1st Round Rookies - Discussions Here

85 posts in this topic

Ok I know I started a thread about the 1st round rookies but this is different I figured I would start this thread and we could use it as the one thread to discuss and complain about the over paid rookies. I read the Rams began contracts talks with Bradford on Friday, and now according to PFT the Cowboys and Patriots are also on trying to get their first round picks under contract.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/07/19/cowboys-begin-contract-talks-with-dez-bryant/
David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Cowboys have opened contract negotiations with rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant. Bryant was the No. 24 overall pick in April's draft. So far, no players selected in the top 32 have signed, and just one of the top 64 is under contract.

"We won't have as much to go on," stated Cowboys executive V.P. Stephen Jones after the conclusion of June minicamps. "We usually have a lot more contracts to go off of. That will make it more challenging."
The Patriots have also been busy and they seem closer getting Devin McCourty under contract, with only the signing bonus keeping him from being the 1st first round pick signed.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/07/19/option-bonus-holding-up-patriots-mccourty-talks/
Albert Breer of the Boston Globe reports that the Patriots have been in contract talks with unsigned first-round pick Devin McCourty "on a daily basis for more than two weeks now." According to Breer, the holdup between Simms and the Pats is the placement of McCourty's option bonus.
So it seems that just maybe 2 guys drafted much later than Bradford will sign before Bradford does, Dez Bryant I can understand and certainly McCourty getting a deal done is also makes sense but I was thinking Bulaga or Denver would have had Tebow under his contract by now.

I'm not sure if it's the latest ever that no first round pick has been signed but it's true that nobody has signed just yet.

The Cowboys STOLE Dez Bryant from us. STOLE!
And how they did it was just wrong. I said many bad words at the tv when that occured. But the good news is instead of only hearing about how our cornerback position is so weak all the time, if we didn't have the draft class we had, we would have heard about a lot more weaknesses than just cornerback. And that would be annoying.

W4Z beat me to it so I guess I'll just post my thoughts. Thanks W4Z!

Finally... the 1st First Round Rookie is signed.... and his name is not Sam Bradford which is quite interesting to me. 5 Years for $11.8 Million, though I do question that he is given $8.5 Million of that in Guaranteed Money since that is practicality almost all his money. Not too bad that's around what Percy Harvin got for being the 22nd overall pick last year correct?

Those who had Dez Bryant in the holdout pool just lost lol. I do find it funny how Eugene Parker who represented Michael Crabtree last year, ended up being the last pick to sign last year and now this year he turns a complete 360 and has the first 1st round Draft Pick signed this year with Dez Bryant.

Wow, Dallas only has 1 more draft pick left to sign and that is LB Sean Lee. They get him signed, Dallas will be the first team with all their rookies signed.

HA! I beat you to it JO_75! :P lolz

I bet Anthony Davis is next to be signed. 49ers are committed to getting him signed.

Then McCourty will be 3rd and then

I bet kyle Wilson is the 4th to sign. With Revis contract issues and knowing how Jets spend money, I think Wilson is next.

lol, I was playing Madden and I had PFT up and I refreshed the page and saw that Bryant had signed and I checked this thread and saw nothing, so I tried to hurry up post what PFT had, but by the time I posted that I saw you had posted it so I just edited to my thoughts.

Not sure about Anthony Davis, but maybe Mike Iupati. McCourty I agree with him being 3rd, and Kyle Wilson, I'm going to disagree because I think the Jets are going to want to get Revis a new contract and get that over with before they sign Wilson, and I certainly could see Wilson signed but only after Revis gets done, probably even after Mangold gets his contract.

I think it could come down to McCourty, Dan Williams, Ryan Matthews, Rolando McClain or Sam Bradford.

I bet Tebow takes the least amount of money out of all 1st Rd rookies.

He is all about pride, honor, respect, and religion. I dont think big money matters to him since he is a "Team Player" :P

I bet one of the next to go is Jahvid Best (Ndamukong will come later).

Detroit obviously really wanted the guy, because they moved up to get him.

Not to mention they look like they are goin the right direction, and without too much talent signing Best is one of their top priorities.

After that it has to be Kareem Jackson.... the Texans NEED him for their secondary and if he doesnt shine they are out of the playoff race.

Wow.. well congrats to Jerry Jones for not having a single holdout this season and having everybody in camp on time. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact he has on the team in his rookie year, Dallas moved u 4 spots in the draft to get him so obviously they saw something in him and was afraid he wasn't going to be there 4 spots later when they were on the clock.

I just gotta wonder with Bryant under contract, and alot of people saying he could hold out but now he signed, which rookie now could be the Holdout this year? Sam Bradford, Russell Okung, will the Bengals have the same issues they had with Andre Smith happen this year with Jermaine Gresham?

You know I think Jaguars rookie, Tyson Alualu or whatever his name is. I think he will holdout, why? He was taken very early and he may want the money that better rookies DE's like JPP or Derrick morgan will be getting and Tyson might nto get that kind of money.

