Greek Mythology

14 posts in this topic

Between god of war and watching percy jackson with the kids my interest as come back about Greek Mythology and the gods and all that stuff,
want to get a good source book that tells of the history and connections and all that but not sure what would be a good one.Internet sites give somewhat of a description but I'm afraid it won't be what I am looking for and bookstores are pretty much non exsistent in my area.(45 min-1 hr derive to get to one)
so if anyone could suggest a decent book about this I would appreciate it

Anything by Edith Hamilton. I have a couple of her books somewhere either at my parents or somewhere in my basement. She is the gold standard in school.

Stop living in a place that's so derivative.

If you want a more adult-themed Percy Jackson-esque story (only way cooler) I highly recommend American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

When I was in high school, we were told to buy "The Complete Encyclopedia of Greek Mythology" for our English class. Very insightful, very complete.

Absolutely love the story of Orestes.

Watch Clash of the titans (the original) and read the Odyssey.

Speaking of Greece, I was just basking in the greek island sun a month ago on my honeymoon. Soaking up some knowledge of greek gods as well.

Do you have a ipod touch or iphone, I know there is a free app called Greek Mythology.

Outstanding. I was about to recommend the book 8 inches away from my face and realized it was "Mythology", by Edith Hamilton.

The Sandman is the best series of comics I've ever read. Ever.

Damn.. I saw that thread late. Being a Greek American, most of my Greek mythology books are written in Greek. Although, I have heard that Edith Hamilton's books, as Moderator 2 said, are great to read and go deep into Greek mythology.

Be careful with the subject matter around kids too, Ancient Greece had a very... liberal view when it came to same sex relations.
