Rice And McGahee

"Some of those touches could occur in the Wildcat formation. During a red-zone exercise Tuesday afternoon, Rice lined up directly behind center Chris Chester and took a direct snap. Several plays later, running back Willis McGahee took the direct snap and handed off to Rice."

I'm guessing we will see Rice and McGahee running the Wildcat when we reach the redzone in the next 3 Pre-Season games. Should be a fun year to watch with Cam, Saunders and Zorn mixing things up in the offense.

The Ravens' will not be a Wildcat team. That is not to say that they will NEVER run the Wildcat but why would they use McGahee and Rice to do so when they have a 3rd string QB that is made for it in Troy Smith? Judging from Harbaugh's comments I think this was more a ploy to keep the Jets' defense off their feet than anything else.

You just have to work the Wildcat into 10% of your practice and your opponent will be forced to spend some time scheming against it.

I'd love to see Rice heave a lefty pass to Flacco for a score against the Jets. Particularly if Revis was covering Flacco.

If I remember correctly the Wildcat worked pretty well against the Jets last season...

True, but the Dolphins practice more and run the Wildcat better than any team in the league.

Troy Smith package worked very well in 2008. Then we didn't see it at all last year. I don't think it matters what you throw at Jets defense... Rex has been waiting for his first game against the Ravens for 2 years now. He's going to do everything he can to get a little revenge on the Ravens.

I remember Troy getting stuffed by the Dolphins in the play-offs running the wildcat in '08 and his long pass to Flacco aside, I don't think it was that successful.

As for Rex, the same way he'll be looking to get "revenge", I'm sure Cam will be cooking up schemes too.

wildcat sucks

Yep. The only team it worked on and was fun watching was the Dolphins. Go figure, its always the craze starter who does it best.

Troy smith has said many many times that he is not a wildcat qb, and he doesn't like to be considered one. He is black, that doesn't make him automatically a "pat white." Give up on the whole idea of Troy being used this way. I think Flacco in motion with a handoff from rice would be a much better play. This isn't madden people. FFS

What sparked the race card being dealt? I haven't seen anyone use it in an argument on this thread, so why even mention it?

Agree with DrMoonTooth

nobody said anything about troy smith being the best option for the wildcat in our offense because he is black. Alot of QB's like to run with the ball and they arent black. People mention his name with the wildcat because he is athletic. He can run with the ball and throw as well.

wild cats are super cool when the work.

1% of the time. <_<

For real. The Dolphins couldn't execute the Wildcat on us in 2008 when Ryan was the D-Coordinator. I wouldn't expect us to try it on Monday Night, either. Other than a few plays in 2008, Cameron isn't a "kitchen sink" kind of guy.

Pat White is one of the worst QBs in the league

Back on topic, I remember one play when we did run the wildcat. I believe the play ended with Ray Rice throwing a pick on a very ugly pass

No.. to Wildcat

I love hearing this. :229031_rofl: It worked on ONE play with the toss to Flacco. Other than that, all it did was confuse our O, especially T Smith, and we had to keep burning timeouts.

Ridiculous!

I am glad I am not the only one who feels the same about this. What a waiste of time and energy trying to execute trick plays. Stick to the playbook and things will be just fine.

Our two most successful trick plays of the 08 season were a reverse end around that Clayton took all the way, and a TD Pass by Clayton to Mason.

Both of those plays have been around for ages, and aren't "wildcat"

The wildcat could work well in the redzone with both McGahee and Rice on the field together. I don't think it should be something we use outside the 10 yardline, like in years past. However eliminating the QB in the redzone could be very successful.

My reason for this is because you add another weapon close to the goaline, instead of having a QB that the defense doesn't have to account for.

However this is something that will probably be used only once a game. I wouldn't read to much into this, only maybe that Troy Smith's days are numbered.

There is alot of risk in running trick plays. That's why they aren't used very often in the NFL. Miami and NYJ need to be roughed up <deleted> by good defenses a few times before they will abandon calling themselves "wildcat" teams.

I do wish that Flacco would have scored when he caught that pass in 08 though. That would have been sweet.
Yeah, his damn legs got tangled which caused him to take a spill....great catch though!

I would consider Flacco's arm and ability to read the defense as a big weapon. We dont need to trick the defense. With McGahee at RB and Ngata at fullback, thats pretty much all the trickery you need.

that would have been awesome. He was real close too.
He was down at the 12 or something close to that right?
