Vincent Jackson: What Now?

9 posts in this topic

Vincent Jackson is holding out, and possibly until week 10. McNeil the starting LT is holding out as well.

What happens now? Will the Chargers keep them around and wait until week 10? According to the GM who has already made a statement that he is upset having to "part with two great players," it seems he has accepted the outcome and will not work on new contracts this season. Why then would SD keep the two around and pay them just to sit out? Perhaps they try to trade them, or release them and let them test free agency.

The ramifications are HUGE. Not only are they losing two elite, pro-bowl caliber players in KEY positions, it will severely effect Philip Rivers' contributions. He has lost his favorite target and the protector of his blind side. Good for us Ravens, as the Chargers are always a team near the top of the AFC playoff picture.

What if they do shop these guys around. I am most interested in Jackson. The GM has said goodbye, the fans may not forgive, but I hardly consider this as Jackson having character issues. He simply wants some security, and while I understand FO's not wanting to extend players with question marks around 2011, there are ways to get it done. How about a contract stipulation stating that if there's no football in 2011, they dont get paid. Maybe that doesn't work but it seems obvious.

But what if they look to trade him. I would definitely give up a 1st rounder to get Jackson. He is the type of big, fast target we've so coveted and have tried to find with guys like Eron Riley. He has a histroy with Cam. And, with him and Boldin, we would be set at WR for years to come. Sign him for 4 years around $28 mill, gaurentee 16, and give him 12 up front. Being re-united with Cam, and playing with a contender that can knock off his former club, and being with another elite guy like Boldin; I don't see any character concerns what-so-ever.

What do you think? Do you know what happens with those two guys from here? (I don't know much about the whole CBA with RFA's and holding out, what happens now?) I know SD still retains their rights, but will they put them on the block? If so, what would you give up to get them? Would you pull the trigger on Jackson if possible? Does he fit our system??

Before any of the "vets" jump on my back for this, let me please say this first: I am more interested in what happens as far as the whole situation in SD and how it affects our chances in the AFC than the whole acquiring bit. I don't even know if these guys can be traded or released at this point since not signing their tenders. Just thought if it were possible, I'd go for it since he is exaclty the receiver Cam wants most, not just being the prototype of Cam's kind of guy, but he IS CAMS GUY!! haha. I'd love to have them reunite here!

I think Vincent Jackson wants more money than 4 years 28 million. I donno. That's a lot of money to invest in the wide receiver position. I'll be happy to take him, but I doubt he will be dealt at a reasonable price that we will even consider. And I just doubt that the Chargers are gonna deal him when they feel that this is their year and losing Jackson would really hurt their offense

So we get our #1 wide receiver, and we want more??? Aren't we getting a little greedy. Money doesnt grow on trees.

Yes, because we only have Mason for 2 more years. Besides Boldin and Mason not much is known about our WRs. Stallworth may break out, but he hasn't played for a year and if he does break out he'll certainly want more than what we're paying him now. Behind that we don't have much. Boldin is a great #1 to have but he's not getting younger especially a couple years down the road. He will be a beast for us, but having only Boldin won't make our passing attack much different than when we had just Mason. We're very improved for this season, but going forward there are question marks.

That being said, Jackson may not be the asnwer. He may not be available, he may be too expensive... we dont know. All I really said was that if they try to deal him for a 1st rounder I'd like to see us take a shot. That could give us a dominant 1-2 punch for years to come. And, Jackson is the prototype of the receiver we've been trying to develop with our young guys, the tall, strong, fast deep threat and Red Zone beast.

Yes it's a stretch, and yes it's all speculative but I don't think that because we signed Boldin we are set at WR for the next 4 or 5 years. We are set for right now, but if a great opportunity arises to assure things for the future why not try?

I don't get exactly what you mean about this being their year and not wanting to lose him. They have lost him. He has said he's holding out until week 10 and the coaches, GM, and front office have all accepted that and are moving on. They've signed a WR (Reed) to fill that roster spot and a LT to fill in for McNeil.

It seems to me they'd be better off trading Jackson, even as good as he is, and getting something in return instead of having him sit and cause drama and problems for the organization. With the relationship having been hurt badly, I don't see the Chargers letting Jackson screw them over by sitting out all season and then at the end of the year turning around and signing him to a big money extension. Just doesn't make much sense. If they do thats just saying to all the other players that if you want more money just sit out all season, destroy the team's chances of winning, and then we'll pay you what you want afterwards.

With Q on the roster, this team needs to start developing WRs.

Whatever V-Jax does, he isn't coming here.

Like I said in the exact same thread in the Other Teams section.

V-Jax will not be signing the same deal that Boldin got. We got Boldin at a steal price. V-Jax is younger and will be able to command the going rate for WRs nowadays. Which is somewhere in the ballpark of 8-10 million per year.

I'm not the biggest fan of V-Jax. But I can't justify investing more money in our WR core. I'd rather see that be done on the OL.

We need a homegrown WR to grow with Flacco. Now is the perfect time to do so with Boldin here for a few years.

Didn't the mods already take this thread and put it in the "Other Teams" forum several hours ago?

Yes. Please continue the discussion in the original thread.
