Delaware Qb - Joe Flacco - Worth A Draft Pick?

57 posts in this topic

Now, I'll admit that I'm more than a bit biased when I say this, but I honestly believe that, given the shaky QB situation with the Ravens, the personnel crew would do well to give Delaware QB Joe Flacco a closer look.

Flacco has been heralded as one of the top 5 QB's in the draft, according to most national prognosticators, and has NFL-type size and great decision-making skills. In addition, he has a powerful arm and has tremendous pocket presence that only underscores his athleticism.

But, don't take MY word for it. Check out these clips:

It's certainly no coincidence that Flacco draws comparisons to Ben Roethlisberger, given his size and ability to keep plays alive.

Although I'm pushing for Troy Smith to succeed, it's certainly better to have TWO good, young QB's on the roster, than none at all. THAT'S the type of QB controversy I'd much rather see in Baltimore.

Best of all, Flacco is slated to go as early as the late-second round, and the Ravens could pick him up for a premium since he likely won't fall past the first day.

Definitley, he a big Rothleisberger like QB, who could end up a better QB than Ryan or Brohm. I think he's a much better choice than Woodson or any other running type quarterback.

This draft includes the ravens getting Flacco and would be the ideal draft for the ravens. It has us getting Ali Highsmtih from LSU, who could replace suggs as an OLB

From what I've read about the Senior Bowl, Flacco's stock rose enough I don't think he'll still be around that late in the draft.

I must admit I saw the name of the QB, and remembered where I saw the Blue Hens on this forum. At least you admit, you're a bit bias on the topic.

I actually saw the last game Flacco played, decent, good arm. What round do you think he will go , if at all?

See, the issue is, being an NFL prospect from Delaware almost SOUNDS like an oxymoron, because most "prospects" from UD never go as high as they're slated to go, or never get drafted, period.

QB Rich Gannon was the highest drafted player from the school, going in the 4th round to the Patriots (of all teams) before promptly being traded to the Vikings after New England envisioned converting him to defensive back.

After that, players came and went through the NFL, with the more notable ones being national championship-winning QB Andy Hall being drafted by the Eagles in the 6th round, only to leave for Arena Football; and TE Ben Patrick, who was slated to go in the 3rd-5th round, but dropped to the 7th round to the Arizona Cardinals, despite being ranked the 3rd-best TE in the draft.

The only other notable Blue Hen in the NFL is Mike Adams, former starting safety for the 49ers and now free safety for the Browns.

With that in mind, I WANT to say that Flacco will break the trend and go in the 2nd or 3rd round as slated, but will likely go in the 4th or 5th round like Troy Smith.

if we do grab a qb in the draft i want this guy! we would be STEAL in the late rounds. whoever gets this guy will be in great shape.

From all I've seen and read this guy could be a great pick as long as he doesn't rise to high and becomes overvalued for what he's been showing, but still he could be a good addition to the QB position here.

The draft doesnt have the Ravens getting flacco. It has carolina drafting him with pick 75.

Besides Flacco, there are some QBs i see in this mock draft going late that i think may be able to get the job done. Such as..

Pick #45 Andre Woodson KEN

Pick #99 John David Booty USC

Pick #122 Colt Brennan HAW

Pick #159 Dennis Dixon ORE

Pick #164 Erik Ainge TENN

Pick #195 Matt Flynn LSU

Theres something about Erik Ainge. I think he can be a very late steal in the draft if he does fall that far. Hes got the

NFL arm.

Yeah, I thought that about him.

to be honest, I am kind of surprised no one projected him to go second round, I've seen nothing but good things from him.

Yea, i figured he would be a second rounder easily too. And just as you said, i've seen nothing but good things come from him. He could be a steal if he does fall that far. Im against us drafting a quarterback this year, unless of course, it is a late round draft pick. We dont need to draft one early. Smith at least deserves a shot. I wouldnt mind an early quarterback drafted, but it isnt a necessity.

This is What the Ravens should do. First off With there Number 8th pick they should go after DT Cedric Ellis, and if they get him Trade Kelly Greg and maybe a draft pick in next season draft to a team for a second round draft pick in the 2008 draft. Then they go after Joe Flacco and with the other draft picked they traded for, get a Corner back. This for the ravens would be the ideal situation. GO RAVENS!!

Why trade Kelly Gregg when he's still playing at a high level and is still the team's most underrated weapon on defense?

Gregg may have a lot of trade value, but he's too much of a hard worker and has produced too well to let go like that.

Plus, it'd make no sense to get his replacement with a first-round pick, when Haloti Ngata is still on the roster, and is still benefitting from Gregg's tutelage.

Priority one is (arguably) still CB/QB.

Flacco is definitely my favorite QB coming into the draft this year an I would love to see the Ravens pick him up, he would be a solid pick in the first few rounds. As much as I like Steve McNair, he's no Brett Favre and hopefully he realizes this, so hopefully we'll go into next year with Kyle Boller, Troy Smith, and maybe Flacco. I would let the 3 of them battle it out in training camp and preseason but I would probably put Boller starting for the time being, Troy Smith as 2nd string for now, and Flacco playing the role Troy had in 07, giving him a little time as a rookie to start working on things in the NFL. I honestly think Flacco would be one of our best bets in the draft this year.

He will be a steal in later rounds. Brohm and Ryan will go WAY before then... I'd like to see this happen.

Well we saw what happened with Brady Quinn last year. You just never know.

I don't know, if we could snag him in a later round that would be good. I dont know but does anyone know if he played any good teams yet?

I watched Flacco maul the Navy secondary in Annapolis a few months ago -- that convinced me: if the Ravens are going to draft a QB in upper rounds, Flacco should be their target. If he falls to 3rd round, he would offer better value that Ryan, Brohm, Woodson, etc. I'm hoping to see the Ravens trade down from #8 to pick up an extra 2nd & 3rd to stock up -- including adding Flacco to the QB corps.

yeah i actually saw him play.. he's in the top tier of qb for the draft, but i dont know about the 8th overall pick.. it all depends what happens this offseason with the qb situation to know what will happen with the draft

Oh, I definitely wouldn't take him with the 8th overall pick. That's WAY TOO high for him, even if he DOES end up panning out in the NFL.

I mean, I guess, in a sense, I'd be ECSTATIC if I was able to say that Delaware was able to produce a top-10 draft pick. But, I'd also be extremely angry if Ozzie & Co. picked him up that early instead of a CB.

I'd rather get Flacco for a premium contract as a 2nd round or 3rd round (if the team can maneuver back into that round) pick.

I'd say Flacco is a project and should sit a year or so. He needs some attention from a good QB coach. He will probably be available in the later rounds because most teams are looking for impact players to make a contribution now even in the 3rd round. QBs are risky and often fall to the later rounds. I wouldn't look to get him but if he is there in round 4 or 5 I wouldn't mind if the Ravens decided to take him. QB is not one of my priorities. We have 3.

I'd much rather have Darren McFadden we have a freaking fullback in our backfield taking a lot of carries! LeRon who?! Our rushing game will be terrible this year!
