Ravens safety Ed Reed said he expects to start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform List during an interview with 105.7 The Fan on Tuesday.

If Reed is right, he would miss at least the first six games of the season. He wouldn’t be eligible to play until October 24 against the Buffalo Bills, one week before the Ravens’ bye.

“I’m going to be on the PUP list for a minute,” Reed said. “And I’m not going to let them take me off like they took me off last time.”

The Ravens’ first six regular season games mark perhaps the team’s toughest stretch on the schedule. They play all three AFC North opponents, including the Steelers and Bengals on the road. Baltimore faces three teams that made the playoffs last season (Jets, Bengals, Patriots) at their stadiums.

“Whether I’m there or not it’s going to be challenging,” Reed said. “If that’ the case – which it’s really leaning that way more than anything – hopefully we weather the storm. I think we will, we’re a good enough team and have great players around, so we can get through those games and be able to make a run in late December and January.”

Reed was placed on the PUP list at the start of last year’s training camp due to a nerve impingement in his neck. He came off in time for the start of the regular season.

This year, Reed’s offseason hip surgery has left him rehabbing with a week until training camp begins. The All-Pro safety said he’s still at about 35 percent, the same diagnosis he gave nearly a month ago.

The nine-year veteran said he has done some more agility rehabilitation, but nothing “too strenuous.” Reed still has soreness in the hip.

“The way this business is, and dealing with the things I’ve just been through in the past two weeks with my organization, I’m not coming back till I’m well and ready,” Reed said. “I don’t care what anybody says, I don’t care what anybody says about me. I know what I can do when it comes to football. … I’m going to take my time with this and make sure I’m more than ready.”

When it comes to the Ravens’ fate without him, Reed feels the team can survive.

The Ravens return third-year free safety Tom Zbikowski and signed former Pro Bowler Ken Hamlin as insurance. The two will compete in training camp for the starting spot if Reed can’t play.

“With Ken coming in, it adds depth to the DBs position,” Reed said. “We need guys in that area. Zibby is definitely proven. I think Zibby is a player, knows how to play the game, understands the defense and will be in there.”

Time for Zibbi to step up and Hamlin, they can get the job done no one is ED REED but I think Zibbi can fill in nice and he did so last year. Just in case Ozzie needs to have the Raiders on speed dial for Nomdi O just in case! GO RAVENS.

This is scary... I hope he gets as well as he can and what kinds of things have been going on between him and the organization? Is he upset with something? I hope not. If somebody deserves to be treated right amongst players it is Reed and I am sure nobody disagrees with me.
As for Zibby, he is definitely proven and can hold the fort down in some combination with Hamlin, till Reed returns for the stretch run.
Go Ravens!

Ed Reed is a phenomenal player and a game changer but I would rather him take off the time, dare I say it, even the season to ensure his healthy return to the game. I have enough faith in the rest of the team and in Ed's backups to win games. This isn't the team of old where we use to pray for a pick-6 just to get points on the board.

@bigjim, No need to say "dare I say." I totally agree. I've always supported taking as much time as needed if it means a couple more healthy seasons. I'd like to see him play at least as long as someone like Darren Sharper if healthy. Somebodies probably pushin for an earlier comeback from the sound of it and he has experienced what happens from that ideology last year. I believe he has the right to say what he has said. Aside from Lewis and Ogden who has given more to the organization? I'm confident with Zibby and Hamlin for the first couple of games because I've also said before that outside of Palmer & Brady there aren't too many legit QB/passing attck threats in the first couple games.

You heard it from the man himself, Hamlin is "added depth" meaning behind Zibby. If the master himself believes his protege is ready then all you doubters should just sit quietly and have faith.

Wow. He sounds like he's upset with the way the FO has been treating his injurys now and in the past. I wonder what that all about.

Get well soon, Ed.

Well with Reed out the line up our secondary immedeatly goes from concern to major weekness. Zibby will probably win the job and is a good player, but he's not the Hall of Fame ballhawk we have in #20. Just hope this does not turn out like the Samari Rolle situation last year. Get well soon Ed! :)

Yep, I agree. What's up with that? Hope there is no distractions or issue's. Either way, Zibby proved last year that he can handle the position and with Hamlin as the backup, we should be alright until Ed comes back.

I think I agree with the concensus, Ed needs to take the time he needs to heal and come back at or near 100%. If he feels he is not ready, then at least MENTALLY, he is not ready and should not come back in; he won't be "in the game" if he doesn't feel like he should be. I commend Ed for being honest and knowing when he's not ready. That said, it will hurt our first couple games, but hey, we need to be a TEAM and not rely so much on just a few key players. The Ravens need to step up and prove to us fans that even if one of our all stars is out with an injury or whatever, we can still win games.

I know we can do it!! We just have to step up and DO IT!!

