Marc Bulger: The Newest Raven

183 posts in this topic

Adamn Schefter just tweeted that Marc Bulger has signed a one year, 3.8 million dollar agreement to back-up Joe Flacco. Interesting though, I never saw this coming. Adam also said that Bulger is "just the back-up" we need in case Joe goes down. Not a bad signing at all, although unexpected. Bulger isn't who he used to be, but he'll be one of the best back-ups I can think of in the league. That leaves us with four quarterbacks on the roster. If one of them is cut, who's it going to be? I believe it's probably Beck.

Yup. I like it! they may cut troy.
Only way I can see them cutting Troy is to give him the chance to go do his thing somewhere else, like he seems so set on doing. In my opinion, Beck would be the better choice. He didn't impress me in Miami, and I don't think that will change much.

Don't have any real emotion one way or another about this and the only word that comes to mind is : Interesting.

Well, Welcome aboard Marc!

He's taken some serious punishment the past few seasons but I think he'll make a pretty good back-up.

Good signing.

This came out of no where and my only guess would be maybe Beck isn't cutting it, but I thought he was Cam's project. This could also show us how serious the heads of this team are in putting together a winner no matter what happens. Meaning if Flacco by chance does go down they have the right people behind him to continue success. I can't say that fully understand the signing but I haven't questioned these guys yet, and it seems that they have proved to know how to build a solid team so far.

3.8 million for a back up QB? Especially when there's no chance that he's becoming the starting qb (barring injury?) That sounds very suspicious. Could joe be hurt or something? I sure hope not.

I won't complain. I've always liked Bulger, as he seemed like a stand-up guy and a solid quarterback. Even though he isn't slinging the ball like he used to, he's extremely talented depth (at a position where we didn't have the as much talent in the depth players like we do at most of our other positions). It was an extremely surprising move, but a very good move as well. I'd feel much more comfortable with Bulger coming into a game than Smith or Beck, honestly.

One year deal for the uncapped season. I wouldn't go reading into it as some way to address some super secret of Joe being injured. I think it just shows you how much Baltimore wants to WIN this year. If Bulger wants to stay, they can always settle for something much less next year.
I sure hope not and I would think that something would have been said about the starting QB being injured to the point that the team needed to sign a backup. I just think that the team wants no excuses this season and wants a solid insurance policy in case Flacco does go down with an injury. Like I said earlier I don't completely understand it but I support.

Same here. The move makes sense from the perspective that the team doesn't want to be left scrambling for options if Flacco goes down. There is solid depth at virtually every position on the team, so all these little moves are merely providing insurance for later down the line. Besides, Bulger could also serve as a great tutor for Flacco; Bulger brings a wealth of experience with him, and given some of his more successful years in St. Louis, he also knows how to win. Bulger may not have the physical tools anymore to last an entire season as a starting QB, but he can certainly give Flacco the kind of advice about winning at the NFL level that Troy Smith and John Beck simply cannot.

I'm not going read much into it, but he would be a nice backup if Joe goes down. The interesting thing is why people think this means Smith will be leaving, if he is than he'll end up somewhere backing up another guy and not starting. I seriously don't think this has anything to do with Troy leaving, Beck most likely but not Troy since he knows the system. I think our QB position just got a little deeper.

3.8 Million for a backup? Normally I would complain if we had a Salary Cap, but with no salary cap, I'm not complaining. Plus it's only for 1 year so it's not like we are wasting 3.8 Million under the salary cap. So even if Bulger is getting paid 3.8 Million we'll still have room to get Ngata signed under a long term contract with the money front loaded due to having no cap.

Welcome to Baltimore Bulger, and your prize for being a backup will be one Super Bowl ring.

Bulger is more experienced and a better fit in this offense than Smith. He should also be able to help Flacco with the nuances of the game and help our offense as a whole. I like it.

That said, I hope he never steps on the field.

Jason La Canfora just tweeted about the deal as well, but apparently the deal has the possibility of being increased to $5.8 million with incentives.

Trade Troy!

Also think, would you rather have Troy Smith start a playoff game or Marc Bulger?

I wonder what kind of reaction this is causing at Troy's house.
Troy must be pretty angry.

No reason he can't outplay Marc in training camp and pre-season.

nope......those that want or need a backup would have nabbed Bulger. Smith was a 5th rd pick and his stock has only dropped. He will never be traded due to no trade value, only released or contract simply runs out.

I would have jokingly said "What about Cleveland? They seem to like stockpiling second string quarterbacks". However, they'd already said no to Smith.

Troy's stock didnt drop. I would say a 5th or 6th round pick would be just about right

cool...just opinions here, but the Ravens would love a 5th or 6th for Smith, but its not going to happen.

The problem is Troy hasn't shown a whole lot in his short time in the league so far. He's only played in 10 games, and put up some mediocre performances (not knocking him, I wouldn't mind him staying at all. I think he's fine depth. Just not starter material). Teams won't really want to give up draft picks for Smith, however if he were a free agent, then I could see him garnering some interest. Teams would be more inclined to take a chance on him when it isn't costing them a future player.
