Discipline

10 posts in this topic

Seems like last year we couldn't go a single game without game losing penalties. Penalties that would move the chains for the other team or wipe away a critical interception. I felt good to be on the other side for a change. A Disciplined Ravens defense can stop anyone. I hope for it to continue. Lets go get those Bengals, we got a score to settle wit Carson Palmer!

The Ravens used to be their own worst enemy. The majority of the losses they had the past two seasons were because of penalties. Heck, that trail of penalties even extends further beyond that. The Ravens have always been a talented team that's beaten themselves many times over, but last night was hopefully the start of a new trend in Baltimore.

It was a very welcome change to see the flags going to the other team.

Cutting down on penalties was a priority for the Ravens, they worked hard at it in the offseason, and it paid-off in a big way. Kudos to the Ravens coaching staff for instilling, and the Ravens' players for displaying, discipline. Beating the Jets in a one-point blowout on MNF is a great way to start the 2010 season.

How about Bart Scott throwing the ball at Rice before the game? I think he even threw the ball into the stands after we stomped em on 4th down. Some people never change.

It was very impressive considering that we had the ref crew that threw the most penalties last year.

But it is worth noting that Sanchez really didn't challenge our secondary at all to the point of having us getting PI calls. We on the other hand were really challenging them deep when they brought blitzes.

I think if the cards were flipped, we probably would've picked up a few PI calls with this ref crew.

Maybe, Chris Carr played some good defense on Edwards.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I remember some of the flags in years before were from Carr himself, who played with poor technique (like looking back for the ball while defending the pass) before yet came out last night playing very well. On one of the few passes Sanchez threw to Braylon, I saw Carr get his hand in front of the receiver in-stride and immediately look back for the ball which was mid-air and on its way. Great technique. Incomplete pass.

Last night wasn't about star power (although Ray, Ngata, Suggs, and Q were all rippin it up) so much as it was about playing as a team and with sound fundamentals to beat another very good team. We stifled their ground game on defense which effectively crippled their passing attack as well, even when our offense struggled. Yet our offense also found ways to put points on the board and run time off the clock, keeping our D fresh and the Jets D on the field.

It was a monster game from start to finish, and the team that played with better technique and discipline is the team that won. That's what happens when great teams play each other, and unfortunately was, in the past, one of the reasons our Ravens lost some of those big games. Emotion is games is fine, but to forget about the fundamentals and good technique is going to give the other team the edge 9/10 times.

GREAT game last night. Not perfect, but we have a damn good starting point to build from. Still digging the sword & shovel analogy Harbaugh posed last year. I think it really captures what this team is about. Though I still have love and respect for Rex Ryan and what he did for this team, I am inclined to think that Biscotti made the right business decision when he went with Harbaugh over him. It's cool they still got respect for each other though, especially after all the pre-game smack talk.

Ahhh... I'm rambling. Last night was fun to watch (though probably not so much for people who don't like defensive battles) and it makes me absolutely STOKED to see what's in store for this season!

I agree, keeping the penalties in check is going to be huge for us to make a successful run. I hope the coaches keep placing emphasis on it throughout the season.

I'll take 5/38 any day for the ravens. The Jets looked more like the ravens on monday. I think our secondary may have gotten 1 penalty overall. I agree that we can't put to much stock since sanchez didn't test them much but the few times he did try to press down the field there was good coverage.

It sure was relieving to see better discipline from the team - especially in a tight game, where late penalties could have easily cost us the game.

Instead, we focused and made the plays required to lock in the victory. Long may it continue! :D
