Stand Pat Or Look To Improve?

7 posts in this topic

Hey guys, I am so sick of reading about ridiculous trades and super fantasy teams that I wanted to run a realistic team by you and get your opinions. This team was drafted yesterday in one of my pay leagues:

QB Kevin Kolb
WR Miles Austin
WR Steve Smith (CAR)
WR Mike Simms-Walker
RB MJD
RB Ryan Grant
TE Antonio Gates
W/R/T Jermichael Finley
BN Knowshon Moreno
BN Arian Foster
BN Devin Aromashadu
BN Chad Henne
BN Rothlisburger

Okay so thoughts... I am very happy with my TE and RB depth, and have decided to start two TEs at least to start until one of these RBs emerge as a legit starter (healthy Moreno or Foster in HOU). I am worried, however about my WR corps because only Austin is on a playoff team with a good QB and my only depth is Aroma. I wish I had a 2nd WR that is on a playoff team to feel secure. As for my QBs, yes I took 3 and that is because I don't have 100% faith in Kolb and think Henne could take off in Miami with Marshall. I took Ben (as much as I hate him) because he is an insurance policy starting in Week 4 if both young QBS fail me and it also gives me trade fodder.

Thoughts? Opinions? Who would you keep and who would you try to deal? Smith could be a bonified #1 with Matt Moore if healthy and MSW is the #1 in JAX so I have three #1s but only one of them has a good QB throwing to him so whats the point?

So thoughts, opinions, advice, and suggestions? Thanks guys.

How many teams are in your league? 12?

You are set at RB. With good depth. I would try and hold onto that because the waiver wire is always thin at RB.

I wouldn't worry much about your starting WRs. They are pretty solid. It doesn't matter if they aren't on playoff teams. You have 3 guys who are all #1's on their teams. That's solid, they're get their targets.

You do have to worry about depth though. The 3 QB is the thing that stands out. You might want to think hard about cutting ties with Henne just to make a spot on your team for better WR depth. But before you do that, is there anyone on the waiver work looking at? I guess now with the rise of Mike Williams, he was probably drafted. But keep an eye on guys like Brandon Lafell or Golden Tate. Both guys could be that rookie break out as well.

It's not a bad team, I wouldn't worry to much. If something happens to one of your star WR, you have the depth at RB to get a good WR.

Yeah its a 12 man league. I will definitely be looking to the waiver wire to see if a rookie WR steps up like an Arrelious Benn. As for QBs if Kolb looks the part after 2 weeks I'll cut bait with Henne and grab the top performing WR on the wire or try and trade Henne for one. I got lucky because all of my RBs are #1s on their teams and almost none have a running back by committee...MJD, Grant, Foster, and even Moreno are all pretty much go to guys on their teams. This isn't a beginner league either so I was pleasently surprised to see Foster and Morneo last as long as they did. I obviously waited on QBs til late and thats a risky move.

The WR issue still bugs me. LOVE my TE corps though!

Love the team. Especially for 12 teams. I don't like Steve Smith. He is overhyped in my opinion. And Sims Walker is going to be inconsistent. I would almost try to trade Sims Walker for Dwayne Bowe. Bowe had two very good first years and dropped off last year. But he is back in shape and ready to go. Bowe is a talented receiver and Cassel is a better qb than any other qb he has had throwing to him.

QB is a good situation imo. Big ben is a good qb and you can matchup play.

On whether you should trade or stand pat I think you should always be looking to improve your team. If you can get a good trade, then go for it. Try to minimize your weaknesses without sacrificing your strengths. You could look to trade Gates for a big time receiver. I think Jermichael will be a stud this year and you could get a big name reciever in return for Gates. Package Gates and Steve Smith and get like a Calvin Johnson and someone else. Just my opinion.

Thats a good call, if Finley takes off then I could package Gates for a big time receiver. But, in this league the flex play includes a TE as well so I can start a WR/RB/or TE and with Gates and Finley they could both put up huge numbers comparable to a no.2 WR. I actually like Smith in 2010 - he caught a TD pass in the final 4 games that Moore started. Remember, most of the season Jake Delhomme was his QB and Delhomme was awful last year, Moore is an upgrade. I think Smith could catch 8-10 TDs with 1000+ yards as he is really the only legit receiving threat in Carolina. MSW I am not sure about, and would like to package him with a Fred Jackson for a no. 2 receiver but he is the unquestioned #1 WR in JAX... I don't have much faith in Garrard but he could serve as a decent no.3

I am wary of anything KC related and wouldn't look to trade for Bowe until I see how he fits in the offense in 2010.

Good points all around, thanks bro.

Keep em comin guys, this is great.

To me it all depends... Is this a PPR league??? Because if it isn't I'm willing to bet anything that one of your to bench potential star RB's (Foster and Moreno) are going to outproduce your tight-ends on a regular basis ( at least they are going to be the safer bet week in week out)... If it's PPR, I wouldn't trade a thing unless something offers something big... If it isn'tt I'd definetely look to trade one of the tight-ends in some deal, that get's you a top receiver like mega-tron, Greg Jennings, Roddy White or Brandon Marshall (way undervalued in many drafts imo...) But in general I'd feel pretty confident with the team you drafted, and the better option might very well be to wait until week 3 or 4, to see the value of players like Ben, Henne, Moreno and Foster go through the roof... Also your TE's might very well gain a lot of value after a couple of games...

I didn't even notice that you drafted two stud TEs. There really isn't any reason to have two studs at TE. You'll probably end up starting either Moreno or Foster as the Flex. That'll leave so much talent sitting on your bench from one of your TEs.

Usually if I pick up one of the Top 5, I might get a TE late or might not even pick up a second one until the bye week.

You might want to think about packaging either Finley or Gates with another player to step up your depth at WR as well.
