning adjust, and than Ray adjusts.
We all know Ray is out for a Championship this year, more so than in the past, he might not admit that, but we can already see it's true.

that's funny...because if you watched Ray Lewis in the pro-bowl last year he was calling the plays and telling/putting guys in position to make the tackle...he was telling the AFC team where the ball was going.

Ray lewis can read and react. he was the peyton manning of defense in the pro bowl game. Trust me....Ray Lewis has a career as a defensive coordinator.

1)The Ravens D was great before Rex

2)The Ravens D was great after Rex.

3)therefore it had little to do with Rex.

Look, he seems like a good guy who tries to tell it like it is but calling him a defensive mastermind based on what he was handed in Baltimore is going overboard.

I think his time in NY will define whether he truly is a great defensive coach

Your point is well understood and I agree with you. However, Rex crossed the line of good taste when he said what he said. Rex basically was quoted in an acusatory statement which suggested Ray abrogated leadership responsibility. That was way not cool because Rex knows at this point of Rays career, his legacy is what he is playing for, because it is his next revenue producer. And Rays legacy is all about leadership. Ray was offended by the comment and rightly so. That was wrong.

Rex never played a down of NFL Football and his resume highlights are limited to the seed of some guy named Buddy plus Rays Lewis' sweat, Period.

Perhaps Rex Ryan is aiming to win big games off the field - seeing as the Jets aren't going to deliver the goods on the field. Today will be the first time I cheer for the Patriots ever!
