Glen Coffee, the backup for Frank Gore on the 49ers. RB out of alabama says he is quitting football. Shocking... I wonder what the reason is.

Wow that is a surprise. I just bumped him up on my FF rankings like an hour ago. He's only 23. I'm thinking that he's sick of some sort of game that Singletary is playing with him.

There's something here that isn't right.

I hope he saved up for his early retirement.

I had thought this was some poor attempt at a joke thread when I first read the title. After seeing that it's not, I'm not quite sure what to think. I'd definitely like to hear the entire story as to why Coffee wants to quit, and what he plans on doing post-football.

Amazing and to make it easier, a 2nd Year player don't retire unless they have a career injury ending... 2nd year players Quit.

Found this on PFT about it, it seems like Training Camp was a little tough on him:
Per Maiocco, Coffee exits the game after drawing the ire of position coach Tom Rathman by getting blown up by Mike Balogun on a blitz.
Shocking.... but come on Glen, if he was going to pull this stunt than why did he ever want to come out for the Draft... crazy man. I guess people who drafted him in FF will now be making roster moves to replace him.

"Coach Mike Singletary explained RB Glen Coffee’s attitude. “His demeanor was, ‘I really hate to lay this on you, coach. But since college, my heart just hasn’t been in it. As a matter of fact, I came out early because my heart wasn’t in it,’ Singletary said.
Coach Mike Singletary described his conversation with RB Glen Coffee. “All I asked him was, ‘Are you sure? Have you really thought about this?’ He said, ‘Yes, I have. I thought about it for a long time.’” Singletary added that he appreciated Coffee told him face-to-face. "

Wow.. so he came out early because his heart wasn't in it so what made him think his heart wouldn't be in it when he got the pros. That's the most bone head excuse I have heard, my heart wasn't in it... than why did you ever want to play football Glen.

This is strange. Coffee was a decent back-up to Frank Gore. It takes a lot of heart to play football in the NFL, so it's pretty easy to understand where he's coming from. It sounds like he got pressured into entering the draft. I wish Glen luck and I hope he finds his calling.

I'm pretty sure his 2.7ypc was the lowest of all running backs with significant carries. Thats gotta be disheartening.

Haha, I'm sure it is. The 49ers don't have the best O-Line, either. Maybe some one should make him aware of that :229031_rofl:.

Well they did draft two first round maulers, I just think he couldn't take the criticism and/or workload and it destroyed his confidence.

Allegedly (according to Twitter), Glen Coffee quit to pursue a new career path as a minister. I haven't confirmed yet, though.

........ Interesting. Good Luck to Glen on that, maybe the 49ers can have him say a prayer that they win the Division and have a shot at the Super Bowl. ;)

Well if he's becoming a minister thats a happy ending.

I mean, so dedicated to his faith he passes up millions of dollars and becoming somewhat famous to spread the Word, thats true dedication. I always wondered why he looked like he had potential yet sucked.

Wants to be a minister.

Well good luck to him in the future.
Takes a lot of dedication and faith to give up million dollar contracts.

You have only one life so if you can pursue your dream then do it
