Ravens Acquire Josh Wilson In Trade With Seahawks

212 posts in this topic

I think that it's ironic how the team has flipped strengths and weaknesses again from only a month ago. We went from having questions about the secondary and feeling confident in the O-line, to having questions about the O-line and feeling (fairly) confident in the secondary.

Amazing what a difference only a month makes in the NFL.

What I like about this trade: we gave up little to get him. He's young and has play making abilities and experience at both CB & KR. He is a product of Maryland, former teammate of Foxworth and he's coming home. He's now playing for a contender, on one of the best D's around. He's in a contract year.

Nothing but incentives here for this kid to play lights out!

What I don't like is his height. Wish he was a little taller but, the good still outweighs the bad. At least he shouldn't have many helmet to helmet penalties, if any at all.

You're right. I think we will be fine on the O-line when Gaither comes back though. Everything is just a matter of endurance on the line and good thing Joe isn't a statue.

Wilson is pretty good and has a lot of upside. I know this doesn't mean much (unless your a gamer) but in Madden 11 he's rated an 82 overall and 95 speed.

Here are some good quotes from the Seattle message boards, couldn't find one bad post against him:
Josh is going to make a Probowl, just watch...
WILLLLLLLLLLLLSOOOOOOOOOON! We'll miss ya man..

PLease say it isnt so or at least give us a higher round then fifth!
Josh is a proven ball hawker, game changing nickel back.

Yeah, what a dumb move. I can't believe they only netted a 5th round pick. Ridiculous.

He's definitely a starting corner with great speed. He's also a fantastic KR. I'm pretty shocked that we let him go.

What the heck? Josh Wilson was one our best defensive play makers and a second rounder! He was a solid cover corner!!
I don't get it! We are thin at CB!! WHY???!!
Yeah I mean he has experience starting so that's always good and even if it's a 4th round pick, Ozzie will make moves in the draft. I am VERY happy about this move.

I think it pushes Fisher off the Roster.

Fabe
Webb
Carr
Wilson
Williams
Miller

So as of right now, I wouldn't say we have all the stars aligned for a SB run, but this just got us a whole lot closer.

If Flacco breaks out and the O line gets it together, then we have all the stars aligned.

I almost spit my food out of my mouth at Chilis when I got the text from WNST about the Wilson trade. I was a BIG fan of his at Seattle. He has a lot of abilities for someone his size and weight- definitely a STEAL. Ozzie continues to surprise me with his genius trades. I definitely see Wilson sharing time at CB with Carr and Webb in the 5 until he's loosened up to take over the #2 slot. He's also a monster return man!

We're making a run at NFC West players this offseason! And I like it, taking all the talent..

Boldin
Bulger
Wilson
Redding
Harris (even though he's on IR)

My favorite thing about this trade is that I got to find out how absolutely hilarious/self-deprecating seahawks fans are. Check out the comments on this article:

..And Hilarity Ensues:

Yeah, that wasn’t supposed to be a great thing. I keep checking because of the rumor something big was happening. I hope this wasn’t the “something big”.

You mean with the press being told to wait?
I think that was just so PC/Schneider could make their little “we don’t really understand how the NFL works” speech.

I think this move pushes Fisher off the roster and I think Miller goes to PS and we sign a late cut from a CB heavy team...

So to start the season we are looking at:

CB 1 Washington - 5'11 super speedy, looks improved from last year
CB 2 Carr - 5'9 much improved, fearless, good across the middle
CB 3 Webb - 5'10 hyped up, fast, strong tackler, nose for the ball
CB 4 Wilson - 5'9 ball hawk, super speedy, playmaker
CB 5 Williams - 6'2 monster corner, fast, big hitter
CB 6 TBA

And mid season we are looking at:

CB 1 Washington
CB 2 Webb
CB 3 Wilson
CB 4 Carr
CB 5 Williams
CB 6 TBA

We carry 6 corners, and 5 are on the team right now. By signing Wilson, Miller loses his edge as a PR/KR is not as big of a necessity since Wilson is a burner. As I've said before, I am starting to love the big play ability of this secondary and I think Wilson is a natural fit for the Ravens D... he will make some big time plays this season

Josh IS a Raven - "I couldn't be happier" "“It’s a great situation: great team, great defense, great opportunity. As a player, you couldn’t write your own story any better. With the Ravens, you can compete for a championship.”
I still see Webb working in the nickel all year. Like said before, I see them wanting him to work into that starting position. He's still a second year player coming off an major injury. Which is why I saw Wilson getting above Carr. It appears he's a more physical playmaker than Carr is which is what we need at the corner position.

