[Blogs] ‘Surprised’ If Ravens Don’t Trade For CB

PLEASE NOTE: The opinions, analysis and/or speculation expressed on BaltimoreRavens.com represent those of individual authors, and unless quoted or clearly labeled as such, do not represent the opinions or policies of the Baltimore Ravens’ organization, front office staff, coaches and executives. Authors’ views are formulated independently from any inside knowledge and/or conversations with Ravens officials, including the coaches and scouts, unless otherwise noted.

The Ravens have been hit hard at the cornerback position in training camp, and ESPN reporter Adam Schefter thinks that will prompt the team to trade for a corner before the regular season begins.

“They’re going to have to make a trade for a cornerback, and I think the team will be active in searching for a cornerback,” Schefter told BaltimoreRavens.com.  ”As the preseason goes on, they’ll keep close tabs on other teams and what they need.”

It’s been rough in Baltimore.

Domonique Foxworth went down before the first full-team training camp practice with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Lardarius Webb is still recovering from a similar injury.

And even though Fabian Washington is still working back into playing shape since a knee injury ended his 2009 campaign early, Chris Carr and K.J. Gerard have missed practice time with undisclosed injuries.  And, rookie free agent Prince Miller was attending to the birth of his daughter on Sunday.

Cary Williams left Monday’s practice briefly, but returned while Gerard participated on a limited basis.

That left the Ravens with Washington, Williams, Travis Fisher, Doug Dutch and Chris Hawkins as the only fully-healthy corners.

“I’d be surprised if the season opened up and the Ravens had the cornerbacks on their roster then that they do today,” Schefter noted.  ”I think this team still has another move at the cornerback position in it.”

Schefter pointed to the Ravens’ surplus of running backs as potential trade bait.

“A team like Denver loses a running back. Well, this team has a lot of running backs,” he continued.  ”Maybe you call Denver and say, ‘Hey, we’ll trade you a running back for a cornerback.’ Things like that that could happen, you don’t know when or where the trade will happen.”

Schefter declined to offer any names he thought would interest the Ravens.

...or they could send Parmalee to the Broncos for Parrish Cox. Cox is untested in the NFL, but he shows a lot of promise as a rookie.

I like the idea of gettin Revis. I doubt it could happen but consider they traded for a cb, drafted one in the first, and Revis is holding out...they need oline send gather and next years 2nd for him Rex is crazy enough to gamble and he would love to prove he doesn't need him

At this point a solid O-line is more important than bringing in a CB, especially with our improved pass rush. Webb will be back and Washington is hungry. We have a plethora of talent at LB we could use as bait.

get gaither the HECK outta baltimore please, im sick of this lazy/fragile (rear-end) always missing practice, plenty of teams need a LT and gaither is a prototype LT if he would just work, lets send him away for a corner

<Mod note: Please refrain from using profanity>

Revis would be too much money! We still need to sign Ngata to a long term deal. I'm sure we will get something done but im not betting on seeing a house hold name coming to Baltimore and I doubt we trade McGahee.Gaither is a possibility for teams like Buffalo, Seattle and even the Cowgirls.

1) Love it or Hate it, chances are Gaither isn't going anywhere. He's been given the label of lazy and now injury prone so who would really give a good offer. I personally think he's fine and is just playing his cards all wrong in trying to force management/coaches hand. 2) No way would Oakland give up Nnamdi or NY give up Revis. And even if they did I'm not sure it would be a good overall investment given Ngata needs to be signed and before you know it there will be some other hole we'll need to plug. I say build up who we have and only take an offer if one is sensible and not a reach. You might not like him, but Frank Walker is still out there and knows the defense so we aren't in panic mode just yet folks. 3) If a trade does take place don't be surprised to see Parmalee, Barnes, Gooden, or Talavou's names surface. And remember we're still holding 2 kickers so who knows if someone will jump for one before we have to let one go. Crazier things have happened. #GoRavens

I hadn\'t really thought the cb issue was serious until walt harris was placed on the IR. Anyways, I want to keep both gaither and mcgahee. If gaither leaves, our o line has little depth and the reserves are too much worse than the starters. Mcgahee will and should be used more this season and if ray rice gets injured- who else do we go to

Good point kevin773....Don't know if it will actually happen but that's the type of deal that we will surely benefit from. Cox showed plenty of promise...Good thinking!