I love that the fan base believes in Zibby.. When I came out in preseason last year with ym Authentic zibby jersey the average fans had no idea who Zibs was.. Well ive been talking about him sincewe drafted him in Harbs first draft behind Flacco And Rice.. Wow what a draft Arte franchise QB RB and Safety who got to learn under the best for 3 years, Reed knows Zibby will be fine out there and will help him and the Ravens get that ring this year...Zibby is the future...

Really I don't see a big problem cause other than the Pats and maybe the Bengels they are all running team and Zibby did great last year to fill in and if he has a rough spot Hamlin can fill in.

Landry had a great season following a very scary one we have way more depth and a lot less pass interference potential this year at Cb and our offense will score more points then most offenses out there. We have one of the deepest pass rushing specialists in the league with a lot of them coming into their prime...that being said if we improve in every position after the last couple of years performances i think we will really show that we have the best front office/coaching staff/players in the world. Long live the Ravens

This is part of an article from the Baltimore Sun: Reed clarified that he didn't ask the Ravens for a new contract this year. But he did request one last year. "The word I got was: 'We're comfortable with where we're at,'" Reed said. "Yes, you would be comfortable with the plays that I'm making on the field and paying me what you're paying me." Reed continued to express dissatisfaction with his current contract, which has three years remaining. "There are six, seven players in front of me [financially] at my position that I honestly wouldn't let hold my jock, and I don't even wear one," Reed said. He also doesn't think a safety should be paid less than a quarterback.

As much as I like Reed I don't really care when he comes back as long as he comes back healthy. And to be honest it might earn our underrated secondary some credit if they do well for a little stretch without him. Besides I thought Zib did great last year and Hamlin is a former pro bowler. Im not putting Reed down. I mean hes the best at what he does, but when it comes down to it I don't think him being on the field changes our chances of winning or losing that much.

Everyone says Zibby is no Ed Reed but with all do respect thats yet to be seen. What we saw of Zibby last year in just the few games he played was darn good. Even logged a couple picks right?

To me this is just even more reason to be stoked about this upcoming season. For all we know he COULD be the next Ed Reed. Just to know Ed's gonna be there coaching and mentoring this guy is another big plus. We all know Ed's gonna be a coach one day anyways so this does not make us have a "weak" secondary.

We good! (Extra)Coach Reed on the sidelines telling his unit what he sees. Zibby know what to expect already and communicate good with Reed. If Hamlin do his thing and don't miss a beat, then Reed will have the cushion to get back to 110% and bring his specialist style of play back to the field when the hammer is heavy.

With all due respect to REED cause i think he is one of if not the best to play Safety; but he takes a lot of risks - lots of times they pay off and sometimes they don't - case in point - against Indy, he just the quick slant route and Washington got burnt to the outside corner for a TD.

I think Reed had a lot more to do with the way our secondary played towards the end of the season by what he was able to see on the sideline and his ability to "coach" what needed to be done. There was a huge improvement once he started watching from the sidelines, so if he has to do that again for the first 6 wks i don't see how that would hurt us one bit...

We are good - Ed needs to mend so he can come back 110% - back to his former self and speed ont he field. He never got there last year. This is why the FO went out and got us the much needed help.

This is fine and I think what everyone expected anyways. The last thing we need is Ed coming back too early and playing hurt for an entire year like he did last year, and what is the point of that if he can't play like his normal self. If he can get back into game shape, week 7 or week 9 are reasonable returns and he will be ready to dominate like the Ed Reed of old.

Ed sounds angry. Did the front office ask him why he waited so long to have the hip fixed. I know he's the greatest and we think he's a Saint, but the question needs asking.

I love Ed Reed but he needs to cool down. We have a chance to do something special this year. ED Reed new he needed to get the surgery when the season was over and didn't he say he was retiring. ED REED I have much love and you are the best safety in the league but to complain about your contract the way that you are is not the ED REED that we know and love. If you go to ESPN .Com you can read the artical about how the Ravens aren't showing him any love. In Ozzie we trust and Ozzie will not give Reed another deal becuse of multile injuries and every other year wanting to retire. I want to remember Reed the Ball Hauk making some of the most amazing play's that I have ever seen but not the ED REED that can't make up his mind if he wants to play and get his first ring not the one who is becomming a distraction going into the season a season that can be super and I hope ED REED decides before it is to late that he want's to play. Behind Lewis Reed is 1a he is on the down side and to think Ozzie is going to redue his deal with no NFL deal in place is not going to happen maybe restructure but if he is going to be on the PUP for six weeks not counting how many after is not going to happen. I'M with you Ravens fan's I love REED he is the man but I don't want to see him go out like this. Get well soon ED REED winning the SuperBoul will be worth more then redoing your contract!!!!