Talk about owning another FO. A Seahawks' fan made a great point: Since Wilson was a 2nd rounder, if he had left in free agency next year they still would've gotten a better compensatory pick than the best possible pick they could get out of us in this trade.

Amazingly bad business on their end... amazingly good eye for us. I love how Ozzie preys on new coaches who need to look like they're doing something(read: Josh McDaniels/Pete Carroll).

Preys on the GMs not the coaches. And if it is indeed the coaches who make all the personnel decisions, then thats their Owners fault for getting played by the Wizard.

I'm going to be very honest. No, I would not be happy. I have a huge bias against short CB's the year Wilson came out, he measured just under 5'9". He gets pushed around by larger WR's and consistently gives up big plays. What some people did like about him was that even though he gave up big plays, he also seemed to come up with some big plays of his own, in key situations. I thought the bad, outweighed the good though. He does have real value as a return guy though. In fact, I thought he was the best return man the Seahawks had. There is where his real value is. I fully expect the Ravens to use Wilson alot, especially in the role he played in Seattle, as a Nickleback. That is why the deal is good for us, we should get a 4th rounder out of the deal.

Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but I think Wilson could start at #2 by week 1 instead of Carr. OR maybe I am just that uncomfortable with Carr on the outside (despite his preseason play) :P. How long would it take for Wilson to learn the system well enough to take over the #2 spot?

i like this move personally.... if you look at his past track record...his biggest attribute that has been on display has been his speed...from the Combine (2007) to now....his speed has always been one of his biggest (but not only) attribute to the team.

I feel Ozzie Pulled the trigger not only because he could fill the viod at CB with experience and play well, but also in the special teams game....in which his speed can really showcase and be on display, we all know Harbaughs history with the Eagles and special teams...so this move might be a good one also on that front too.....field position is key in any football game.

yet again...speed isnt everything...see Yamon Figurs

Not only Patrick Willis but how about a Boldin-Fitzgerald Reunion in Baltimore! Now the question is I wonder if we could pry Earl Thomas for a 6th or 7th lol. If so Secondary Set!

Great trade, however it seems the guy has a lot of swagger and my command a large contract so I think it's a 1 year rental. Good move for now anyway.
I like this move a lot. Hopefully he'll play in the 4th pre-season game so he can get a little playing time in our defense. The fact we got him for a 5th... we robbed them. I don't think anything will top robbing Denver in the Draft but great move again by Ozzie. Now for the 1 year rental, I wouldn't lock him up long term but maybe extend his contract 1 or 2 years and I think it would be a great move.

Yeah, I think he'll play the nickel as he's by far the best fit there. Plus, that means he doesn't start which keeps the 5th from becoming a 4th.

One Seahawk fan said:
what the heck.. this cannot be true.. he is one of the better young players on this team.. he was the one who caused the pick 6 last week for thomas... the only way i would be ok with this is if we have a deal in the works for revis involving the pick that we get from the ravens and leroy hill....
Someone else said:
His kick return skills are worth a 2nd round pick alone!
I like how much experience he has. I bet this signing worries Prince Miller, but I think we can hide him out on the practice squad.

It was unlikely for us to go out and land another crazy blockbuster trade for a nasty CB so this is more like something I expected to happen. We got (from what I'm hearing on the disgruntled Seahawks fanboards) the best CB on their (mediocre) team. I think that makes homeboy a perfect fit for our nickle and dime packages, which is what I'm hearing he may be slotted for. He may be small but I hear he's got some fire in him so I'm willing to give him a shot.

So then who becomes #2 at CB if Josh is the nickle back? Does Webb sit the first few games then get bumped into the starting gig later on, or does Carr hold on to those duties? Idk if I'm really sold on Carr on the outside either, and I do kinda want to see Webb become a great corner for us, so at some point I would like to see him opposite of Washington.

All in all I like this trade. All we gave up was a possible 4th! I think the Seahawks fans should be feeling a little shafted right now. Pete Carrol better rebuild well or his seat will start getting hot real fast lol.

Oh Yeah if they have a bad season, it makes wonder if they would draft Patrick Peterson or one of the top corners in next year's draft to fill that void. I also wonder if this means Earl Thomas will play Corner for a year before going back to Safety when they get a Corner.

Though I think we could pry Thomas from them for a 6th or 7th! Do it Ozzie!
