Well surprising move indeed! Well this move lends itself to some speculation with respect to either Flacco or Smith. With respect to Flacco: Either this is a move for Flacco not to get too complacent with the security of his job or he has an injury that would affect his play or perhaps the coaches are not entirely sure if he has the elite QB ability to take us all the way; all of which I hope are untrue of course. With respect to Smith: Harbs and management are secretly pissed at his request to move out of Baltimore or they really don't think he is a good back up as a pocket passer. Especially given the fact that we have accumulated numerous weapons on offense...
Now with regard to Bulger, think about how effective he was early in his career when he had potent passing weapons on offense. He has thrown for over 4000 yds when very few QBs threw for that much. With weapons he could be a very able QB in the coaches' opinion and also will bring much needed experience to the QB corps! Whatever the reasons are in OZ I trust!

I believe this was just done to replace Flacco baring an injury. Its pretty obvious that today's Bulger isn't going to replace a great QB that has even greater potential.

Didn't see this one coming...

We will (very) most likely not go into season with 4 QB's. So somebody will go. This is not some rookie tryout for minimum rate either, this is experience and a $3.8 investment.

As usual, (and smartly I might add), Ozzie plays his hand close to his chest until all the pieces are in place or moving on any deal. If I had to guess, I would say it's a Troy Smith trade to the Bills for picks or/and players that allows the $3.8 for Bulger to be justified.

But...its just a guess, the guys who know all will tell us in time.

GO RAVENS!

Ummm i'm sorry everyone this is excellent... Bulger yes has a ton of good stats etc. but whats more important is he can hit the deep middle of the field. And if I remember correctly, we have one of the most well rounded receiving cores in the league.

In regards to Flacco and his position, this is only a good thing. Competition and even mentoring are never bad things. I am now 100% sure if Flacco did get hurt with our Sick D, Bulger could at least manage the game. Even win it if we were down when Flacco got hurt.

p.s
I think someones leaving the castle at the QB position as well. It did piss the coaching staff off what he said. Sad to see him go if he does...

This most likely means Smith is gone.
He should of learned by what happened to C-mac.
If you want to go Harbaugh will grant that wish one way or another. Either by trade or release you won't be around long.
Don't be surprised if they bring in a RT.
Gaithers days are numbered too.

troy smith is a great qb he only has 2 starting games under his belt.Bulger is a great qb as well. I scratched my head on this because even though we are insuring positions safet, qb. we still need starting cb's. foxworth and washington and webb are good but they are still weak links on the starting line up of the ravens d. we are depending on players that arent even proven themselves. even tho troy was out of line making his trade request public. You have to understand why he's arguing. he was actually suppose to get the job until he got sick. preseason he was just as productive as flaaco and is a great talent but just has bad luck.but good contingency move but i wanna see whats up with cb cuz we are STACKED especially if reed comes back. but that is our achillies heel. too much pressure on cody and kindle to produce so much so early

This is a great move by the Ravens... They are saying that they have a legit chance at a super bowl this year and if something were to happen to Flacco they will have an ex-pro bowler waiting to fit into an amazingly talented offense.

Troy may be good but he is inexperienced with leading a group of stars into the play-offs. Same with Beck. Buldger has been there before he knows how to lead and win...

The money may be a little much but where else are you gonna find that resume for a back up qb???

They might keep 4 arms, since we do have a ton of weapons.. for training camp.. but for a superbowl run.. that wouldn't bee too plausible since reps are valued. I would say that Troy would be the odd man out.. John beck has more experience.. is more fluid.. taller.. more familiar with cam... and he wanted a trade... You are reasonably confident in beck and bulger if joe doesn't stay on the field.

Plus I think the Ozzie and the rest of the crew were'nt to happy with the "I'd crawl to Cleveland to play there" comment... I think they're say'n go ahead crawl to back up Delhomme for 4th place. We'll send you a picture of the ring you would have had...

I always liked Troy and really wanted to see what he could do as a starter, but after that comment I never really felt the same about him..

I haven't read through the comments yet but here's my opinion. Good move first off, a Veteran Back up to our young stud qb. This makes perfect sense, I'd much rather have a seasoned veteran take over late in the season if Joe can't go due to injury. 95 starts compared to a combined 6 starts, do you want the fate of a championship year in the hands of Beck or Smith? This is a superbowl contender move right here by the front office, they are basically going through any scenerio that could play out and covering their bases.

A couple of posts ago I mentioned a "scratching my head" button (like a facebook "like") that would would be clicked and a guy that just pops up with a puzzled look, scratching his head. When I drove to work and heard this on 105.7 the fan I definitely had that feeling, lol. However, I think it is more surprising just because everyone knows people "want" (not necessarily need w/ an 8th ranked pass D) more secondary help.

