Use of Baltimore Tight Ends

42 posts in this topic

Has anybody else notice that we use guys that are not normally tight end for us as a tight end. Examples of this are Cody, Ngata, McClain and Chester. They end up lining up as a TE and go down field for the blocks. This shows the talent on this team and I wouldn't be surprised if people start game planning against our tricks and fake punts and stuff.

Harbaugh seems to really like using the biggest players he can find in those 'jumbo' packages in goal line situations, which means that guys like Ngata and Cody get to follow in the footsteps of players like the Fridge.

What? This isn't a "trick" at all. This is simply putting in an extra lineman... basically announcing to the world that you are going to run the ball. And we don't care that you know we are running the ball, because you can't stop it. That's really all it is.

Do you remember that patriots game? We lined up in the same foramtion over and over. We basically gave them our play every time and they still could not stop it. We played with a lineman in the tight end position most of the game. I was at the game and they kept repeating a lineman as an eligable reciever.

Yeah, that was pretty sad. Belichick is supposed to be a defensive guru, and those championship teams were great because of their tough defences. All of the sudden, it looks like no-name guys who were drafted because Bill kept trading down to get more and more picks can't quite keep up against elite teams.

Then again, that victory meant alot to the Ravens, and the Patriots just couldn't bring their intensity up to match. Although they'll tell you that they prepare all the same for every game, no matter who the opponent is, you can't tell me that there weren't Ravens carrying a bit of extra hate in their hearts for the team that had beat them in such a questionable manner during the regular season.

for a guy that has no real facial expression a defensive guru is an overstatement. The Sultan of Defense is none other then Rex Ryan the head coach of the New york Jets...

Bill Belichick was the Rex Ryan of his era. Well, no, that was Buddy, but Belichick earned his bones with a formidable Giants D.

 What does a guy's facial expressions, or lack thereof, have to with his ability to coach?

Some people feel that fire and passion is a big deal in a coach.

J...just no. So if you don't have an emotive face you can't be excellent at something? What sort of reasoning is that?

And yes, we do put in bigger guys at the TE position typically when we're going to run. One of these days, though, Flacco's gonna reel that ball back in and toss it to Ngata for the score.

I'm not saying that facial expression have anything to do with play calling or coaching ability. A more dynamic speaker can motivate a group quicker, that is all I'm saying.

That would be kind of interesting if Ngata was an eligible receiver down field.

I wouldn't say that I can't stand it, but I don't quite buy it. The ability to motivate and be respected is what is key (along with a hefty knowledge of the game and the ability to manage the egos of highly talented, wealthy men). Some coaches will have be very expressive, but Belichick has won championships while maintaining a fairly calm demeanour. Jeff Fisher is another relatively 'cool' coach who has had success. Tony Dungy was another.

On the other hand, you need to care a little. Otherwise, you might be Dick Jauron.

The fake punt caught the Skins by surprise and I think they probably wrote in there playbook somewhere an answer for a fake punt.
[/quote]
Was this supposed to be another topic, or were Baltimores TE's involved in this play?

Well, looking at the opening post, anyone on the Ravens roster can be called a TE.

Cox, the tight end, snapped it to Nakamura, the tight end, as Sam Koch, the tight end, distracted the silly 'Skins. Nakamura, the tight end, then took off after being sprung by a line consisting of, you guessed it, Tight ends. Nakamura, the tight end, then took it all the way to the one before being tackled by a non-tight end.

Tight End.

The Ravens use the off balanced line quite often. This is used for the extra blocking needed to either run to that side or throw the defense off and do some type of play action. This is not a trick play nor does it qualify those tackles as a tight end. It only qualifies them as an eligible reciever if they notify refs of their eligiblity. I guess to answer the OP question, YES I think anyone who watches football notices that the Ravens do this. Point?

The point was that you can take a defensive player example "Nakamara" and teach him a bit about "Offensive blocking schemes" as Cam calls it. Then he becomes a legitimate TE that you can use for short yards giving plenty of room for Running backs to run between the tackles and then the tight ends..

Are you trying to point out that Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta were not involved in that fake punt we ran Against the Skins?
I believe that they were lined up in the special teams for that particular segment.

So, if you were a coach, you would make Nakamura (5'10" and 200 lbs) a TE?

Do you just like to make stuff up to help try and prove whatever it is your try to prove in your posts?

Neither was involved in that play. Its not even fun arguing with you.

My sarcastic post messed him up big time.

Then again, he doesn't need much help there...
