Maybe Take A Te To Succeed Heap?

13 posts in this topic

Just thought I see what you guys thought abut us grabing a TE in this draft, someone who can take over for Heap in a few years when he's done here (whether through retirement or being released) sicne this years draft has a lot of talent at the TE position, but none of them or lock solid 1st rounders and will most likely fall to 2nd of further.

Personally I like Fred Davis out of USC, I've seen him play and he's a monster, never had injury porblems and is quick enough that LB can't always keep up with him and he's real good and fighting for the extra yards after the catch to make him a dangerous red zone weapon. At USC he sometime lined up as WR with his speed, but he's still a decent blocker when he's on the line too.

Just thought I'd see what everyone thought about this idea, but to be sure this is in no way signally the end of the Todd Heap here, just looking to take advantage of a good draft and many good TEs avalible this year.

We have Quinn Sypnewski (sp?) already.

I'd really like to sign on here and NOT see more threads about getting rid of Heap. Geez.

I am not saying to get rid of Heap at all just pointing out the good group of TEs in this draft as a chance to pick up a future successor for him and until then provide depth since Wilcox is getting older and Quinn is more of a blocker than a pass catching TE right now (though he could develop into one with traing and guidance under the TE coach and Todd).

It's possible we may draft a TE, but I really don't see it happening this year. Heap still has a pretty good amount of time left in the tank and I think Cameron is going to do for him what he did for Antonio Gates in San Diego, only making him better. As far as I know, Wilcox and Sypniewki are not going to be free agent coming up here and unless he was just signed for the remainder of the season, we'll till have Lee Vickers too, so I think we're ok on TEs this year, there are more pressing position needs in my opinion (mostly defensive back and offensive line positions, quarterback to a degree).

Davis does look like a pretty good TE though, if he' available later in the draft I wouldn't mind us picking him up.

I'd like to see us get a TE this year.

But more of a receiving tight end than a blocking tight end.

You rarely see a good 1-2 TE punch, and I've always been a fan of 2 tight end sets.

And also with todd heap's issues cover wouldnt hurt.

Nah, Think our back-up TE's are pretty solid. Spinewski & Wilcox. Both have room for improvement in the catching and blocking games, and are capable of doing just that.

i agree that Fred Davis is a beast and i think will go in the 2nd round maybe even late 1st. i don't see us using either pick on a TE.

we dont need another TE.. Chris Wilcox is a stud and by no means should we get rid of Heap.. it just sucked this year because Wilcox was hurt at the same time Heap was so he didnt have his chance to shine.. he would be a starter on alot of teams in the NFL.. he kind of reminds me of ben watson in new england

Pretty much gotta agree here. Both of these guys are good and with the right coaching both of these guys will improve. Cam Cameron is supposed to really excel at developing the TE position. Lee Vickers is also on the roster for now.

I'd prefer for the draft to be more geared towards depth at other positions than one that's already loaded.

Daniel Wilcox is a #2 TE capable of being a starter, and Quinn Sypniewski is picking up the game nicely, so whether or not Todd Heap comes back, I won't be too concerned. Lee Vickers looks to be the odd man out regardless, but he could be of use on the practice squad.

So realistically, I don't see TE being a targeted position, but I wouldn't necessarily be ANGRY if a sleeper is picked up in the later rounds.

I definitely wouldn't use a first-day pick on a TE, though.

this is the number 8 pick we're talking about here! this pick should be someone who steps in and contributes right away, not a successor years down the road.

I don't find it to be that deep.

Fred Davis, John Carlson, Dustin Keller, Martin Rucker. These are the good tight-ends.

Half of these guys are just WRs anyways.
