9/11 - Patriot Day

27 posts in this topic

It's tough. I have to say I feel it's a bit of a contentious issue to be posted on this board.
Without a doubt, we should respect those families and the fallen of this tragedy, but it also brings deep political and religious issues into play, not to mention hate speech.
Even in an off topic forum, I'm not sure this is appropriate.
While I agree with you on the sentiment, I just don't think this is the right place.

We shall see how this goes, its ok to remember but please keep the politics and religion out of it--I know its a very fine line in light of current events-- if the thread goes there it will be shut down.

I saw them interviewing college freshmen on the news as to what they remember and most of them remember going home from school early lol One of my sons is a college freshman and I'm glad to say he remembers a bit more he was in third grade at the time.

It's interesting you mention college students because one of my many strange memories of that day was going to the University Mini Mart in Charles Village, Bmore City, to pick up some supplies after being woken up early by my girlfriend at the time, who I lived with, and while she was at work she was saying we are all going to die, turn on the news, etc. While at the Mini Mart, the (JH) college kids were complaining because the ATM was locked because of the events. That struck me as strange.
I still don't know why, during such events, that money would be frozen. Although I had heard something about it on the news, I can't recall why.
My current girlfriend worked in Fells Point at the time, and because of the location, it was on lockdown, and she wasn't allowed to leave her work. For me, it was a crazy day to have off work, because I had to watch it all on TV and felt like I couldn't go anywhere. That day I had talked to friends that lived just a couple blocks away from the Twin Towers and they gave me a horrible description of what was going on, and what they saw, and I won't get any more graphic than that. It seems more than just a day, it feels like at least a week, during that time I was constantly speaking with my brother, who served in the military, which I can't elaborate on, but I was asking him a lot of questions, frequently.
We got through it, we all have stories about it. Some we can't share.
We're stronger because of it.

No intention of causing any board upheaval, but I get why there's concern. Before the day gets going, just go ahead and remove if you'd like.

I was working in a high-rise in downtown Baltimore, near the Federal building, on that day. When we heard that a jet was headed this way, we finally evacuated. It was terrifying.

I was a junior in High School when everything happened. I really just remember feeling Angry when I was finally able to get home from school and able to watch the news.

PLEASE DO NOT SHUT THIS THREAD DOWN. I understand if there are some posts that are too political they should be deleted but we are talking about the most despicable, cowardly, horrific events to happen in the United States.

Plus it's not political, it is forever a part of world history.

So sorry to hear that BloodRaven, and we will do out best to keep this open. Looking out my window I see some choppers going to Camp Frettard and remember the no airplanes for a couple days and how strange that was and the couple time fighters have gone with burners engaged over the house.

My daughter was only a few months old at the time. Last night I tried to describe to her what that day was really like. It breaks my heart that she and pretty much every one else too young to remember will never understand the gravity of that day.

I am sure my Dad will say the same for Pearl Harbor

I can recall walking into the downtown area here in Clinton that day, and someone over in a house yelled out to me that the WTC had been hit. He invited me into his home to see for myself on television. For the rest of the day, as i made my rounds - community center, bank, local drug store - I couldn't get past this event, and I recall there were televisions everywhere I went tuned in to this tragic event.

I even made a mess of myself and had to borrow money from a friend for a cab ride home. That night, when I went to sleep, I never turned the lights out in my apartment.

Such a tragic event, and it was a turning point for us all. It was a day I shall never forget.

Im 28, so to remember where I was and what I was doing on this tragic day is comparable to my parents remembering where they were when they first of the JFK assassination. It will never be forgotten, just as they will always remember that time.

I remember being in 7th Grade Science and wondering why all of the teachers were conferring outside in the hallway.

We had just changed classes and had only been there for 10 minutes before being told to report back to homeroom with no explanation given. When we got back to homeroom, my homeroom teacher said nothing except that we can't turn on the computers or TVs and that we'll get information when it's the right time. After about 30 minutes of speculation, we were told that something serious had happened in New York City and that we were being sent home in a few minutes as soon as the last busses pulled in.

On the bus, we found out hazy details from our bus driver, who told us that a terrorist attack had happened but they weren't sure if it was in D.C. or in NYC. I remember being in a haze on the bus, where we didn't have the radio on for the ride home for the first time ever. I started spacing out and all these possibilities ran through my head as to what happened. Of course, when the words "terrorist attack" hit me, all of these scenarios played out like a Hollywood movie. My bus stop was only from the corner at the end of my street, but this walk home was one of the longest I'd ever had because I was scared and I imagined the worst possible scenario.

When I got home, I was relieved that everyone we knew was OK, but I still didn't know what had actually happened until I saw the footage on TV. I got nervous every time I heard a plane fly over my house or police sirens speeding off in the distance. I just remember feeling really empty because I knew that a lot of people died and I didn't know why.

That was the first time I think I really felt compassion for strangers, and though it didn't affect me as heavily as some of my classmates and teachers, I knew that the world would never be the same again. I think I was in a haze for a couple of days thereafter, because there was just a lot that I didn't understand and couldn't comprehend at my age.

Of all the days for us to put aside our differences and be united as HUMANS, today is the day. Forget party lines, forget political agends, forget religious differences, forget whatever national issue you've chosen to debate; all of that is selfish and inappropriate on a day like this. All that matters is remembering nearly a decade ago when innocent lives were stolen and a nation of individuals became united in their fear and confusion. Remember the time when "everyone else" became "us," and we shared the same anger and sadness and emotions coursing through our collective pulse.

Our children may not understand the significance of this date, but as long as we take the pain of that tragedy and use it as a reminder of a day when Americans were truly human, we can teach our children the value of cherishing our loved ones before we never get another chance to love them again.

I was on duty at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, on 09/11/2001. A "breaking news" e-mail hit my inbox stating a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I got to a TV in time to see the 2nd plane hit. We had the TV on all day in our workcenter. I watched both WTC towers collapse. I also watched the Boeing E-4B Advanced Airborne Command Post took off and Air Force 1 with President Bush land at Offutt AFB. 9/11/2001 was one of the most emotional days in my life next to deploying to the Persian Gulf War.
