Haruki Nakamura

Last Night Haruki Nakamura looked spectacular last night. He had an interception, deflected a few passes and had some great tackles. Based on last nights performance i think he put himself ahead of Chris Carr on our depth chart. What do you guys think?

Ruki is a safety, Carr is a CB.

Granted, I do not get to see as many games as if I had lived in Baltimore, but why are so many people quick to throw Carr in the garbage can. He is not a #41! I must be missing something because when I saw a lot of Carr toward the end of the season and in the post-season, he pretty much shined. [b]When did he suck to warrant such a lynching???

Statistically, Carr was the leading tackler and had a sack last night. But yes, they play two different positions, so it's silly to speculate this topic.

I like Haruki, but his interception was lucky. It wasn't some kind of Ed Reed play, where he made it happen. It's still an interception but it has no basis on Haruki's improved football skill, as it was his good awareness and reflexes that notched that interception.

That's pretty much my feeling on the play as well. He essentially allowed the pass to be completed and Smith couldn't seal the deal. The guy that made a play there was Ellerbe, not Ruki if you ask me. That said I thought Nakamura was very good throughout the game.

I thought that awareness and reflexes were important attributes. Do you say similar things about deflection interceptions? Because those happen all the time, and they're basically gift wrapped. If you play your position and make it harder for the receiver to catch the ball, things can happen.

I would say that Nakamura is definitely ahead of Carr on the safety depth chart, but I doubt he's overtaken him on the corner.

Like others have said, Haruki and Carr play different positions but like Mike Preston wrote last night, the Ravens have to find a way to get Haruki on the field more. He's got great range and can hit too.

I definitely think that Nakamura has earned the right to start this year until Reed returns by the 5th or 6th game.

Ahead of who though? Zibby has been steady at FS and so has Landry at SS.

hakuri's got to be on the field when possible really

he seems to have a nack of being in the right place at the right time, like has already been said he'll probably play until reed's back playing at full fitness

I honestly wonder when people make threads like this if they actually watch the games. Nakamura at cornerback? lol...
Hey, someone was talking about him as a TE in another thread, using his ability to block as a reason...

Who says we can't try more 3 safety packages this season while Ed is out? Zibby/Landry/Nakamura would be a rather good safety combination.

Man, I am laughing my peanuts off too. Watch Carr cover and you will see a CB.

I'm more interested to see if he beats out Zibby at free. Wasn't Nakamura above Zibby on the depth chart in '08? Nonetheless, we would have very competent 3 safety sets.

Yeah, but go look at the source o**** that suggestion.

Nakamura needs to be on the field, but in place of who? Zibby is a great "step in" for Reed and Landry, for the most part (do not use the stiff arm from last night as proof), is strong as SS.

The Ravens have always been known to play a lot of 3 safety formations on defense. I don't see why that would change now. Nakamura played a lot of Dime back in 08 and 09 before getting injuried, so i fully expect him to be in that role this year.

The difference will be that in the past Nakamura was used as more of a blitzing safety in that Dime package, this year he has improved his coverage abilities, so the Ravens will probably feel more comfortable with him macthed up on a WR or TE.

The OP asked if Nakamura is ahead of Carr, that is foolish. However what would be a better question is, has the play of Nakamura in the pass game, pushed a guy like Travis Fisher or Prince Miller off the roster?

With Williams being down the first 2 games, both Fisher and Miller probably would have made the roster. However, if Webb can come back strong and Nakamura can continue to cover well, the Ravens will probably keep 5 CBs and use that other roster spot for a DL or LB.

I think ruki could hold down nickel. Just think if we could have fabe, webb, ruki, landry, and zibby on the field at the same time.

It's looking like we'll see that a lot come the regular season.

Pass deflections show the players ability to make a play on the ball. Haruki did not make Smith juggle the ball, as from what I remember, Eli threw it a little low and behind and Smith had to compensate (but still should have caught it). Haruki was just doing his job in being around Smith, and he happened to receive a gift for doing so.

The best way to say it is, do Reed, Revis, Woodson or any great secondary player "just do their jobs" when playing the way they do? Do any elite football players just do their jobs? My answer is no and on that play I believe Haruki was just doing his job. What if Eli threw to Smith in stride? He would have gotten another 3-4 yards easy because Nakamura was behind Smith trying to catch up.

noy ellerbe actually made the play by tipping the ball and it took great focus to catch that pass. it was not all on his own but the point is when given the chance he makes the most out of it and for that im greatful to have him.
