This should also put pressure on Flacco to preform because there is a proven veteran who can easily come in if he falters

I can't say that I agree. There are no plans to have Bulger even compete with Flacco for the number one job (I know that's not what you're saying), so I doubt Harbs would pull Flacco for Bulger just because he's struggling.

Secondly, I wouldn't exactly say "easily come in". Bulger isn't the player he used to be, so it wouldn't such an "easy" fill in for Bulger. Like I said before though, he's great depth though, and I look at it this way: On this Ravens team, he'd have more weapons than he's had on the Rams the past few years, and an solid offensive line to protect him (unlike his past few years with the Rams). His performance would probably be better, but not starter quality numbers.

Yeah, I think this is anything but something that will put pressure on Flacco. The pressure will be from #2 on down, not on the way up.

Troy...Cuz Bulger is all beat up and used goods.
I disagree I'd take experience and knowledge of the game over physical and athletic ability. Maybe not in all positions but QB for certain. Besides, if the O line improves this year like it's supposed to, Bulger should be fine.

But remember, this is if he takes even one snap.

Marc's probably thinking, "Man! if only I could've got a chance to play behind an awesome OL like this when I was a starter."

I can't complain about the pick-up. Lots of experience. I just hope he understands his role here in Baltimore and no distractions come from it.

This could be the end of the Troy Smith project.

Maybe it has been mentioned, but it's ironic that last year a Raven became a Ram and this year a Ram has become a Raven.

But the Rams got a young, great center. We got an old beat up Buick....errr Bulger.

Ahhhhh you were thinking Boller not Jason Brown. Duh!

Troy Smith was never a project. He was drafted to be a backup and he has lived that course. Odds are we'll cut him and keep Bulger/Beck.

I didn't mean to suggest he was a project player (despite what some people here may say), I meant more so that the Troy Smith era could be over. He has been a decent back-up despite the whole Twitter incident. Though personally I thought Boller was a better back-up. Boller always knew his place and did whatever was asked of him.

No worries, I agree entirely.

The one thing that always bothered me about Troy was he (for lack of a better analogy) looked like a crack-addict on the field. He was twitchy, scrambled out and to the right at any sign of a pass rush instead of working the pocket, he was jittery... it was uncomfortable watching him. It was almost as if he was trying to prove himself to the world instead of just relaxing and slowing the play down. If you watch highlights notice how twitchy he is. If anyone gets within 3 yards of him he twitches all over the field instead of letting his OL push the defender away.

That's pretty funny. I can't say I've noticed the twitching, I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Boller wasn't much better either. Boller always thought "Run Now!" instead of feeling the pocket.

God forbid that something happens to Flacco this year, but if it did, we can rest easy knowing that Bulger could step in and we probably wouldn't skip a beat.

The way I see it is, last year Cam started the year out with a few "Suggs packages". Once Flacco started getting banged up we really couldnt chance putting Smith on the field in one of those packages for fear of loosing our best second qb. Smith was definately our second best player at the qb position. Now with Bulger as a solid backup, we can crank the playbook wide open knowing that we have a capable qb backup. Bulgers stats and performances declined over the last few years but it was not all his fault. Look what he had to play with.
God forbid Flacco go down but if he did I strongly feel Bulger could step in and at least keep the wheels from falling off. We have the best offense he will ever have played for including those years when he was a probowler.
Not really knowing how this will pan out, here is what I would like to see.
1. Flacco starting----16 games injury free
2. Smith being our third string qb but used to the fullest extent in the Suggs packages!
3. Bulger 2nd string, Teaching, guiding, inspiring, removing all stress and pressure from Flaccos mind about "I Have To Or We Will Fail Mentality." Then in the worse case scenario jog out onto the field, help Flacco to the sideline due to his minor injury, and the jog back out onto the field and continue the *** whoopin Flacco already started.
This signing makes all the sense in the world to me. It just shows the determination and commitment to get to the final dance. Not sure what happens with beck though? hmmmmm.

Cam never(nor should he) uses the Suggs Package against good competition.

Like I said before, I'm hoping we don't see much of Troy next season.

I am in no way a fan favorite of Smith but he does bring a twisted dimension to that "Suggs Package". Cam is a fan of his trick plays. He likes nothing more than to completely fool the opposing defense. Not that it would be implimented all the time, but when the time is right WE will see it. I dont think Troy is all that as a Quarterback but he brings an extra element to the game that Beck cannot. This just makes my opinion lean more towards keeping Smith over Beck.

that extra element being whenever we need to line up and then call an instant time out due to us being more confused than the opposition......got it

What some people are failing to realize is that this season is uncapped - the Ravens aren't at a disadvantage for signing this guy.

I don't know man. Cam rarely ran the "Suggs Package" last season. The emergence of Rice and additions of Q, Stallworth and others make me believe me think Cam won't have to use Smith(if he's even still a Raven) at all.

We'll just have to wait and see.

I don't think the Suggs Package is anything more than a gimmick to start with but the more advanced the offense gets, and the more weapons that exist within the offense, the less likely things like the Suggs package will get any field time.

I agree. And notice during the 2008 season, when we used it more often, it was only put in place against bad teams.

That was my point about last year. Flacco being banged up we really couldnt do it. Now that we are healthy again. Having all these weapons is great. One would think you dont need to do trick plays. When would there be a better time to do it. No one would expect you to do it. Bam quick money. You are right though, Wait, Wait, Wait, and see. Tired of waiting...

Even with an element of surprise, why not just run a standard play with less risk? Better question, why not run a play the team practices more and has a higher chance of gaining positive yardage due to the familiarity?

The best offenses in the league rarely run trick plays, why should the Ravens? Is Troy Smith that explosive of an athlete?

I haven't read through the whole thread yet but I just wanted to say that I love this move. I like Troy and all but I'll take a good veteran back up over him any time. I look forward to seeing Bulger in pre-season but I hope that's the only time he plays this year.

In Typical Ravens fan fashion we throw a player under the bus because it looks like his days with us are numbered by a new signing.

Yes, lets bash troy smith now.

Classy guys, real classy.
