Roster Changes In Coming Weeks

21 posts in this topic

So we are about to see a few roster changes in the next 2-4 weeks. First off, we have 2 OL in gaither and cousins who are nursing injuries. and although these 2 wont have any implications as far as roster changes, they should be noted. Cousins is ready to go next week as per Jason La Canfora, and gaither is about 2-3 weeks out. In addition to that, Cody will be ready possibly this week, definitely by game 3. We also have Webb who "could" have played last week, but I think we can all expect him back this week or next.

Ok so now roster implications for other players.

Cary Williams, he stepped up in the preseason and showed he deserves a roster spot. After game 2, hes back on he squad to add depth to the secondary.

Reed, on the pup as of now, spoke to Jason La Canfora and stated he'll be ready the second hes off the pup (week 7)

Sergio Kindle, not even signed yet, but we can expect atleast a time frame for return in the next week or so. If hes able to come back and join the team somewhat soon, Harbaugh said he will be signed, and placed on he pup, I assume after week 6, he'd be on the active roster or put on injured reserve.

Stallworth, also on pup, looking at week 8 return at latest, but he believes more like week 6.

So with these last 4 players, when they come back, who leaves? I assume when reed comes back, bye bye Ken Hamlin. as far as everyone else, im not sure. Kindle comes back, he replaces Edgar Jones? Stallworth comes back do we cut Marcus Smith even tho hes a huge ST contributor? And when cary williams comes back, who leaves? we already cut mccann and prince is back. I doubt we cut prince again and only have him for a week just for returns. So at that point, do we look at cutting a DL? Whats everyones thoughts, cause regardless, there will be some roster moves soon.

And when all is said and done, our roster will be DEEP... and highly talented accross the board. And ontop of that, some quality players will be let go, hopefully we'll be able to slide acouple to PS (if we cut a prince miller, or Jason Phillips or Art Jones).

I'm excited because... our roster isnt even at full strength... but will be soon enough. We should get considerably better just about every week with additions.

Whats everyone think?

Nice summary. One correction though, Stallworth isnt on PUP. He couldnt be placed on the pup list because he practiced in training camp. As far as Reed and Williams go, Prince miller is most likely the first to go after week two. Also when kindle is signed we'll probably let go of Prescott Burgess first since it seems the coaches really like Edgar Jones' versatility.

your right about Stallworth, sorry for the mistake, and good point about Burgess, forgot about him. I'm not sure if we let prince go actually... until maybe when reed comes back. the more i think about it, with CB's coming back in (williams, webb), Ruki wont have to play in nickel packages at CB like he did in the jets game. So i could see a scenerio of us letting Hamlin go afer week 2 (ruki) moving back to safety. Only because Harbaugh may have brought Prince back for strickly return abilities for now. Not sure this will happen since that will leave us with 3 safeties for now. Just saying its a possibility. Your right tho, Burgess would go before Jones. Good call

You know, I forgot about hamlin too. So I guess it will be kindle>Burgess, Williams>Miller, Ed Reed>Hamlin.

I think i'd have to lean more toward that also. Either way, we are about to get stronger in the next couple weeks, and im pumped!!

Knowing Ozzie, we wont be "cutting" anybody. I would expect another surprise trade like we saw Barnes go to the eagles. We have a lot of depth at a lot of positions and i think we are past the point of releasing "temp" players. Everybody we got is talented and worthy of at least a late round draft pick next year. Although, some more action on the PS is most likely going to take place as well

Not to be a downer or anything but you have to realize that other guys will get injured at some point. We'll never field the entire team together all at once because even once the guys you mentioned are back then someone else will be hurt. We're one week into the season and look at all the major injuries around the league.

Gaither will be the biggest difference maker IMO.

NFL rules mandate that we keep Miller on our ACTIVE roster for three weeks. I think its anytime you sign someone that just came off someone else's practice squad.

I believe that Williams already counts against the 53. If you check the roster on this site, it lists him as active. I don't think anyone will have to be cut when he returns week 3.

I agree about Gaither, that just really opens up so many more options for us. And yeah we never will have everyone out there. We just have to hope that we'll limit the lengths of these injuries.

I'm almost certain a player is exempt from the 53 man limit while they are suspended. Once his suspension ends the exemption ends with it.

Williams doesn't.

I'm not sure about Gaither. Last I heard is that they are trying to get him heavier, after dropping weight, assuming he did so because he thought he could stay at LT.
Who knows if he'll come back ready to play and in football shape.
It's odd, there were a lot of stories flying around about him during the OTA's and TC, but lately there hasn't been much. Can he really come back in football shape after missing training camp? Will he remain healthy?
It's a tough call with Gaither, I don't expect him to just show up ready to play.
Really, I'd like to know what's going on with him.

I think when Williams returns from suspension, he ends up being the odd man out and returns to the practice squad. I don't see them releasing a player from another position like DB or DL just because he played fair to good in the PS.
As well, they can't release Miller as per Mike Duffy's quote: "For now, NFL rules dictate that Miller must remain on the active roster for three weeks because he came off another team’s practice squad."

Ayanbadejo and Lawrence are on the PUP list as well, however it seems unlikely we will keep Lawrence at this point and the team probably IRs him/ reaches an injury settlement with him in week 6. Brendan may be a little different, he still has 2 years left on his contract if I'm not mistakened. If he does get back on the active roster, I imagine Jason Phillips will be cut. Still a ways off on those two and Ed though so we will see.

I see them keeping Williams for that reason. I have a feeling Jason Phillips is going to be one of our odd men out even though he did pretty well in preseason. I want to keep Prince Miller, but if we can find someone else to return punts, he'll be gone after week 6.

I think Lawrence will be let go also. And as far as BA, not sure what we're gonna do with him. I can see Phillips being let go also possibly to PS, unless there is an injury as LB somewhere.
