Happy With Ozzy's Decisions Regarding Corners Backs

30 posts in this topic

I was thinking about the draft, and our off season and how everyone was dying to pick up a "lock down" corner. 2 names that came up were Kyle Wilson, and Antonio Cromartie; everyone was saying "we neeeeedddd to pick up one of those guys or we're not gonna win the superbowl blah blah blah" and in hindsight of the Jets game I find it humorous that the lack of good play by those 2 players that we "needed to have" to win a superbowl ultimately gave us the edge and allowed us to win the game. Sure Kyle wilson was good in college, but the NFL is far from being college. Perhaps in a couple years he will be a great corner, but we needed to suit up for this season and he simply isn't a #1 corner that we needed. Cromartie on the other hand looked like Frank Walker with a better 40 time, and that extra speed only allowed him to hold Boldin longer giving the ref enough of a chance to see the penalty and call it. Sure we lack that true #1 corner but when you think about it theres no such thing as a shut down corner, WR's catch the ball vs revis, and nnamdi too. Our defence as a unit will win us games, not our corners.

I agree with you, grape, the defensive unit as a whole is what wins the games. As I have read a number of years ago, no NFL team has ever won a Super Bowl with an average defense, or especially a sub-par defense.

Considering the Ravens defense through the years, I would have to think that the Ravens do a very good job at defense, most certainly when you consider what the front office and especially the scouts are doing in this regard.

Harris isn't a good safety or CB.

Mike Mayock brought up the fact that he didn't know why the Ravens front office didn't go cornerback considering the front 7 was stacked prior to the draft. I have this feeling that Rex is going to get another corner in the draft next year and just so he can run somewhat of a dime setup.

I supported Ozzie's decision all along to drop out of round 1 and get 2 picks for the price of one, especially for the talent he picked up with those 2 picks. People will bash the Kindle pick after the fact but as an owner that's a risk you take with any player. Kyle Wilson may develop into a good corner eventually but very few college corner step right into the nfl and shine. There is just too much of a difference between the college and pro game. Ozzie wanted someone who has played at the nfl level before in our secondary and he got that in Josh Wilson. Cromartie has been overrated since he played in SD. I never thought of him as better than a number 2. I had a feeling our WRs would eat him up and they did.

What the heck does that have to do with the Ravens?

know one is talking about how much noise B Edwards really made as the go to Wide receiver of the supposedly best team in the NFL. Whoever our Corner was guarding him was doing a good job. If it was J Wilson then 2 kudos Ozzie because we kept them in check...

It wasn't Wilson; Fabian covered him most of the night. And while Edwards isn't a great WR, he didn't have too many opportunities to make plays considering Sanchez's hesitancy go down-field.

Josh Wilson didn't play much in the Jets game. Fabian and Carr were the starting corners and did a good job even though they weren't challenged much which I think the raven's coaching staff expected. We will get a stiffer teswt this week with Cincy. I expect Josh Wilson to see more playing time and maybe even see Webb playing.

I'm just glad our CB are getting healthy and Fabian look good! It's amazing how they recover so quickly. They work so hard to get back and they deserve it! (Fabe & Webb)

Getting kindle and cody in the draft was great i love em as they both were first round talent coming into the draft but i got to admit that kyle wilson was a great pickup for the jets, he gave up a big PI that lead to our TD but he had great coverage overall and considering that we have boldin, mason and houshmanzadeh he did a great job covering. I really was impressed with him throughout the game and think he will be a great CB in the future
Back to the topic ozzie knows what hes doing and he has allways done a great job drafting and getting players via free agency for us, best GM in the NFL. Period.

Never doubt Ozzie, cause hes Ozzsome!!!

