Calvin Johnson's 'catch' Vs Bears

36 posts in this topic

It's stupid. If you catch the ball and stick the tip of it over the white chalk before having it knocked away by a defender, it's a touchdown. If you catch a ball and put it on the ground so you can get up with both hands, it's incomplete.

By the way, where were these refs when we played NE last year and the guy who scooped up the punt that hit Zibby "caught" the ball only to get up with the ball 10 feet away from him?

If that is not a TD than neither is Santonio Holmes catch in SB 43, Holmes catch against Baltimore in 2008, [quote name='JO_75' timestamp='1284341626' post='473154']

ummmmm.....i agree that calvin johnsons catch was a touchdown but your examples here are wrong

the rules being used in your examples are not the rule that screwed calvin

the example your looking for is the two point conversion in the saints superbowl

calvin had to stand up with the ball.......the holmes catch against baltimore was a crossing the plain issue

Yeah, there was no question that Johnson had crossed the plane, the question revolves more around whether he had possession; according to the rule, he didn't, but according to conventional wisdom and the opinions of the majority watching in slow-motion, he did. That two-point conversation in the Super Bowl is a great example, as you pointed out.

My problem with it was: he's got possesion of the ball and 2 feet in bounds. I thought, since he's in the endzone, as soon as he has possesion of the ball while in bounds it's a Touchdown and the play is dead.

Bill Polian needs to keep his nose out of this. It has nothing to do with him. If it happened to the Colts, however, it would have something to do with him and I'd bet he'd do nothing but b**** and moan about how unfair it is. Infact, I want it to happen to the Colts, result in them losing a game and see what Polian's reaction is.

The rulebook's been altered to try and get rid of gray area when, in this case, the referee needs some leeway to make a sensible decision.

the rule states that when going to the ground a reciever only has possesion once he stands up with the ball

now we all saw that calvin didnt accidentily drop the ball but say he did then the spirit of the rule would be fair

a reciever could pretend he intended to drop it to mask the fact that he didnt complete the pass

so in this instance we saw the rule hurt the fairness of the game but i believe that once everybody knows what they are now required to do it will help games to be called more accurately

Now I know everyone is getting ready for the Steelers game and I was going to start a new thread but I saw this cartoon about the Non-Touchdown call and thought it was pretty funny and plus no point in starting a new thread about something when there is thread already about the same topic.

Note: This is the same site that had the Cartoon last year with Brady, actually this is a pretty good site as they have some great cartoons.
