What if Troy is released?
That was my first thought, actually. I figured they were just going to let him go pursue his starter dreams.

I'd rather release Beck and keep Flacco, Bulger, and Smith. Those would be our best QBs.

Troy knows he isn't going to start this year so I don't see what's the point in him getting upset. He only has to deal with being benched for another year. Plus Ed_Reed20 said there's no reason he can't outperform Bulger in TC/Pre-Season. If he doesn't then that's on him.

My thoughts on this is: It's like a Ken Hamlin signing. Don't really care. It's good insurance.

If you get a desperate enough team.
see, thats the thing though......this is the NFL and a business. No team will get desperate enough to give away a future prospect/starter/draftee/bench man/practice squadder for a backup QB with the little experience that Smith offers

And they're just that, dreams. If a team thinks a guy has talent, they'll go after him. Didn't Seattle trade for Charlie Whitehurst even though he's barely played?

No one wants Troy. Even teams like the Bills don't want him.

Trade Troy!

Also think, would you rather have Troy Smith start a playoff game or Marc Bulger?
Troy has VERY LITTLE value, I'd be surprised to get a 6th round pick for him.

Troy must be pretty angry.

No reason he can't outplay Marc in training camp and pre-season.
Troy Smith, outplay Marc Bulger? Are you kidding? NO WAY is that EVER going to happen, even at the later stages of Bulgers career. Troy is a back-up QB. Bulger was a VERY successful starter in this league.

I never said it would happen. However, I don't see how you can say there's NO WAY it could happen considering Troy's time in this system and familiarity with the players.

Also, have you seen Bulger the past few years? He wasn't surrounded by much outside of Jackson but like Rotoworld said, he didn't seem interested either.

I think the Mods can get rid of the "Not yet confirmed" addition to my thread title. Seeing as now NFL.com is reporting it on their home page, along with like... 5 twitters, one being a retweet by the Ravens official twitter account.

It is also now confirmed on our own homepage.

Honestly, I'm not surprised by this. Although I'm not exactly sure Bulger is the best fit for our system, bringing a veteran QB in like Collins or Bulger was not a bad idea when you look at what I think is a lack of depth at the position. And I'll agree that Beck is probably out.

I wonder how loudly the "I want to be a Brown" comments rang in the F.O. when Bulger became available.

Troy Smith in reference to his desire to play for the Browns:

"There is no doubt about it. It has always been a childhood dream of mine. It's funny how we always talk about Cleveland. That's the first thing that comes to mind with anything I do whether I get a chance to come home and be a part of that organization or not. You know, I would love to get that chance if that opportunity comes up, but the political and right thing to say in this situation is that I would love to be anywhere that would give me a chance. But, without a doubt, there would be no second guessing in my mind if I could come back home and be a part of something that I love."

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a guy wanting to play in front of home town fans or for a team that might give him a chance to start. I just remember the timing of it... ugly. I wonder if that's not been forgotten. Edit: The timing of his agent's trade request caused quite a stir.

For one, Flacco won't be the most experienced QB. Having another QB you can share game experience stories and comparison with will be nice.

Some of the longtermers might remember Troy's old agent posting here in December.

Does anyone believe Troy could end up a starter on some team? And if so, what teams?

A backup I can see. I just don't see what team would take a chance on him being a starter.

Yup, because I had to confirm it was him. I am not sure what he thought the fans were going to do about it lol

As random as it is, I like this signing. It gives Joey a good mentor from somebody who has actually had success as an NFL quarterback (his previous "mentors" were Kyle Boller and Todd Bouman), and Marc is one of the classiest players in the NFL and you can never have too many good influences like that on a team.

I'm fairly certain he won't be a primary starter, ever. I was mostly referring to his, and his agent's, trade requests/comments last year during a playoff push.

Well look at it like this, we are not the ones running or watching O.T.A.'s. So maybe this move is a need and/or an upgrade from what we have now. :av-102:

I'm surprised but not terribly surprised. Its the kind of thing I didn't see coming, but once you sit down and think about it makes sense. Likely the deal has two purposes:
1) Have a veteran QB around to tutor Flacco.
2) Have a starting caliber, if somewhat washed up, QB if he goes down. Were Flacco to get injured later in the season we might be able to limp through some games running the ball with a competent QB.

Money is less of an issue in an uncapped year, but the # is still surprising.

As for corners there are no good free agents out there. The money we are willing to spend is not an issue.

P.S. Think we will see more of those two QB gadget plays Cam likes.

I hope not. If the offense produces like we expect. there should be no need for more trick plays.

Very true. We won't need to use trick plays to try to catch the defense off-guard. Not with the level of talent we seem to have on paper, the Ravens should be able to come out and win a game straight up.
