Well... I don't know how I feel about Smith or Bulger at this point.. I guess we will see. But at this point you are pretty much coming out and saying that Gruden and those guys are idiots cause all 3 felt like that Smith would be the back up for Flacco. I don't think he played a good game and neither did Bulger. So I am not taking sides.. Just saying... All 3 commentators said Smith would be the number 2. If he was THAT terrible tonight I don't think they would have said that. I think Bulger should be the number 2 but I don't know. We will see I guess.
They said, in all likelihood, Bulger will not be here next year and that Troy would be our long term backup....certainly not this year though. You mis-heard or misunderstood.

Neither Gruden or Jaws have been covering this team since training camp started though, so they don't exactly have informed opinions. Many people covering the team have said Bulger has looked really good while Troy has struggled in training camp.

Both did bad. Troy did worse although he was given so much more pressure.

Since there is only one game should this really be an arguement/topic?

We're talking Troy Smith, an argument was inevitable.

I like Troy, always have. The guy has rotten tonsils at the wrong time, such is life. I hope he gets an opportunity to start somewhere in the league because behind the right o-line, I think he would be decent.

im still not understanding why people on this board are so quick to bash smith. i get killed for questioning gaither work ethic and then we praise the idiot who bashes smith for having a off game. btw bulger was off tonite as well but its ok because its only the first preseason game.

stop the hate and just be glad we have depth at a key position.

Just look at each of their throwing motions and releases. T Smith is WAY behind Bulger.
Explain this, Troy Smith knows the Ravens more then Bulgar does?
any genius would think obviously because he has been here longer.
With the pass protection the O-line was giving him any smart minded QB would have ran it in for TD.

I like him too and he seems like a really nice, down to earth guy. However, I do not think he will ever start in the NFL.

Still, in our opinions the depth doesn't go past Bulger. It would be kinda nice to see Troy improve, but the question is will he? Will Bulger? We don't know, but most importantly, Bulger unlike Troy will make Flacco improve and maybe he's already begun to do so.

What the hell are you asking here?

Yes, of course Smith is more familiar with the Ravens and their offense - I think that's what you meant by "Troy Smith knows the Ravens more then Bulgar does? any genius would think obviously because he has been here longer."

What's your point here? - "With the pass protection the O-line was giving him any smart minded QB would have ran it in for TD."

What is there to explain? Bulger's gets the ball out quicker than Troy.

And Troy's knowledge of the offense means squat. He didn't have much protection tonight at all but his lack of height, windup delivery and inaccuracy were all on show.

And his TD score was a called play; he didn't do it on the fly.

You mean an off career? I really, really wanted to see Smith play well tonight. But, as always, I was disappointed. I'd like to see him come in at the #2 role next game. No excuses. If he doesn't perform (he won't), then we end this rediculous Troy vs EVERYONE talk. This **** is getting out of hand!

dont give credit to bulger for flaccos play. if anything flacco has been helping bulger so that arguement of vet leadership went out the window. i really do think were reading to much into the 1st preseason game.

Reading into small sample sizes is what we football fans do.

You have to admit watching and talking to Bulger has likely helped Joe though.

He completed two passes. You make no sense.
2 passes in the entire 2nd half...
What I meant by completing a pass, is making a play.
He was sacked at least 5 times, but is supposed to be very fast and agile, no matter what line he is behind.
And to the person that said our O line at the time, was a bunch of "scrubs" that's really insulting and false.
Bulger looked a lot better than Smith. He still needs time to develop with his new team. Bulger is proven, you don't need to worry about him.
Anyone saying that you can't judge Smith after one preseason game is wrong, simply because this is not his first preseason game, nor his first NFL game.
Clausen looked better than Smith! And that was his first preseason game.

Who actually thought that was not a QB draw?

If you watched at ESPN, I think it was Ron Jaworski that pointed it out before the snap. He guessed it to be a QB draw because of how spread out the receivers were.

Look, I think it's crazy that Gruden and Jaws were saying Troy should be #2 because of his wildcat abilities. lol SERIOUSLY???

1) We don't need the wildcat to be a high powered offense and win games.

2) Bulger fits our actual offensive identity better than Troy.

3) Bulger has been better than Troy in training camp based on all reports.

And even if Troy ends up getting second string and ahead of Bulger, I'm gonna keep saying it. The entire QB siutation revolves around Flacco. And Bulger will bring more to the table for Joe in less than a full season than Troy ever has and ever will.

He said who DIDN'T think it was a draw....it was very obvious and it was directed to the confusing Ravenmore74.

I was reinforcing his point. Sorry for not making it clear.

I always get confused by all the fuss over Troy Smith. From what I can tell, the guy is a great athlete who just doesn't have the skill set to be an NFL QB, at least not a prototypical passer.

Is there anyone out there who isn't a Buckeyes fan that actually thinks this guy is a starting NFL QB for anything other than a wildcat offense??? And unless you think we should go to the wildcat, why on earth would we start him over Bulger???

Wow i knew someone would talk out the side of their neck about Troy Smith and that horrible line he was playing behind. He will be the number two Qb on this team get used to him. Mark Bulger looked horrible too. The play calling for the guy with the personnel that was in the game was bad as well. Some of you guys should stop starting Topics because it is obvious you are just haters. Mark bulger with all that experience that half of yall were bragging about looked like a rookie. Check down throws never impress anyone. Where are my negative rep points.....lmao

I knew this thread was gonna upset edreedfromtheu.

I agree with the OP though and actually posted about it in the Flacco thread. Troy Smith just isn't cut out for the NFL. There's a reason he's been the back-up for Kyle Boller, then Steve McNair, and now Joe Flacco.
