I think this was a just a "We need to bring in CBs just so that we can practice" moves. We really do not need 4 QBs on the roster. Dutch is right down the road and can be in camp tomorrow morning for practice.

What were you guys expected we ship Beck off for a starting CB? Or even a 2nd, 3rd fourth string CB?
Hopefully that is what it is, but why would we just pick up someone?

To be honest, I was expecting maybe a nickelback because I had assumed Beck was packaged with a draft pick. But, I can see the team still making another move for a mid-range CB -- just not one meant to be an immediate starter.

Both for depth and as a training camp body. As I stated earlier, you can never have too many cornerbacks and offensive linemen. Injuries hit those positions like crazy around the league, especially as winter approaches.

Expectation get a little too high around here. The word trade is mentioned and everybody gets depressed it isn't a huge star. While in the meanwhile we are shifting our rosters to fill our needs in training camp.

Yep Dutch just looks like a body in camp at this point. Surprised we couldn't get a little more than that for Beck, who has at least started NFL games at the most important position. Ah well.

His Michigan Days

Dutch attended The University of Michigan from 2004-2008. He started out his collegiate football career as a wide receiver wearing the number 81. He redshirted his freshman year. During his sophomore year he saw limited time as a reserve wide receiver and punt returner, catching 4 passes for 34 yards and returning 2 punts for 9 yards. Before his senior season he converted to cornerback and switched to number 35. He saw limited time on special teams and recorded one tackle. Dutch was again a reserve defensive back and special teamer during his final year of eligibility in 2008.

sos basically a kid with virtually limited experience playing onthe field, well I guess we wait and see how he pans out.
Wow interesting. Well if this is the case, then sounds like he still has a lot to learn.

I'm not going to say he is great but hopefully he can impress somebody. Its a long shot, but it wouldn't be the most surprising thing if this kid worked out. Even if he is a solid corner, maybe nickel corner, it would surpass any of our expectations.

No, I expected us to make a sensible deal and get a pick even if it was 7th round in the draft or get a decent player who actually played a little in college. Heck, we could've waited for Dutch to be released if we wanted him. If you can't make it in a small league hurting for players, then you can't make it in the NFL. Like I said, they wanted Frank Walker, and we let him go without much remorse.

Because the names that are out there you would have to call their agents, strike a deal, then wait for them to travel to camp.

This way the contract is already done, the guy is right down the road. He can be practicing by tomorrow morning with no agents involved.

What I don't get is if we just needed a camp body, there has to be some undrafted rookies left we could sign. We would never get a lot back for Beck but if we waited until camp was closer to finished we may have gotten more for Beck if another teams backup QB went down. Beck was a former 2nd round pick after all.

They are possibly working on a deal with Frank Walker's agent. But this takes time.

Whereas Dutch can be here tomorrow morning. Even by this afternoon! This is the purpose of this trade. We need OL and CBs who can practice immediately while we work on a better long-term solution meanwhile.

Most NFL fans have been conditioned to believe that trades are only completed for top or mid-range names, primarily due to how the media presents everything in the league on a large scale. These trades and transactions involving little-known players are rarely publicized widely, so fans often don't know about them until it happens with their own team.

Beck has ZERO trade value. The Ravens were probably deciding on cutting him anyways. They pulled the trigger to get somebody who's contract is probably small and already worked out.

If somebody's QB goes down in TC. They will probably be contacting us for Smith first.

What did we expect to get for Beck tho really? A third string (possible second string QB)for a number 1 corner?

Incredibly, Frank may have leverage right now. The Colts are supposedly interested in him.

I don't understand how people think that Beck had any trade value in the first place? If nothing was done here, then he probably would've been a Roster casualty.

That's the problem. All free agent CB's have leverage with us right now. So working out a deal with any free agents will take longer than expected for the mere fact that we don't want to get hosed. The same goes for any possible bigger trades.

In this case we skip past all that and get this guy in training camp tomorrow to practice. I know I sound like a broken record on this point.

True. We'll see if Ozzie goes with a FA or makes a bigger trade. I'm hoping for the latter but honestly, wouldn't be opposed to Frank being brought back.

This trade is awesome for the simple fact that DOUG DUTCH is real man's name! And when he laterals to Ed Reed on interception returns... everyone can yell PASS, THE DUTCH!