Yeah I could see Alualu holding out, I mean the Jags had issues with Eugene Monroe last year, so it's possible. Tyson is certainly someone who will be overpaid in his deal because he'll be a 2nd-3rd round talent getting paid 1st round money. I still can't believe the Jags took him at 10, the Jags could have traded down all the way to 20 or 32 and still would have been able to get him, and cheaper too.

I can see Sam Bradford holding out, but not as badly as Russell was in 2007, but just holding out due to the fact it is unknown if he will start this year and that if he does start, depending on what he does he can get more money(making the playoffs, X amount of wins, etc) so certainly all signs could lead to a Bradford holdout.

I will always remember the 2010 Draft as the draft where the Ravens fleeced the Broncos.

Even if both teams end up benefitting from their respective ends of the deal, the value of a Tim Tebow in that draft was not worth a 1st rounder and no NFL GM after Denver would readily admit to comfortably (keyphrase: comfortably) taking him so high.

Speaking of Denver and Tim Tebow...

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/07/27/broncos-tebow-making-progress/
According to Mile Klis of the Denver Post, the Broncos and agent Jimmy Sexton are negotiating a five-year deal with an expected value of $12 million, including $8 million guaranteed. Klis says it would be a surprise if Tebow isn't signed before the first full-squad practice on Sunday.

Make The Patriots the second team to get a 1st round rookie under contract. Devin McCourty has agreed to terms on his rookie contract.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/07/28/patriots-devin-mccourty-agree-to-terms/
The New England Patriots have signed their first-round draft pick.

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that Devin McCourty and the Patriots have agreed to a five-year contract.
McCourty's Deal is for 5 Years $13.2 Million with $7.825 Million Guaranteed.

Darn it! You beat me this time Jo! lolz
lol now we are 1-1. Now it seems like we are finally seeing contracts being done with 1st round rookies, and it's all the bottom of the draft. Dez Bryant(24th Pick); McCourty(27th Pick) and by Sunday Denver should have their Franchise QB Tim Tebow(25th Pick) under contract. So I wonder by Sunday if Tebow is under contract, the 24th, 25th, and 27th pick will be signed, I wonder if the Cardinals will be next after Tebow or before Tebow gets signed and sign Dan Williams(26th) to a contract.

I also saw The Rams have come to an agreement with their second round pick Roger Saffold, so I wonder if Bradford gets done by the end of the week or early next week.

Uh-Oh, Denver we have a problem, I think we found this year's Crabtree. Tim Tebow wants more money than Dez Bryant and his agent feels he should be paid more than Dez because Tim is a QB.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/07/28/report-tim-tebow-wants-more-than-dez-bryant/
Tebow apparently wants more money than Bryant, and that's why he wasn't there when the Broncos' rookies reported to training camp today.

Ed Werder of ESPN reported on NFL Live that the holdup on Tebow's contract is the request from agent Jimmy Sexton that a premium be paid to Tebow because he's a quarterback. Sexton wants Tebow to get a bigger signing bonus, higher base salaries and more money overall than Bryant is getting from the Cowboys.
Quite interesting how his agent is the one holding things up.... I guess he is sucking up every penny he can out of the Broncos since he'll have no control over his clients next year when there is a rookie salary cap.

Either Clayton or Schefter said reported that Bradford could be done as early as Friday.

Was it Crabtree's agent that had him holding out last year or just Crabtree himself? I only ask because it sounds like Tebow is being held out by Jimmy Sexton.
That's what it sounds like, I mean if you look at the article Sexton told the Broncos that Tebow should be paid more because he is a QB and deserves the QB Premium. I mean in the article it says "the holdup on Tebow's contract is the request from agent Jimmy Sexton that a premium be paid to Tebow because he's a quarterback. Sexton wants Tebow to get a bigger signing bonus, higher base salaries and more money overall"

So it definitely is his agent forcing Tebow to hold out, nowhere does it say Tebow wants more money, it's his agent saying that. Sounds like to me Jimmy is making sure he gets more money since next season he won't be in control of the salaries his clients can make since a rookie cap will be in place.

Bradford deal done by Friday? Interesting.... so that means in 2 days we'll be able to finally scream at our TV and computer "ROOKIE SALARY PLEASE!!!!" Also I should note that Suh and McCoy have said that they are waiting on Bradford to get a deal done before they sign, so after Bradford signs Friday or Monday next week Suh and McCoy should follow suit, and the rest of the league will do the same and we will have all 1st round rookies under contracts sooner than we know it.

Didn't Brady Quinn do the same thing as Tebow? It's not surprising at all, and I think he's right to ask for more money than a WR in a similar draft position. Not to mention the Broncos traded up to get him, meaning they really wanted him and will do what it takes to bring him in, so they lost some leverage there.
