Walt Harris Signs With Ravens

32 posts in this topic

After signing Bulger yesterday, the Ravens have "agreed in principle" to a one year deal with Walt Harris now. They haven't said how much the contract is worth, but seems it's happening. Guess after turning down the Ravens, Harris either changed his mind, or we offered some more money. Guess Lucas is the odd man out, and he's the one I was hoping to see signed out of the three.

Ah, so it has? Good, good. I saw Schefter's tweet, then ate lunch and came back. It's amazing what can go down in 20 minutes. I thought Harris was the odd-man out in the three defensive backs they brought in for try-outs. Personally, his age and the extent of the injury he's coming off of would have put me off from signing him. But I guess he's shown that he can still play well enough for the Ravens to want him for some depth.

Well, our medical team had us pass up on Marlin Jackson (recently learned he got hurt again for the entire year, kudos to the Eagles). Hopefully this gives us quality depth.

Yeah, and I was actually giving a good look at Jackson (maybe it's because he's from my town). His injury prone history is why I wasn't sold on him, and seems my gut was right about him.

I like the signing, but I wish I had a better idea of what his physical abilities are at this point. Hes past his prime and coming off of major surgery, so I would expect a decline in his speed and cutting ability, no matter how well he has rehabbed. That is the part that scares me. On the other hand, he brings exceptional leadership qualities and experience to a very young and inexperienced secondary, which could prove to be very valuable. DEPTH is key.

I just hope that with a secondary operating on a rotational basis until the starters get back, the lack of continuity doesn't result in a decline in quality of play. Only time will tell.

I also hope that the signing means Ozzie and co. saw ability in him that made them think he was worth it, and not that they signed him just because they are desperate and worried and there are no other viable options left.

And that right there is my thinking: he won't be a Pro Bowler, but he has tons of experience to share with these young, up-and-coming corners who need a mentor to help bring them up.

Like I said on another thread, I actually like this signing more than the Fisher one.

Another good signing by the FO. I love this team!

The one positive about his injury is that it happened during the OTAs last Season, so his body had an entire year to heal, aside from his knee alone. I was always hopeful that we'd sign a veteran CB to serve as a coach on the field. Now we have an ex Pro-Bowler to mentor our young Corner Backs, an ex Pro-Bowler to serve as another mentor to our young Safeties and an ex Pro-Bowler to mentor our young QB. I'm sending Ozzie a gift basket.

The signing of Harris means that L. Webb will most likely be put on PUP for the first part of the season.
So our corners look like: Washington, Foxworth, Carr, Fisher, and now, Harris. When L. Webb is ready, I think he is eligible to be put back on the roster beginning with the Ravens' 7th game, Fisher or Harris could go.

I'm hoping Miller performs well enough returning punts and forces his way onto the team.

I think a seasoned Vet with one leg is an upgrade over what we had going into the playoffs last year. Somehow, we finished in the top 10 with our beat-up, penalty prone, chopped liver secondary... Somehow, I think we'l be better this year!

nobody seems to think William, Paschal or Gerard can play well enough to help the team. It's hard to judge guys without pads on, but i think once camp starts atleast one of these guys will shine. Just watching short highlight clips of OTA's i've seen Williams and Gerard lined up on Boldin, so that can only help guys like that.

None of the guys that have been signed Post draft are locks to make the team imo opion. Guys like Stallworth, Redding, and now Bulgers are locks, but all the guys that had to try out are not.

I just think the Ravens have set themselves up to have a tremendous amount of competetion during training camp at most positions.

I know injuries are a part of the game but it's incredible how many CBs have got hurt for this team since '07.

Williams, Gerard and definitely Paschal are all practice squad fodder with special teams upside at the most in my opinion. Just because we hear some good things about them in mini-camps doesn't mean they're ready to play zone/man coverage in a real NFL game.

Terrific signing, you can't argue with a veteran presence mentoring our young CB group especially since Foxworth and Carr were considered the veterans before Walt's signing. Let's hope Fabian doesn't lose a step and Foxworth plays in late-season form, with Walt at nickel. That's a pretty decent group of CBs right there!

Good Signing, this adds much needed depth at corner. It seemed like the injury bug hit the Corner position more than any other position and that resulted in being thin at Corner in the playoffs, now hopefully with who we have on the team and the addition of Fisher and now Harris, we'll have solid depth heading into the post season at corner for the first time under Harbs.

Now hopefully this stops the "We need a Corner" threads from popping up since we now have plenty of depth at corner.

And that's why I'm not crazy about this signing.

Walt missed an entire season after TEARING HIS ACL in organized team activities. I know were trying to add more depth to the CB position, but last I checked, we had two of our best CBs currently recovering from that same injury. How much sense does it really make if were trying to get better and healthier at the position to go out and sign a guy with the same injury that's plaguing the position right now?

Not to mention, he hasn't played in a competitive game in a year and a half. Same thing with Donte Stallworth, but at least he's healthy and was when we brought him in.

It isn't like CBs can't come back strong from ACL tears. One of the reasons San Fran didn't have to bring back Harris was because Shawntae Spencer played very well last season after tearing his ACL in '08.

The Ravens wouldn't have signed Walt if he didnt look good in the try-out. And him not playing a real game in a a while isn't an issue in my opinion considering his LONG career and wealth of experience.

I'll be honest, I think we've done a pretty damn good job addressing the CB position. Prince Miller, Ashton Hall, Travis Fisher and now Walt Harris. Not that these guys are going to be great, but they are new faces (at least for us), and who really knows what to expect from them. The only one of these that leaves me pondering a little bit is the Harris signing, like I said.

But as far as addressing the position, you can even go back to last year when we signed Foxworth and Carr and drafted Webb. I know this talk of needing a CB isn't going to stop or die down really, but before anyone else says we haven't addressed the position, we need to realize this.

Good points. For some people, unless you draft CB in the 1st round or sign a big-time FA everyone has heard of, you haven't addressed the position.

One thing though, Ashton Hall was cut.

Bennett is probably one of the most famous Raven to never wear a Ravens jersey or play a game for the team.
[/quote]

He would have to be 2nd to T.O. I can still remember the day i was sitting in my girl's house and it came across the bottom of the screen. Ravens trade for Terrell Owens. I had like 10 people call me. Then it seemed like as quick as it happen, it was undone.
