Can We Make It Without Ed Reed?

17 posts in this topic

I know its just one game, but I really felt comfortable with the secondary play last night. I felt this way last year too when Ed Reed went down.

I know Ed is a possible Hall of Famer, and I have no hard stats to prove it, but can we make it if Ed is out longer than expected?

The secondary hasn't had a real test yet. Who do the Jets have? A one hit wonder in Edwards? A decent WR in Cotchery. Dustin Keller was probably the biggest threat and our linebackers took care of him (speaking of which, our young trio played really well).

My point is, even if I am understating the Jets WR core, our secondary hasn't faced the likes of the Colts, the Patriots or any other elite passing team. I'm watching the Cinci game right now, and I can say if the secondary keeps Chad, TO, Shipley and Gresham down in yardage, then we can make the assessment that the secondary can hold the fort without Reed.

It's far too early to tell in my opinion. Even after the Cincy game, I won't be convinced one way or another. Zibby is a solid safety who plays within the system but he can't make the plays we've seen Reed make through the years. Conversely, he won't gamble and leave CBs out to dry as we've seen Ed do at times too.

I want to see Zibby challenged over the course of a number of games before judging if the team can advance deep into the post-season without Ed. He had his moments filling in for Ed last year but also struggled against GB(as did the entire secondary).

We'll just have to wait and see.

To be totally fair, didn't absolutely everyone struggle against Aaron Rodgers last year?

Pretty much. I just pointed it out.

I actually meant more like the entire NFL, rather than just our secondary. Not excusing them for a poor performance, I mean, I'm just saying that Rodgers is sort of amazing.

We are going to have one fierce defence with Ed back! I do think we can make it without him, but not a situation I want to consider.

I know the Jets passing game is below par, but they still have a fine offensive line and some decent receiving options. I can only imagine the fear of Sanchez facing this defence again with Reed and Webb suited up too!

Are you making a statement or asking a question? If its a question, my answer is yes

I said it last year and got hammered...even though the coaches agreed...but Ed plays with a certain style that can harm a defense "sometimes" depending on the rest of the teams defenders

When this teams CBs were getting burnt last year..I felt like we needed more of a stay home, typical safety that could babysit..not the reckless high risk high reward Ed that we all love so much.

When the.defense is clicking on all cylinders and actually has the CBs to do what they want...then I'm all for ED being ED. If our Corners start to struggle like they did last year then once again I'm gonna want Ed to stay home more which in essence takes away from what makes him so great.

With that said there are a lot of teams that I feel like not having ed out there will actually help us...the Bengals are 1. Carson palmer has owned us somewhat and even though Ed picked him off in the first game last year I believe...Carson does a great job of looking Ed reed off and moving him with pump fakes...sometimes under complicating things is better...let's keep these safties behind the corners on Sunday and ill bet Carson struggles alittle more then normally

However of the team defense continues to llok like it did Monday night...that's when Ed is at his best..

But its still to early to tell..we haven't had a team test these corners yet..that will determine if we can win with or without Ed
