Harbaugh Chews Out Defense

27 posts in this topic

The Ravens 1st team defense was getting ran all over by Curtis Steele and the 2nd team offense. Harbaugh had some choice words for the team and called over Mt. Cody and Mckinney.

Should we have any worries about this?

Since the article mentions Mckinney, I dont think it was the first team completely, but still.

There are days that the offense plays better than the defense, and there are days that the defense plays better than the offense. Personally I love to see a coach yell at his team. Harbaugh has the respect of this team and when he gets pissed, people know about it. I love to see this.

There is obviously going to be bumps in the road, but now that Washington is back, that should help our first defense. The players will learn. And the fact that both sides are so good, they will both get better

I don't feel it's anything to worry about. It's best everyone make mistakes and learn from them now than during regular season.

On a lesser note, I wonder if Curtis Steele's emergence will spell the end for Matt Lawrence.

One thing people may not know was today was an "over 30" day meaning players over 30 didn't have to practice. I heard Ray didn't practice on the radio and I'm sure Pryce and Gregg weren't there either.

It's normal for those harsh words jumping out from a guy who loves this team so much that even in practice you shouldn't make mistakes that cause other #2 offense team to score. It's just competitive. Of course, our major key players like Lewis and others were absent so #2 offense took the advantage.

However, without those key players, they should at least do a little better. In the end, I'm not worry about it. At least we made mistakes in practice which will be emphasized and readjusted before the season starts.

I want to see our guys getting yelled at on either side of the ball every once in awhile. I want players pulled aside and told what they did wrong. I want to see a private huddle on the side away from the rest of the team, with no word on what was said thereafter.

It shows that the coaching staff cares and that the players are being held accountable. Too many "atta-boy's" and pats on the back create a culture of passiveness and complacency. This team cannot afford to be passive or complacent if they are to compete for a Super Bowl. No team is Super Bowl-ready in the offseason and paper champions are meaningless. No team is perfect, and to have no one get chastised, the implication is made that perfection is already attained. There will be mistakes made and there should be mistakes made at this point in the year.

That said, all of this is moot if none of it translates onto the field during a real game. But it's a step in the right direction for a ballclub that needs to keep the intensity up all year long.

Not to mention the HUMIDITY has been rough the last few days. The big boys are getting tired.

Well if McKinney and Cody are in doesn't that NOT make it our first string defense....?

Or was Ngata and Redding/Pryce in too?

Either way I love the John Gruden coaching style of belittling and embarssing players. They act like divas (not in this case or not in this team really, just a generalization) and you put them in their place. It also lights a fire under their butts for the next play.

So Franny, when are you running for office? Just kidding man! Really, I enjoy reading your posts. They're concise and to the point as should be. But, if you do run, let me know. You can swing a vote out of me!

Its a coaches job/right/responsibility/duty/need/burden to yell at/coddle/teach/mentor/lead/guide players. Relax, he's our coach, not our guidance councilor. Let him yell I say!

I have absolutely no problem with Harbaugh getting after the defense. If they aren't getting the job done of course it's permissible to light a fire under their <do not try to circumvent the profanity filter> and get them playing at the Super-Bowl caliber level that the nation expects. I understand that veterans such as Ray Lewis and Gregg weren't present, but I like how Harbaugh is making it clear that the defense can't miss a beat even without these players. Injuries will be sustained throughout the year and the young guns must be ready to seamlessly step in and keep our defense fierce.

harbaugh is a rah rah love the team kinda guy....

obviously he probably got mad a miscue of fundamentals. Someone will always be stronger than you and if they beat you...so be it! but if ya not approaching the game with the basic fundamentals there is no excuse. Getting out-muscled is one thing...getting out-fundamentaled is another.

Any good coach lets his team have it when their play is not up to standard. Good on Harbs for going at the D for not performing the way they should.
