Droid Does

23 posts in this topic

I thought it would be cool to start up a thread about how awesome the Droid phones are and different Applications to download or recommend.

I still haven't decided which Droid I want, whether it be the Incredible or the Samsung Fascinate that comes out later this month.

But I will share some cool Apps.

Rombuddy and emulators like NESoid will keep you entertained forever! It's $2.00 for the rom application and the emulators are free. With the purchase of the Rombuddy you have access to hundreds of games for no additional charges.

Anyone else have any favorite apps? Or what they like about their Droid? Or what droid they are looking forward to getting?

Also, of course there is the NFL MOBILE app if you have Verizon. You can actually stream NFLN and some sunday/thursday night games and also get radio feed of local teams.

EDIT:-1 rep? Guess that person must have an iphone! Well the joke is on you, try holding it on the left side. DROPPPPED CALLL!!!!!!!!

Just got the Evo about a month and a half ago. Just got updated with Froyo (Android 2.0) last week. I'm in love with android. Not only that but I was already Google branded before I got the Evo so an Android made sense.

I just downloaded the football game "Backbreakers" for .99 cents about an hour ago. The game is pretty sick on the big screen.

WOW Apps:
Google Sky Map - This amazes everybody and its free
Google Googles

I also recommend ADW.Launcher if you are going with anything other than the stock launcher. So many more options.

Apps I swear by:
Radiotime - Listen to Ravens coverage where ever I am
FeedR - Rss reader to get my updates on twitter feads, fantasy football feeds, and other feeds.
DolphinHD Browser - Much better than stock , plus you can download a purple skin!
Directv Sunday Ticket - Can watch football game, anywhere.
Fantasy Guru - Manages Yahoo fantasy teams

I also have Nesoid to play all the sweet games from my childhood. Battletoads, Paperboy, Super Mario Bros, Excitebike, California Games, etc, etc, etc...

What sort of features are you looking for? Do you want a large screen? I take it you are on Verizon and wouldn't want to change carriers?

The Incredible is a good phone, its an HTC, the same as the EVO I have. The HTC Sense UI is very cool and usable. It also has the super amoled screen (which is the item which is causing backorders).

Samsung has a history of build quality issues. But I do hear good things about the Epic. I haven't heard much about the Fascinate yet.

I'm sure you can't go wrong with the Droid 2. Or if I was on verizon, the Droid X. Once you go large screen, you can never go back.

Yeah, I'm really leaning towards the Incredible since their will be an update for 720 p hd recording and flash enabled sites. The Droid X is nice but im not big on Motorolas. The apps though are so much cooler on Droids than Iphones.

Yeah HTC sort of botched the 720p video recording on both the Incredible and Evo initially. The Froyo update seemed to help.

iPhone are status symbols. Android phones are for people that want to do more with their phones. Android just isn't rows and rows of apps. You can install widgets which make your home pages extremely customizable.

I give two things to the iPhone. Gaming apps are so much better on the iPhone. Android has a bit of catching up to do. Also video recording and playback is also much better.

Also another cool app that is very valuable is PDAnet, it allows you to tether your phone's data connection. What that means is, you can use your phone's data connection to surf the internet on your laptop.

Despite what you might hear, you do not need to root your phone in order to tether. There is a free version of the Pdanet app and it guides you through the step by step setup.

No more paying for hotel internet. Just hook up your phone and your set to go. I'm currently on Sprint's 4G network which makes the connection pretty fast. It's a very useful app and feature of android phones.

Okay, so.. I was looking into either the Iphone or the Droid for when my contract with sprint expires. (January) Then I learned that the Iphone WILL(like 80% sure) be on the Verizon network come january.

So that right there takes out my biggest concern of if I was going to have to use AT&T or not. But it puts be in a bigger dilemma because now I'm virtually at an impasse (unless what I heard today was true where the plans on verizon will be like the ones for AT&T where the internet etc will be limited, then I'd have to go with Droid)

I know this is gonna be pretty bias.. but what do ya'll suggest and why

I can be unbiased. But I am an android user and personally prefer it over an iPhone.

So do you want to leave Sprint? They do have the Evo which is part of the droid family. It currently runs Froyo 2.0. Plus you get the 4G network speeds all at the Unlimited 69.99 plan (Sprint actually charges an additional 10 dollars on EVo phones only because of the 4G, but it is still cheaper than Verizon)

Second question, What do you want out of your phone? Do you want that status symbol which has excellent gaming and video recording capabilities (iPhone)? Or would you prefer a fully customizable phone, that is sort of like a mini-computer (Droid family)?

well, Sprint recently screwed my family over... and we've been with them for about if not over 10 years.. and refused to budge on anything regarded a new (even basic) phone after one of ours got stolen

I'm not sure, I like gaming.. but the mini computer concept is pretty intriguing

but like I said.. if it turns out I can only have a limited amount of internet on the Iphone..... Hello droid

I have the INCRED. its a good phone, battery life is a little bit less then I expected but a lot of time I 'm in my Datacenter which gets HORRIBLE reception so that really hurts the battery especially when I'm surfing the net...

I like the CardioTrainer ap, its good for tracking your distance and calories burned and what not.

Whats the deal with ths FroYo thing? can you explain more, PU?

Froyo is the new android operating system 2.2. Currently your Incredible (and most droid phones are running Android 2.1)

Some of the upgrades includes the ability to move applications to your SIM Card. Very useful if you ever have to do a hard reset or you are switching droid phones. You won't have to worry about losing your data.

The biggest enhancement is the addition of flash playback in-browser. Which is noted as a major trump against the iPhone inability to play flash.

Enhanced Video recording and playback.

Some phones that didn't have the ability to tether before Froyo - now will get the opportunity. (Carriers for the most part are still turning a blind eye to this).

Better system speed (supposedly) and slightly different look to the phone. With some new options added in here and there.

There aren't any mind-blowing changes but the upgrade does make your phone better. The real ground-shaker will be when Android 3.0 comes out. I expect that the Incredible Froyo upgrade will available very soon for you. Because HTC's other big phone the EVO already has it. And Verizon's Droid 2 is coming stock with it.

FYI: Each Android Operating system is giving a name. Google orders its names by desserts in alphabetical order. In this case Froyo is short for Frozen Yogurt. Android 3.0 is already in process as well and is code named "Gingerbread"

Important note about NFL Mobile for Verizon, the free live streaming from NFL Network will be deactivated as of September and will be moved over to Verizon's Mobile TV subscription tier.

I think I'm going to wait for the Samsung Captivate to hit Verizon before making my decision. There is too many Pro's and Con's about each one, I can't make up my mind.

The Incredible is awesome but it doesn't have a mount or docking station and I don't like the actual phone part of it compared to that of the X or the 2.

I think you mean the Samsung Fascinate. The Captivate is AT&T. Both phones are part of the Samsung Galaxy S series.

You might have to wait a little while because Verizon really wants to pimp the Droid 2 and the X. They do not want the Fascinate to steal their feature phone's thunder.

The Samsung Galaxy S series phones are pretty sweet. Love the OLED screens. If you want to test a brother of the Fascinate you can go over to a Sprint Store and play around with the Samsung Epic. The Epic is supposedly the better of the four Galaxy S phones and it price tag shows it. Sprint is retailing it right now with a 2 year contract at $249.

So I expect Verizon to retail it between $199 and $249.

I'm still stuck with my 2+ year enV 2. I love this thing. But you have no room to talk.
