Shannon Sharpe Vs Todd Heap

33 posts in this topic

I think Todd Heap has proven to be a threat at TE for the Bmore ravens.
I think he is as good as Sharpe if you compare him. We have not had a TE that came even close Heap in pulling down big pass and meshing through crazy tackling...

Not really sure where you're going with this....Heap is not Shannon Sharpe, at all!

Who is Todd Heam? Do you mean Heap?

He mentions Heap in the body of the post, but its a pretty pointless post anyway.....

what I'm getting at is this the Flacco to Heap is going to be the major turn around point for us.
The reason is teams are going to write a game plan against our deep wide receiver corp and thus leave good old 1 handed catch Todd Heap wide open...

Heap should be able to take advantage of the attention the other players will get but what does that have to do with Sharpe and why is the top titled "Shannon Sharpe vs. Todd Heap" if that isn't the intended discussion point?

What I don't understand is how is this even a typo? I mean the letter "m" is pretty far away from the letter "p" on the keyboard.

All I can say is Todd Heap is the man. He has put his body on the line with all the crappy QB's we've had. He was pretty much a safety blanket for Boller. Heap would make all the tough catches in the middle and would get blindsided by a LB a second later. He always stuck in there. I'm pretty sure if Sharpe took enough of those hits, he'd be moaning.

Please let me start by saying I mean no disrespect, I really do want to contribute to your thread, I just don't know if I understand what we're supposed to reply. But I'll do my best.

It's a little bit difficult to compare these two players and come up with an answer to who's better, because they played the position differently. Sharpe was an undersized, receiving TE who created mismatches with his speed over LB's and strength over DB's. Heap is a more traditional TE with a mixture of good blocking and good pass catching ability. Heap isn't exactly a stud in either category, but is definitely above average in both. His motor, in my opinion, and ability to stay on the field every play of every game is what makes him as great as he is. However, Sharpe WAS a stud at receiving (2nd best TE in receptions, yards, and TDs all-time) and was an under-rated blocker (definitely better than the Wittens and Gates' of today). Sharpe's blocking may not have been directly responsible, but he did contribute to Denver's great running attack of the late 90's and lent his services in blocking for Jamal here in Baltimore.

Now if you were just comparing the two players overall, I would go with Sharpe for the reasons given, but you would be entitled to make a case for Heap being a more "complete" TE. But since you had to add in that "we have not had another TE that comes close to Heap in pulling down the big pass" I'm gonna have to just straight up disagree. Not only did Sharpe bring down the "big pass" he made them during the "big games." During our Superbowl run, Sharpe hauled in huge receptions in the 2nd quarter of all 3 AFC playoff games. A 58-yd TD against the Broncos, a 56-yd reception that set up the game-tying TD against the Titans, and then the monster 96-yd go ahead TD grab against the Raiders. So no, I would have to completely disagree that Heap is the only TE we've had that can catch the "big pass." Sharpe made the big catches even when he was the only real receiving threat on the field, AND against the best in the league during the biggest games in our franchises short history.

To your last point, which I would like to give my input on but don't know if I am able to do so... Heap might be much better than Sharpe at "meshing through crazy tackling," or he may not... but since I don't really know what "meshing through tackles" means, I'll just let you have that one.

Cheers!

I'd have to go with Sharpe, but Todd Heam is very underrated IMO. Not many people know much about his stellar abilities. He's so lightning quick we don't even see him on the field.

After the catch is made and 3 guys trying to tackle Heap he still gets the extra yard, now do you know what I'm talking about by "meshing through crazy tackling."

I think Todd Heam's performance is admirable. He's a dedicated hard worker, pushing all that trash down from the stands after the game into one big (heap). Shannon couldn't compare.

Just messing around!

The major difference between Sharpe and Heam is that Heam seems to have an uncanny ability to get absolutely obliterated by the defense whenever he makes a key catch.

If you want to call him anything it should be "Todd at the helm," not Todd Heam.

Nope, I think Todd Heap works best for most. They're just messing with you due to the "fat finger" on the key board (even though the "m" and "p" are not close to each other) and the overall direction/non-direction of this post.

Well, my wifes water just broke....off to have a kid!!

Congratulations brother! Add one more to the flock...

And my prayers go out to you, your wife, and your new child that the whole process goes smoothly without any complications. Congrats once again and the best wishes to you and your family.

@Ravenmore, thanks for the meshing clarification. I agree that Heap is a hard-nosed guy and has a knack for hauling in the grab even when taking a huge hit.

I REALLY can't beleive this got started by a veteran poster or whatever. Wow there is no way that you can compare Todd Heap to the best tight end maybe to ever play the game are you kidding me. Todd is just average really i mean he has great moments but for the most part he's just average. There are at least 10 tight ends in the league better than him. When Shannon was playing i couldn't think of a time there was 5 better.

Lewis & Rice are the "go-to" guys on their respective side of the ball.

However, I think with the additions to the passing attack along the sidelines & two young rooks backing him up -- I don't see Heap getting as many touches, but being more productive when he does get the ball.

My "MVP" vote is more of a "MIP" (Most Improved Player) vote.
[/quote]

Although, as you can see, I agree with this statement -- Heap is still no Shannon Sharpe.

People have a point because in the 2000 superbowl run Sharpe was the only guy that was a threat in our passing attack. I didn't recall seeing anyone being a real go to go for us back then.
