Grading Flacco's Performance

239 posts in this topic

Looking at his performance i would have to give him an A-,,,besides the interception he played exceptionally well, the interception put a minus on my chart.

Man, every doubt I might have ever had about Joe was firmly erased when that last pass sailed neatly into TJ's hands. 'A' in my book, Joe.

Anyone know when we'll face another 4-3 team???

So far Flacco has looked good against 3-4 (primarily) fronts but I can't help worrying if the 4-3 front is harder for him to dissect... Or maybe it's the o-line who had the problems at CIN, well, gotta go watch the games again, I guess ;)

EDIT: PS... Man I'm pumped... That was a great game, and Flacco was so cool, after not doing much (good) for the 2nd half, he was there when needed...

I'll go straight B on this one. The pick and the throws from the 2 yard line keep it from A territory.

*Edit - OK, maybe I'm being a bit hard on him. It was AT PITT for pete's sake, I'll go B+.

I have to give Joe an A-. He's always struggled against the Steelers @ Pittsburgh. He proved that he's still progressing with a big time comeback.

Housh changed his route, Joe still made the play. Pure example of WR and QB make the play.

He would've gotten a straight A if it wasn't for the INT. Costly INT against a team struggling to move the ball against us.

So for me that's back to back A performances.

I also have to mention that I liked the fire I saw in Joe this game. The Joe Cool attitude after an INT or a fumble is a good thing, don't get me wrong, but sometimes it seemed like he lacked emotion after we would score as well. I liked his passion during and after this game.

I agree with the A-. It would have been an A if not for that bad INT in our territory. Also, Housh didn't "change" the route, it was an "out and up" all the way with a great pump-fake by Joe.

I heard on 105.7 this morning that the call by Cam was different. That Housh reacted to what the D was giving him and Joe saw him open and made the throw, despite the route not being the original one called.

I think it was suppose to be a post route to the corner of the endzone. But when the CB bit and allowed him to go to the inside he took it.

I'll give Joe an A for the Steelers game. 256 yards passing against the steel curtain is a strong day. He had an int but the game winning throw more than makes up for it.

I'd give him an A.

I would have have given him an A+, but he had that one boneheaded INT. But he more than redeemed himself at the end.

I sure as hell hope that Housh didn't change that play on the fly...what if Flacco let's that ball go when he makes his break...that would've been disastrous...especially for a qb and Wr that haven't had time to work with each other...

That had to be a designed play imo

I agree 100%...no way that was a split time decision by Housh.

If you don't believe me watch Housh's presser on BR.com the one that says "Houshmandzadeh on Game Winning Catch"

But I will transcribe what he said:
It was an out and up.....I didn't really run out and up, you know I, when I'm running looking at it, I'm seeing him bite on the move so I just turn it up, I'm suppose to go up the sideline, but I felt him going along the side of me, so I kinda turned and crossed his face. Simple.
That's crazy.....if Flacco throws the sideline pattern its a possible INT. Housh must have at least said to Flacco "don't play the first move, play my double move pattern" or something along those lines.

I have to give him a solid B+. Great game for Joe. I think he still needs to develop the awareness a bit, but that will come over time. For instance, not changing the Willis run play that went to the right when Polomaulo (sp) is lined up on the edge. If he lines up there, you got a pretty good chance that he's bringing it. Also, it killed me to see Batch throw deep when we jumped offsides, knowing that Joe has yet to really recognize that. The good thing is that these are things you develop with time. We are very fortunate to have Joe, he played awesome yesterday.

It was, he was talking about it after the game. Pretty good decision, glad to see our offense adjusting on the fly like that.

The only thing Housh changed was that he ran inside of the defender instead of down the sideline, but the actual play stayed pretty much the same. Regardless, he scored, we won, and Steelers fans went home sad/angry.

Yep sometimes that happens. A WR takes a given play, the QB reacts. Both players make a play. WR sees the opportunity, Joe Reads that opportunity. Game Over.

Just listened to it....great adjustment! Bait the CB to the sideline a few plays earlier and then cross him during this play. Love it!!

Yea but your probably right that he told Joe, that he might adjust. Since they just ran that play, Housh saw that opportunity before.

But it wasnt that big of a change...bottom line is Flacco knew there was a second move coming by Housh that was going to see him going towards the endzone...the only difference is Housh was suppose to go right and cut up the sideline and instead he faked right and crossed left and the play went towards the inside.

Let's not act like this was some great non-communicated play between these 2.

Anyway..it doesn't matter...cause we beat the Steelers

Forgot that anything that insinuates great should not be mentioned w/ Joe.

But it is a subtle difference. If Housh goes to the sideline, Flacco would've done his patented float pass to the back corner of the endzone (that would've been covered). Whereas here, Joe just hit the open receiver point blank. If he threw it before the break, he would have done his floater probably.

True, that being said he had just tried it a drive or so before to Boldin back to back times and it was unsuccessful. Let's not forget we were playing a good defense and these guys watch tapes just like our guys and I am sure they were looking for that floater in the endzone that's why the corners were all over it. THIS TIME watching the tape bit them in the kisser. Steelers CB after the game winning touchdown: :34853_brickwall:

The defender bit on the move because they knew we were trying to get the ball near the sidelines. He tried to undercut Housh and Housh recognized it and made a great play.

hahaha guys! Changing routes on the fly happens alllll the time in the NFL, its part of being in the NFL. Even in Madden there are read plays where the WR will be a hook, fly or post depending on how the corner covers them. It comes down to the WR and the QB making the exact same read, and it looks like on that particular play it worked out.

Thanks for letting us know it happens all the time, as well as for the ridiculous madden analogy.

well some people we're like omg did he not tell flacco he was going to go inside rather than outside?!?!???!?!??! but its nothing to worry about its just a read. As well I only pointed out the "ridiculous" madden analogy to emphasize how common route reads are, as Madden only scratches the surface of an NFL playbook and even they accounted for route reads.
