Cornerback Situation

63 posts in this topic

What do you guys think is ozzie gonna make a trade for a corner. Is this new guy dutch just a camp body. i personally think we should package a pick with mcgahee for a good corner and let mcclain get the goal line carries to make him happier and i think he would do better at it and just get another fb or have ngata be fb on goalline. i think we will do ok but i dont think our corners could handle a team like the colts or packers that have a lot of wr threats not to mention bengals got ocho t.o bryant greshiam caldwell and shipley.

Yes, its safe to say Dutch is a camp body. I think the coaches are confident in the secondary that we have. If they weren't, I think they would have made a bigger move, than Dutch. Once Webb comes back from injury, our secondary can survive, as long as we do get pressure.

Although, I do like your idea of packaging Mcgahee and a pick for a better corner. If we get a good enough deal, I'd take it. Is there anyone you had in mind? Only concern is, Rice may get too fatigued. I'm not sure if Parmele or Lawrence are capable of doing what McGahee does. McClain is a good option, though I like him to be used as a blocker more.

Idk about him, he's over the hill, declining, and he gets beat too much. I'd prefer someone younger. He's more of a stop gap solution.

No, that would not work. Aso is worth a ton more than that. Also, I'm pretty sure they have their RB situation figured out. Maybe just maybe McGahee and a first, but not a second.

I'm not. Ozzie's too good with his picks to get rid of a first rounder. Also, Aso's got a HUGE contract.

Yeah, most of the juniors came out in the draft.../sarcasm
There's still plenty of juniors left. the new senior class will have talent. Who knows? We'll leave this to Ozzie.

I don't think trading McGahee is a good idea at all. As of now, we have one of the most dangerous running attacks in the NFL, and I expect Cam Cameron to take advantage of our RB's different strengths even more than he did last year. Losing McGahee would take a dimension away from our offense, which is undoubtedly the strength of our team this year. We don't want to diminish what could be an elite offense.

Fabian is back. Webb will be back soon. We are fine. I wish Reed would get healthy, i dont want him to start on PUP.

Also, I dunno why Ozzie landed Doug Dutch, a Practice Squader when he sent beck to DC. I wasn't expecting to get a starter or anything but thought we could at least get someone that played a down in the NFL. We don't need another project.

Ozzie is brilliant. He got a camp body that "you never know" in exchange for someone that was going to be cut in a few weeks.

That's just basic strategy...the Redskins are thinking the exact same thing.

You guys need to realize that if we do get a big name corner we will have to sacrifice someone because of the cap space they will take.

And besides, ball games are won in the trenches, not in the secondary. Our secondary is good enough to manage, and may be even better than last year if you include the new pass rush.

Look at last year's Super Bowl teams, the Colts had a terrible corner situation (Powers is OK but Lacey is decent at best) and the Saints were decent at the position without including injuries.
Not to mention the Colts have a phenomenal D-Line (especially in passing situations) and the Saints have one of the best O-Lines as well as a pretty strong D-line in Will Smith and Sedreck Ellis.

The runners up were the Vikings (who have a steller D-line and not very good corners) and the Jets (who were probably the only contender other than the Pack to have an elite corner group, but still had one of football's best O-lines and Kris Jenkins patroling the trenches).

After that, you have us (who were obviously a team that was strong in the trenches), the Chargers (Great D-Line and pretty great pass blocking O-line, pretty good corners as well but not elite), and the Cowboys (Old O-line but still solid when Adams was getting flagged and Jay Ratliff with Ware coming off the edge was scary, good but not great corners).

Another playoff teams like the Pats are not strong at corner but with Wilfork leading the DL and Mankins on O, obvioiusly made in the trenches.

Lets look at the corner based defenses in the league:

Oakland Raiders,
Cincinatti Bengals,
Denver Broncos,
Buffalo Bills,
Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
Cleveland Browns,
New York Jets

There may be a couple more, but its pretty debateable. So besides the Bengals and and the Jets which one of those teams look like real contenders? And a lot of us, including myself, think both of these teams are severely overrated.

My point being, championships are won in the trenches, and a cornerback won't give us a Super Bowl.

Um, I did understand that <no personal attacks>

I was merely stating that we should of at least went for Ramzee Robinson, not a WR who was converted to play CB.

If Ed Reed is a healthy Ed Reed then our Safeties can make up in the backfield for our cornerback deficiency...
I have said this once and I will say this again:
Ed Reed and Dawan Landry are one of the most underrated FS, SS combo's in the NFL...

That's interesting. I think anyone next to Ed Reed will succeed due to his tutelage. Dawan isn't his brother but strives with the talent around him. Look at Jimmy Leonhard! Great for us but didn't do anything in Buffalo.

I would like to see Zibby and Ruki bring on some strong competition with Landry.

Bingo. Just like how any linebacker will look good next to Ray Lewis.

Examples: Bart Scott, Adalius Thomas, Jarrett Johnson.

Well, we don't know how JJ would be outside of Baltimore but, if history holds, he'll follow the same path as a Hartwell, Sharper, etc.

Coincidently, I still haven't forgiven Demps for throwing that block-in-the-back on Reed's big return against the Jets in '04, that play would have been even more spectacular.

29 isn't over the hill. He had the 2nd most INTs in his career last Season, with 9, so he's obviously not declining. He only gets beat when he gambles. He's still one of the best CBs in the game. I would love to see Asante in purple, but chances of it happening aren't too high.

Man!!! Watching that pisses me off so much!!! Worst part was the fact that the call was questionable. He used his hands a bit which turned the Jet player around, but it wasn't exactly from behind. CRAP!!!

He games a lot though and doesn't have any interest in tackling either.

Yeah, I remember Billick chewing out the ref for that one. It was a questionable one. Maybe Ed can actually return an INT for a TD when we play the Jets this time around.
