Lack Of Running Game In The Preseason

16 posts in this topic

I know we don't have a need to push Rice and we want to get Flacco and the receivers on the same page. But, will this have any effect on the O-line? We spend the whole pre season dropping back in pass coverage, will they be ready to blow off the line in week 1? I feel like they aren't getting many reps (in game situations, not practice) in run blocking.

Every new formation that the Ravens don't normally use in a regular season game just means that other defenses are going to be forced to spend that much more time preparing for it.

Just think, now teams have to prepare for the possibility of 3 different running backs, our empty backfield package, our 4 wr sets, rb's lining up at WR, TE's lining up at WR, DT's lining up at FB..ect...

The point of establishing the pass was to help Flacco and the receivers build a rhythm going in to the regular season. Rice will get a lot of carries but Flacco has never been in a game situation with Boldin or Stallworth and has never really run 3/4 receiver sets on every other down. It's for experience, not a game plan for the season.

We haven't run in the preseason because it hasn't been necessary too. Do you see teams like the Jets, Titans, and Vikings running a lot with their starters? Of course not. They already have mastered the running game. That's a lot more about brute force and time control than it is showcasing Mcgahee's stiff arm, AD's fumblitis, and CJ's track speed. Why waste reps for your QB?

The Ravens only averaged 3.8 ypc in the 2008 preseason... Ray Rice only had 3.6 ypc in the 2009 preseason... It's not a big deal, the Ravens will get it going the the regular season.

agree

Passing game is much more complex...especially with new receivers and tight ends.
Seems like the Ravens are starting to click.

Run plays lead to more injuries generally speaking, especially for O-Lineman.They're vulnerable down there in the pile and the last thing we need is more nicked up O-Lineman.

Ravens have a proven run game. Since we acquired several new targets for Joe, I would expect to see more passing in the preseason. I think we all agree that now is the time for us to showcase our passing game. We will never abandon our running game. I believe we will show a more balanced offense this season
Testing out the new weapons. We'll go back to Raven football soon. But I do love to pass
I think your seeing the Ravens offense for the present and the future. Flacco has a great arm and the addition of Boldin makes the Ravens offense dangerous.

We know how to run the ball. We were getting flacco used to boldin and stallworth

Unless the running back is Ray Rice you get more yards if the ball is up in the air.

The preseason games are for working on things. These teams don't gameplan for each other.

There's no need to work on running when we are already good in that phase of the game.
