Question On When To Take A QB In A Draft

8 posts in this topic

When does it become acceptable to draft a QB?? Should you always fill up your runningbacks and recieving spots even with the risk of losing out on the top half of the QB's, or should you take one in the third?? I'm in a 6 team league, and I have been having a dilemma about that one for a while. I also have 3 flex spots in addition to the regular spots. I always thought that you should take your other position spots, except Defense, Kicker, and TE first; but I have been doing several mock drafts on Yahoo with 8 teams where I attempt to this very thing and it never works out like I think it should. I always wind up with some bad Qb options.

It all depends on your strategy.

But for me, there are many serviceable QBs going later in drafts. You can get good value from Ryan, Kolb, Flacco, Henne and McNabb just to name a few.

The thing you have to note is that the difference in point production from the top QB to the middle of the pack QB is not as great as the top RB compared to the middle of the pack RB.

My ideal situation is to load up on RBs and WRs, get a middle of the pack servicable QB. Now if someone like Rodgers, Brees or Manning happen to fall in a draft, by all means you should think about drafting them. Just don't reach.

In what rounds are those three QB's a good value pick? I think around round 4 or 5, I start looking at my QB options. If I see one I like, I usually get him.

Depending on how many teams are in your league. But in a standard 12 team league:

Round 6 you can get a decent QB. Like Kolb, Ryan maybe even Cutler. You can get these guys later than that sometimes. That'll give you a chance to pick up 3 RB's, 2 WRs a TE then get a serviceable QB.

Round 4 or 5 there are still good RBs and WRs on the board. Remember it's good to have great depth especially in the RB position. You can use these guys later to trade for a QB or something.

It really depends since you are in a 6 team league. Normally for a 10 team league you can get Rodgers or Brees pretty early like first or early second. Which isn't bad if you can't get Andre Johnson or Turner. But then you could wait until the 4th or 5th to get Romo, Schaub, Rivers. And they are just a small step down from Rodgers and Brees.

But worst comes to worst, wait until the late rounds, and invest 3 picks on qbs. I would try to get Flacco, Kolb, and Big Ben. Then your set on one of them being solid for you.

That's what is nice about this draft is you can draft a middle of the round QB and still get a great backup QB in the 3rd to last round (Defense 2nd to last, kicker last). Henne, Rothlisberger, sometimes McNabb, Jason Campbell are all still there sometimes.

I love that. In our draft, I got Romo who will be very good, and Kevin Kolb. Barring injury, I'm set in the qb position all year. I can even play Kolb if Romo has a tough matchup. The draft this year is so deep with qbs. And if you jump on the right ones you can be solid.

But the thing is, once one person starts grabbing qbs then the rest are going to go. So once Brees goes, so does Manning and Rodgers. Once Schaub goes, so does Romo and Rivers. So just be ready for that to happen in the draft.

I read a pretty interesting article in SI about this topic... I'm willing to take a QB in the 2nd round, but only if it's Rogers or Brees... I'll take Manning in the 3rd, but if I dont get one of those three, I'll usually try and get a QB in round 5 or 6 (Brady, Schaub, Rivers)
