Pick One Surprise To Make The Team!

41 posts in this topic

Do you have one glaring surprise to make the team besides long snapper Morgan Cox?
Mine is linebacker Jason Phillips. Injuries may factor into your 53-man roster, but do you have one surprise?

Josh Wilson. Still can't believe we fleeced the Seahawks like that.

Seriously, my pick is Jason Phillips

Not sure how Cox is a surprise. I also think Phillips has proven too much to really be a surprise anymore. I don't think there will be any real surprises because this team is stacked. There are probably about 60 NFL caliber players on this team and we really have no idea who will make it an who won't.

Phillips isn't a surprise, as GTRavens pointed out, he's performed very well (despite what Mike Preston thinks).

No one's talking about him, but K.J. Gerard has a ton of talent. He probably will not make the team, but I would like to see him do well. He's a rangy, versatile DB.

For some reason, I don't really see us cutting any DB's. Due to the injuries, I think it would be wise to keep as much depth at the corner position as we can. But hey, that's just me.

I mean, right now we have a surplus..

Washington
Webb
Carr
Wilson
Williams
Fisher
Miller
Hawkins
and Gerard

(from what I remember)

And that's just the cornerbacks! Some of them have to go..

Also, throw in Ken Hamlin as my darkhorse. No one was talking about Jim Leonhard before the '08 season, either.

My Surprise pick would be Travis Fisher. He doesn't deserve to make the squad but he might just may. Sort of eke in like Frank Walker did last year.

What the heck, I'll shoot for Prince Miller. Here's to hoping he does enough, and that Harbs considers Wilson a starter so they won't use him as a returner as much. Maybe that will open the door for Miller.

If Cary Williams is not set in stone he would be the one I would think makes the team.
My other pick is Curtis Steele, for his speed his learning curve will be steep. I think the only thing Steele needs is to learn to read the blocks to get extra yards but he is lighting fast on his feet.

That would be a surprise. I agree...Fisher has looked awful in coverage this preseason.

i forgot his name, WR who used to be 81 smith, anyways although he is not the best receiver i like his toughness. He is like a robot.

Phillips hasn't really looked that good in pass coverage to me so I'm not really sold on him, but I could be wrong.

My surprise pick is... Prince Miller.

It's a gamble, but if he can get more reps as a returner and stop making those scary mistakes, he could be scary good. He busted out another good return, and I don't think we want to risk Wilson or Webb or Carr on returns when they're important pieces in a kinda thin secondary. He won't have much responsibility on the back end but he can give us a threat on returns. Assuming he can learn to catch them balls a little better lol.

Mark my words. Phillips will NOT MAKE THE 53 MAN ROSTER. Neither will Travis Fisher.

He looked pathetic in coverage (Phillips....well both for that matter)

He was terrible in play-action, he was burned before the ball even left the QBs hand.. Great at sniffing out run plays and tackling, though.

At this point, it would be surprising to see Troy Smith make the roster. The pump-fake at the goal line, taking two big sacks on the last drive, just a few mistakes in a sloppy night.

[s]Frank Walker[/s]

I'll go with KJ Gerard.

Am i the only one that thinks Miller is a bad player?

He can't cover a lick, and he isn't that good at returning (This assessment is based on the first 3 games because I didn't see the game tonight)

I think you're being a bit harsh. He's still a work in progress as a CB but whenever he fields a punt cleanly, he gets positive yardage.

I like that pick, he could be a good player if he gets some game time.

@Perfekt - I kind of feel as if Reed wouldn't be a surprise. I see the Ravens going Q, Mase, Clayton, Reed, Smith and heck, we might even keep D-Will to round out a 6 man corp. I think Demetrius Williams may get the boot since Reed and Smith can both contribute to ST, an area where D-WIll doesn't play, if we only hold on to 5 receivers to save space, that is.

I'm going with Reed as well. He actually had the same type of preseason that Harper had last year. He made some great plays but missed some as well. That said, I think of all the young WR he clearly seperated himself from the likes of Harper, Smith (who will probably make the roster due to specialt teams) and Riley (who is probably headed to IR now).

Not after tonight. If you watch the highlights he got roasted at least twice. Once on a long completion and once on a TD. He looks absolutely lost is pass coverage. I don't think he makes it.

I disagree. Someone who has mostly been on the practice squad and has been hurt would be a surprise to make the roster. The PS is a place to put player who is not good enough to make the 53-man roster, and they are not usually groomed to be successes making the roster. I often just see it as a place to stash players because teams can. Sure, there are exceptions, but players that are put on the PS are there just as practice bodies.
