Reed Wants New Contract

43 posts in this topic

I am a huge Cowboys fan...sorry Ravens country. That said, Ed Reed has proven himself to be one of the best players in the NFL. I have a lot of respect for his abilities. He's good for the Ravens and for the NFL. He's the kind of player that will give his all. I think if he thinks he can get back on the field then the Ravens should do whatever they can to keep him as long as they can. I would love to have him on my team.
He'll make $6 million this year, which is not exactly small change. We're uncertain about his future and about the future of football.

Ed Reed when healthy deserves a big pay day, I can agree on. But and I say but because I keep hearing the team, himself is not sure how much if any he can play this year. How can you expect a team to give you more money garanteen or not at this time of his carear.

His carear, duh! What I think he meant was something along the lines of,

"How can Ed Reed expect the Ravens to restructure his contract when he, and the team, are unsure of how effectively, or how much, he will play in the upcoming season?"

I, personally, am of the opinion that the Ravens should re-do Ed's deal. He's been largely underpaid throughout his career, considering he has been the most dominant defensive back of this decade. He may only have a few years of his playing career left and he has literally given his body to this franchise. He deserves it.

Reed would not try to scam us, he deserves every penny he will get if we restructure his contract.

I personally think we should pay him a little more in his contract and add incentives.

You can't just have the "Pay the Man" type attitude! He is a great player and deserved his huge pay day when he signed his last contract, but this is a business and things like this must be handled carefully regardless of who the player is. After reading the article it made it seem as if Reed would play at the start of the season if given what he wants and if not he will continue to rehab. He also stated that he would play for at least one more year and to be honest one more year isn't enough to ask for more money. It makes it seem like he wants guaranteed money so he can hang it up. I guess when it comes down to it things can be taken out of context when written in an article so hopefully we will get the real picture of this situation soon.

The new article posted on this site about what Reed stated makes a little more sense than the one posted on ESPN.com. These articles can be so mis-leading sometimes but it seems the bottom line is that Reed wants to get healthy and prove that he can play a bit longer and then talk with the Ravens about another contract, but he will for sure play this year for the fans. Good news if you ask me and I love to hear players of Reed's caliber talking about doing it for the fans..sometimes we as the fan get thrown to the curb for the big money picture.

That certainly would be awesome, seeing as I plan on being at Heinz Field for the game.

Will this be your first time at Heinz field? Will you be going incognito or in full Ravens gear? We wish you well on your voyage representing the Ravens!

I agree Ed deserves a lot from the franchise and the fans and I've got to be missing some of the background information. From my distant perch across the bay it seems such a weird time to renegotiate. "Hi, I'm at 35% and might not be back until December... give me more money!"

Don't get me wrong, what Ed has done is Hall of Fame all the way and should be rewarded... Ed just has a lot better timing in judging balls in the air than judging when to push this kind of discussion. I assume he intends to play this season (what he can) and at least one more, right? Is he wanting another contract with more guaranteed money up front?

I just don't have enough information to make a judgment about what Ed really wants and what his status is physically or paradigm-wise. It's definitely an interesting situation. He said he won't press the Ravens for another conversation, but that's what you're doing when you make a public comment like this.

It's too complicated for me at 1:00 am.

It's that age old question of wether you pay someone for what they've done in the past.
I think it's more what you think he can contribute in the future... the answer to do you pay someone for what they've done in the past is a resounding no.

The Principle of Sunk Costs:

You cannot make future decisions based solely on things that happened in the past. (From a business standpoint)

When any player in any sport is given a new contract, isnt it based off what they have done and what you think they will do?