I believe there is a reason Walker is still a free agent, but at this point I wouldn't mind having him back. I think he has probably learned from his mistakes.

err.... yeah the broncos need a running back, but who are we gonna get back at corner? they won't give up champ bailey, andre goodman is solid but he's 31, thats the end of the list. People who keep crying for nnamdi and revis, please stop, it's genuinely irritating there is absolutely no chance of us getting either of those guys. One, it'd take a WHOLE LOT more than Gaither to get either of them, second the money doesn't play out well. I really wish there was a way we could keep Gaither and McGahee on the roster and make a move, I don't see why we don't hold another CB tryout for guys like ken lucas and fred smoot, decent players who could at least fill in until webb is healthy

why not 1-Mckinney Hale and Cousins for Champ Bailey......2- Ellerbe or T-Good and a 3rd for Bailey...Champ is in the last year of his contract and the broncos have been drafting corners!! or there is always Buffalo who have mckelvin(not likely) mcgee youboutty florence and r.corner and they desperateely need oline and could probably use mckinney for their new 3-4 or even a draft pick ... we don`t need namndi or revis nor would we be able to afford them!! just 2 experienced guys!!we have the pass rush now all we need is some guys that can cover for 4 seconds or less!!

protect flaco: thanks. i try i try. lol
and for those trying to send a RB to Denver. Let me remind you that they are on our schedule October 10th at M&T. If we get scorched by someone we traded I'd be soooooo ticked off. I would only trade with a seasonal opponent if I was desperate or the deal was just too good to pass up. #JustSayin'

irish the broncos don't need any of those 3 positions in the first situation you gave, plus 3 backups is not even close to what we'd have to deal to get champ, 2nd same thing, they dont need ilb help badly enough to give away champ for such a low price - he may be in the last year of his deal but they're gonna pay up, cuz goodman is 31 cox is an unproven 5th rounder and alphonso smith has been a bust to this point - mckelvin was hurt last year last thing we need is another injury prone corner, however i agree with the rest of your post. I think one realistic trade possibility could be Gaither for terrence mcgee, though i'd like to see gaither stay mcgee is a good proven physical corner who doesnt get the media coverage he deserves

smoot and c-mac should be checked out agin as well but i truly see buffalo as the best option!! maybe even troy could go there!!
actually a great point we could potentially unload troy and some other guys (maybe demetrius as he might not make the roster, maybe one of our ILBs gooden or phillips) that would keep us from having to deal gaither or mcgahee or something really important to our team while still getting is a qualiter corner for basically guys we'd have to cut anyways that could start on a team like the bills

Irish Train- surely you jest. We are thin as it is on O-line. No way I'd give up any three players for Champ (or 2 for that matter). We only need to get through probably 3 games waiting for Washington, Webb, Carr, Reed to be full strength. Zib will impress, as will Hamlin. Willams will be off suspension for game 3, and hopefully one of the other players will step up in the meantime. Our pass rush and offense should sustain us through the initial storm. No need to panic folks. And if somehow ALL that fails...don't worry I'll suit up myself and play.

@BoominRaven- I totally agree with everything you said. It would be awesome if we could have a trade obtaining the corner we want and not implicating gaither or mcgahee. Fred Smoot and Ken Lucas are seasoned veterans who I'd at least be comfortable with. If we decide to trade anybody, look for us to trade future draft picks or guys like gooden, parmele, talavou, or even guys like demetrius williams or mark clayton. Keep Ellerbe though- he's on the rise.

Also RE: IrishTrain's suggestion, those players you listed are right now our future at those positions, and Champ is at the end of his career. Why trade your future away for maybe 2 good years at one cornerback spot?

yeah ammaj i wouldnt be comfortable dealing ellerbe or barnes, but when you look at guys like demetrius williams, troy smith, tavares gooden, look at the depth we have at WR (crazy i know), DT, DE, and ILB, and you\'ll see guys that could start elsewhere that could potentially solve our problem since after we cut em they\'ll probably sign and start with another team anyways, why not profit from it