There can be alot of arguments about who stays, who goes, why this siging happened but I personally like to think that Bulger + Zorn = ensuring Flacco hits that three year breakout season to become elite. His experience/knowledge may be just as important as being a valauble backup and yes I do believe he is a valauble backup because I agree with the "He didn't have a good line or weapons" comments about Bulger. If Flacco went down, with our line and new weapons I can't see why Bulger wouldn't be successful or at least a much better "game manager" under pressure with his experience than Smith or Beck considering we are poised for the big run this year. I can see risking throwing Smith or Beck in the mix if rings weren't on the line but not now. It's not like we need to be pass heavy anyways w/ 3 pro bowl caliber backs.

This also indirectly affects us posters. We will now lose half of our comments because "a certain Flacco hater" won't have anything to say about taking a veteran over Flacco because now we have both...lol. Anyone who has been on here everyday knows exactly what I'm talking about. Can't believe he wasn''t on this one yet.

Way to go Oz! Another great signing! I'll take veteran leadership any day over crawling to Cleveland. I could just picture driving out I-70W and seeing this kid on his hands & knees along the roadside. He and Gaither could have a race out of town, LMAO!

I love the Ravens and know they always make great decisions regarding the draft and the free agent market, but I don't understand this one. I'm guessing Troy must be on his way out?

The Ravens agreed to terms with veteran quarterback Marc Bulger on a one-year contract Wednesday, pending a physical.

Last year, Bulger suffered a fractured leg in Week 11 and sat out the rest of the season.

Don't expect anyone to be cut until Bulger passes his physical, which I heard on the radio is scheduled next week.

This is a great move for the QB position. This will ensure that the team has an experienced backup for Joe if he goes down. Obviously they will not have four QB's on the roster for the first game against the Jets. So someone will go. Marc Bulger will be very effective with the Ravens offensive weapons. I think the Ravens had no choice last year but to play an injured Joe Flacco. Now they can breath a little easier with Marc Bulger waiting on the sidelines. He can go in there and play against any team in the NFL. Now Joe has an experienced veteran player and QB coach to continue to mature in the position. This will make Joe Flacco a better questerback. Great move Ozzie.

Ravens Fan Thick&Thin - you crack me up - "A certain Flacco hater..." I was amazed to see he had posted already calling for Bulger to be the starter, lol!

This move tells me one thing - the Ravens are gearing up for a SB push. I know that sounds silly to say given everything else we've done, but Bulger is a proven "insurance policy".

Flacco is "The Man" under center, and everyone knows that. But, should the nightmare scenario happen and Joe get injured and have to miss some time, could we really make a playoff push with Beck or Smith? Sure, we won a SB with Dilfer at the helm, but he was still a proven starter before he came to the Ravens.

While I'd like to think we will survive the season unscathed, its nice to know that if we decide to rest out QB heading into the playoffs, we won't be putting a "Curtis Painter" under center.

The Wizard of Oz strikes again!!!!

Honestly, I didn't see this coming although after giving it some quick thought, I like the move. I think Troy is the "Odd Man Out" but whichever one moves on, Good Luck to them and their future. Bulger had declined the past three years due to that terrible OL. I think he is better then what we have seen over those past three years. And I agree with some of the comments saying, With this move we are telling the league that we are committed to going to the Big Game. Watch Out! Now, let's bring in a veteran starting CB!!!!

Rumor was the Vikings were sniffing up the Bulger tree as well. I was shocked when I first heard, but upon reflection I like the move. If everything goes right, he will never see the field in the regular season anyway. It will be good to have a veteran presence at the position, and it will be good for Smith and Beck to duke it out for #3.

Something feels wrong, like we are filling holes that don't really exist. I get this feeling there is a trade waiting in the shadows.

Smith for a CB?

You better believe that if the Ravens get an offer for Troy Smith that cannot be refused he will be clearing out his locker. There is a lot of time before the game against the Jets. The Ravens are the talk of the league and there are a lot of experienced veterans that will not hesitate to come here. Using Troy Smith as a little bait is all business.

ESRaven - a wise observation indeed...Smith for CB may be in the works.

I don't think we're filling holes that aren't there, but I do think we are buying more "insurance" this season. Plus, Bulger has run a "High-Octane" offense in the past. Between him and Zorn, Joe only stands to gain knowledge.

As of now not only does Joe have the best weapons in the league, but now he has a Vet to bring out his full potential in the next coming season. With Zorn’s teachings and Bugler’s experience, He will exceed people’s expectations!

One more thing ...Now that we have 4 Qb’s, they should consider trading Troy and Mcgahee( Yes i said McGahee) for a proven (young) CB! Mcgahee is too expensive to be a back up. They should give the money and a long term contract to Rice. He truly deserves it!

The Ravens Empire will be Victorious!! We will win the Super Bowl baby!!!!

Having a proven veteren QB around will only help Flacco to develop even faster. Plus, if God forbid!! Joe goes down then we have a proven QB to step in without having to drastically change the offensive scheme. Bulger can still play at a high level if necessary!! I think a trade involving Smith and/or Gaither for some additional secondary help would be a great idea!!! Go Ravens 2010!!! In Ozzie We Trust!!!