I have no doubt that Kyle Wilson has the potential and physical tools to become a star corner, however its not going to happen this season and we needed someone whos been in the league and can hold it down. I think we accomplished that barring anymore injuries

I know we all want to win the super bowl this year but at some point you gotta bring in some youth and potential into the secondary. Besides saying that we havent made that much changes at the corner position we added josh wilson who isnt playing maybe because he doesnt have knowledge of the playbook just yet and we have nak in as a nickelback
dont get me wrong i really like the moves we made but we gotta get some youth in too

Just as a side note: I think the key to the secondary performance will be the pass rush. The new members of the D-Line appear to be much, much, much better pass rushers than the old ones(Bannon, Pryce and McKinney). This has freed up Suggs and even Ngata to get better angles to the QB. This formula clicked against the Jets.

Now, the Bengals game is going to be the real test. If we can get a decent pass rush, this team is going to be hard to beat.

may be the ravens can make a good CB or S, i only said practice squad not starting line up, remember, he was a RB in HS, CB in college, DB in pros.

Although i wasnt on the 'draft a corner' bandwagon, i was irked that we took two tight ends in a row, and didnt trade up a couple slots to grab dunlap. But i've grown to really like grabbing both dickson and pitta, in hindsight that was good...although i still wish we got dunlap, even if it meant not getting cody.

I have to laugh at all the noise abt our DBs; the "experts" have had nothing good to say abt our DBs since the end of last year, yet our pass D ranked 8th! They said we needed to draft every big name in college, but we didn't - we got depth at TE, DT, WR and LB. Then we pickedup several goodCBs via FA and trades prior to the start of the season. Now our DB depth is better but we still get no respect. In one to two games we'll have Webb back from injury, Williams from suspension, Wilson up to speed, not to mention Carr and Wash at CB and oh, yeah, Zibby and 'Ruki kicking butt at Safety. As long as we keep everything in front of us, no problem; Cincy has similar probs w/ our WR and TEs.

Not knocking your statement, I'm just curious as to how much younger do you expect us to get? Considering the average age of a rookie entering the NFL is 22 and they usually require 2 - 3 yrs experience before they see playing time.

Reed - 32
Hamlin - 29
Carr - 27
Washington - 27
Nakamura - 24
Williams - 25
Webb - 24
Wilson - 25
Zibby - 25
Miller - 22
Landry - 27

That's an average age of 26!

Yeah its an average of 26, but im not sure how webb an washington will bounce back after tearing their ACL and i was never high on carr either. Wilson may be a good pickup but i want to see him play before i make a statement on him. Prince Miller obviously was brought back to return punts and wont see a lot of time on the field its the same with williams wont see a lot of time on the field

I don't think he's gonna sign with us just to be a practice squadder. Another thing, who are you going to release in his place?

Having a solid group of corners is better than having one shutdown corner, this has turned out positive so far.

in all fairness QB's facing Oakland have like 10 minutes to throw the ball.

I completely disagree with your post. It sounds more like a Jet-bashing post than an actual belief in the Ravens players.

And I don't think either Cromartie OR Wilson had a bad game. It was their offense that was horrible. Cromartie had a couple penalties. Okay, they really didn't cost the Jets anything. And that penalty on Wilson that put the ball on the goal line... I really didn't agree with. I think the Ravens were lucky to get a flag thrown there. Wilson was pretty much just feeling for Housh while looking for the ball, and the ball was overthrown anyway.

And on top of all that, it was Wilson's FIRST game in the NFL. The Ravens have a lot of weapons on offense now, so I think taking that into consideration, the Jets defense played very well.

You say Wilson isn't starting calibur right now? How do make that assumption? He just DID start.

NOW, I did not agree with what Ozzie was doing(or not doing) back in June/July. But that was when ALL reports were that Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb would probably miss the first 6 weeks of the season. Those reports ended up being completely wrong, because BOTH of them were pretty much ready to go Week 1, and even got a few weeks of practice in on top of it! Because those guys can play, the secondary is back to being above average. And the addition of Josh Wilson I think will really pay dividends this season.

So while I feel the Ravens secondary is going to be a LOT better than the national media thinks, I can't let you get away with saying it was a smart move to pass on Wilson and that he's not good. Look at the Ravens first TWO picks from this year: Sergio Kindle might never play football again, and Terrence Cody had to have surgery on his knee before playing a game.
