[Blogs] Ravens Agree To Terms With QB Bulger

I guess this means that they're trying to trade Troy Smith. Smith was a more than solid backup, he requested a trade so that he could be a starter somewhere. Unless Smith is traded, this move doesn't really make much sense.

I was surprised when I opened this but it is a good pick-up. Did you see the last 3 years and the beating this guy took. I can't believe he even would get behind that awful line. This means the Ravens really are thinking Superbowl this year! They want a proven back-up just in case for a few weeks or whatever. Bulger if healthy behind a good line with a few good receivers, well, just look at the results when the Rams were good. We are deep almost everywhere, incredible.

I mean, I think that Bulger can still be good. His numbers only went bad when all his receivers left (Holt, Bruce). Now that he has receivers, I believe that he can still be good. Honestly, I like Troy Smith, but he's only made two starts. If Flacco were to get wrecked and have to miss half the season, I would much rather have an ex-pro bowler in Bulger lead a playoff run than a promising but inexperienced QB. This is another signal that the Ravens are looking to go all the way this year. They're leaving nothing to chance, they want to make it even if Flacco goes down.

I feel comfortable about this move and plus u can never doubt Ozzie. But yeah this must mean bye John Beck because if it's only a 1 year deal why would they get rid of a good backup like Troy??But just can't wait for these upcoming days to see what happens.

Well, this gives us a solid back-up QB (no one should be saying Bulger isn't good, the guy can play, St. Louis just blows...) and it gives Troy the option to run the Wildcat with us.

Good pick-up!

Wow, must be more going on with Troy than we know.
I trust Ozzie so it must be a good move but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth that Troy now goes to 3rd on the list when he's been here with us, waiting patiently (Or maybe not so much).
Either way, it does look like we're thinking SB all the way!!!

This is HORRIBLE NEWS!!! My excitement over the upcoming season just dropped. Marc Bulger is an AWFULL, AWFUL quarterback along the lines of Kyle Boller!! This move stinks!

This is good cause we can trade troy if he wants to be traded so bad, and maybe get some picks or a player. I was very surprized but if Ozzie thinks it a good idea then i do to.

this is just a awkward move... im not mad about it, its kinda smart since troy is still a question mark and john beck is garbage, but it just seems so weird that we sign this guy, i honestly feel like he can still start, shoulda sent himself to buffalo or seattle or carolina or somethin

Bulger isn't awful he's pretty good, fantastic back-up in my opinion. His play fell off the last couple years but then again he was playing for the rams and they haven't had a stellar receiving corps in some time. I just watched the 2003 double OT game and he played a pretty good game in my opinion (minus the interceptions), plus he has a great touch. When he was doing well he had Bruce and Holt in their prime. Who has he had recently?

Besides a two time pro-bowl appearance for a QB ain't bad.

He might just have some good tips for Flacco too

Not a huge fan of Bulger at all. I still would like to see Smith get reps because he has the speed and the arm to be dangerous with the talent he is surrounded by this year. However, if the ravens do plan to get anything in return for Smith they should get rid of him while he is still young. Although I would not be against keeping him because there is always the chance of him getting injured (knock on wood)and I would like to see how the former heisman trophy winner would step up to the challenge with the fire power we have.

They're really planning a SuperBowl run this year. They would never have picked-up a veteran back-up if they weren't 100% sure of the team they have. Bulger has big game experience. It's a good insurance policy. Great move. I'm excited about this season man!

I'm not sure why some people don't like this move. Bulger brings a ton of experience to our QB position, and he was once a pretty good quarterback (when the Rams were...*gulp*...good). He's definitely more reliable than Troy Smith or John Beck and he'll help further Joe Flacoo's development...what's not to like about this move???

I read on another website that we spent 3.8 million to get this guy on a one year deal. We must be working out a trade for troy smith or this makes no sense. There is the slim posability that flacco has an injury noone knows about. That would be a nightmare, wouldn't it.

The veteran help to Flacco is fine, and all that, but 3.8 million dollar help? Come on. Unless Joe has a secret injury, i don't get it. Especially if Smith isn't going to be traded. Now we have 4 QBs, one of which is being payed almost four million dollars to ride the pine? That's unreal.

This is a huge shock, but its a good addition. Bulger is a solid backup to Flacco and may even help with Flacco's maturing.

I think it means Smith has either been traded or will be cut. Beck is more of a typical 3rd string QB who is a great investment for the future.

I agree this is a sign the Ravens are making a strong push to go all the way this year - way to go!

This also likely means they will not emphasize the Suggs package this year, but with all the offensive targets they have they probably don't need the Suggs package anyway.

Very Very Interesting !!!! I've never been a T Smith fan.. I don't believe he's a good pocket passer. More of a Vick style. Run and tricks.. pass option type. Not my kind of QB. Sorry to the T Smith fans. But he's not my type. So I'm guessing T Smith is on the chopping block. And guess we'll have to see what develops out of Beck. ?????? Very interesting.

wow are yall kidding me do i have to even argue that Troy Smith is a better QB at this point in their careers than Marl Bulger. This guy plays like he is hurt all the time. What a terrible pick up unless we are losing one of our guys Bulger can be the team captain of the practice squad......Oh and i love the negative rep points please waste them on me.

Oz, I don't understand this one, but as always, in Ozzie we trust.

On a side note, if the $3.8 mil figure is accurate, just think, Bulger will make more $ this year than Flacco and Rice combined... interesting.

How has Smith proven he is better than Bulger?

Well surprising move indeed! Well this move lends itself to some speculation with respect to either Flacco or Smith. With respect to Flacco: Either this is a move for Flacco not to get too complacent with the security of his job or he has an injury that would affect his play or perhaps the coaches are not entirely sure if he has the elite QB ability to take us all the way; all of which I hope are untrue of course. With respect to Smith: Harbs and management are secretly pissed at his request to move out of Baltimore or they really don't think he is a good back up as a pocket passer. Especially given the fact that we have accumulated numerous weapons on offense...
Now with regard to Bulger, think about how effective he was early in his career when he had potent passing weapons on offense. He has thrown for over 4000 yds when very few QBs threw for that much. With weapons he could be a very able QB in the coaches' opinion and also will bring much needed experience to the QB corps! Whatever the reasons are in OZ I trust!
