This Year's D-Line

I just read the article about the battle for making the roster spots on the defensive line. Wow we have some extreme talent there, and a beautiful mixture of youth and experience. But now the question, who will be the starters?

The way I see it I think Ngata will be back in his spot and won't have a rotation like some of the other positions on the line.
In the 3-4 I think Gregg and Mt. Cody will have a nice rotation, and in the 4-3 I think they would be the likely starters, and posibly McKinney would be thrown in, with the experience he has.
On the other side Pryce would most likely take the starting spot, with Kruger taking a few snaps.
As far as Arthur Jones is concerned, I think if there is still roster room he'll be signed for some depth.

I'm worried about Ngata's injury, he said a few weeks ago he's at around 75% and should be ready for camp but is it going to set him back? and if so, how much? if he can get his strength back he still has to rebuild the muscle memory and neurological pathways.

Honestly, I think we are too deep on our D-line, with 11 roster players vying for 3 starting spots. Some will be released and some will be relegated to the practice squad. It should be one heck of a competition during camp, though! Can't wait to see how it all plays out.

I definetly believe that a lot of people are sleeping on Redding. He's been hidden away on bad squads in Seattle & Detroit. I feel like he will be a very consistent piece to our d-line rotation.

I love our depth. Now I better see an extremely disruptive force. No excuses.

I see Redding as the starter with Ngata in a 4-3. Definitely on passing downs. But also on 1st and 2nd also because in today's league most teams can and will pass on any down. I don't like him as a 3-4 end though, the role he played in Seattle last year. It didn't suit him. His strength is his quickness of penetration and that is just far more suited to a 4-3 DT.

Seahawks ran a 4-3 last year with Redding playing strongside DE and not his usual UT, you also have to remember that Seattle's d-line doesn't compare to ours and that Redding is healthy for the first time in 4 years. He still plays a little high though.

We have a really stacked and DEEP defensive line. The thing that I have been worrying about is not Ngata(becauuse I believe he will be able to get back his strength and form) but Kruger and how he handles the weight. Other than that we have a stack load of guys that we can throw in all different kinds of situations. I would like to see Arthur Jones work his way up and get some playing time, he could be a great DE for us which would result in a big steal relying he can stay healthy. Pryce will get his playing time mostly in passing situations and a lot of the times he will be coming in fresh so he should be up to his old self and either get held or create some havoc. We're having a battle at NT between Gregg and Cody so we will see throughout the season how that goes and who ends up getting the time. Gregg was good throughout the year and actually got better as it went on, but Cody is such a big fella that if you stick him beside Ngata on run situations your going to clog a lot of lanes.

Ngata, Pryce, Kruger, Jones, Redding, Gregg, Cody, Mckinney, Talavou

I don't think it matters who the starters are on the DL. If you watch how mattison coached last year, he is going to stick to his rotation. A guy who starts might actually only be out there for a couple plays (e.g Pryce last year). I personally don't like the idea of a constant rotation, because typically our defense is full of players who get hot after making a couple plays, i think mattison is pulling guys off the field for cold players right when they could be making plays. I mean the best player on our team was Ngata and he was getting pulled off the field more than he has his entire career hence he had his worst statistical season yet. I know Ngata is the only guy we can label a starter but even he is going to be limited as long as mattison is dc.

I think we will be rank # 1 d line in the league. With guys like Brandon Jacobs who like to slug it into the Goal line. We will use Cody for those goal line situations and it will be like a fence and nobody is going to get by that fence.
