Who Had 2009's (Real) Best Pass Defense?

Yes, but I'm a teacher and I will always applaud the use of math in REAL LIFE.

(mostly because my students say, "people don't have to use math in their real life")

which also raises the question: Real life as opposed to what?

Dont hate because we had the single season best defense ever :o!:P

Arguably. Don't forget about the '85 Bears.

Warden, it's great to have you around here posting by the way. You're my favorite Steeler's fan :lol:

Yea, I've always wondered if the Warden posted on Bengals and Browns sites too, or just ours.

Have to keep this thread on topic i suppose (don't want to be a hijacker)

I think that points allowed is more important than pass defense too, but usually our run defense is solid. I don't think with the addition of Cody and Redding that it should get any worse. (sarcasm for those non intuitive folks)

I agree. At least Warden speaks with logic and reason, and a lot of it.

Steelers, Ravens and Seahawks.

I belong to Bengals, Giants and Cardinals forums but rarely post there at all. Never found a good Browns forum.

Well, my statement of you is in comparison to the rest of the Steelers fan base. It's all relative :P.

NICE!
:229031_rofl:
Why seahawks?

The pass defense comes into play though when you start to play the elite QB's in the playoffs. Teams will switch up what they do for that one game because they know its a one game season at that point. (yea i know....used a cliche')

Hardly EVER talk FB over there. Beer and women. lol

They do a thing once per year called "Motherland." Seahawks fans from around the WORLD who belong to the site meet at the stadium and attend a game. It looks really cool. They're a great bunch.

I've actually been to the Seahawks training camp since they used to hold it at EWU where I went to college.

Interesting about the beer and women. So are Ravens fans pretty different from the other fans you encouter?

I think the Jets get a lot of attention with Rex as the head coach, I don't think he would have had nearly that much publicity in Baltimore. The teams in that division haven't figured it out yet, but they will eventually, the colts sure did whenever we played them!

He kept it all relative with all 5 teams after week 7. Its encouraging news even though most of us knew our secondary was coming together after the bye week last year...you dont know how badly we were trippin balls for the first 5 weeks of the season man lol.

Did I mis read it? It looked like he was comparing your second half to other team's full saeson. If he's comparing all teams thru the same number of games, then I see his point.

Ya he didnt lol I misread it big time. If he does one for all defenses after week 7 then its has some weight, right now its just skewed to make us feel good lol.

I did do that, I changed it yesterday. I just hope the numbers are right because I had to add... well, a lot of numbers and am NOT doing it again.

Now that Revis is back, it looks like the Jets have the secondary to fear. Ours on the other hand, is suspect and will probably cost us a Superbowl. Sound familiar? Well it's not exactly true. And so, I take you back to week 7. Opponent? No one.

The team's defense in general had a major revelation during the bye week. It seemed the team finally meshed with new defensive coordinator Greg Mattinson after an opening-play sack by JJ in Week 8. And they did. In fact, they gave up a statistically significant 30% fewer yards from then on.

After the bye week, the Ravens gave up only 180.4 yards/game in the air, as opposed to the 257.7 per game before that. This would rank them second in the NFL next to these teams:

Jets = 154.1 yds/game
Ravens = 180.4 yds/game
Broncos = 200.9 yds/game
Bills = 202 yds/game
Panthers = 225.7 yds/game

But the schedules were drastically different. Here are the average yards/game of the OPPONENTS played by each team FOR THE LAST 10 GAMES:

Jets = 196.1 yards/game*
Bills = 197.5 yards/game**
Panthers = 216.1 yards/game
Ravens = 233 yards/game
Broncos = 243.1 yards/game

*By the way, for purists, I had to adjust this number for the fact that the Jets played Curtis Painter for a half and the Bengals who "gave up on purpose". It's only fair.
**Them too.

When you factor for strength of passing, here's what the stats look like:

Rank (For last 10 games of year):
Bills = (202-197.5)/197.5 = .0228 = +2.28%
Panthers = (225.7-216.1)/216.1 = .0444 = +4.44%
Broncos = (200.9-243.1)/243.1 = -.174 = -17.4%
Jets = (154.1-196.1)/196.1 = -.214 = -21.4%
Ravens = (180.4-233)/233 = -.225 = -22.5%

As you can see, the Jets reduced opponents offenses by 21.4% of their average capacity, whereas the Ravens reduced opponents by 22.5%. Now, since I changed this for the last 10 games, and had to take off x amount of yards for the Bills and Jets "gifts" at the end of the year, and the scores are close enough, why don't we just call it a tie for first between the Jets and Ravens? The point is our pass D does not stink.

Let me start by saying I do appreciate all the work you've put in, it is reaaly good analysis.
That being said, you can't just "Adjust" stats that don't fit your theory.

Bengals game: Cincy only pulled their starters after the game was well out of hand.

Indy game: What can I say? It was a gift. But if you're going to adjust because we played against Painter for a quarter and a half, does that mean you should adjust the Ravens numbers because you had to play whoever was QBing for the browns twice? I mean, one of those games Flacco was the leading passer with only 155 yards.

Again, I appreciate the work you put into it and at the end of the day, those numbers mean little going into Monday night. But it is something fun to debate.

That's a neat little tid bit but I left last years' accolades/ deficiencies at Lucas. To me the only thing that mattered was our season got ended earlier then I wanted. It's in the past. I think the pass d will be better this year. In fact, ill place a wager on it.
