Jackson And McNeil: What Happens Now?

I just think its stupid what San Diego is doing. They are going to lose the guy at the end of the year anyways. They should try and get anything they can right now. They should've took the best offer on the table at 4 pm. It's stupid, because now if they wait, his value will be less. Teams start thinking they can wait out the year and pick him up as a FA in 2011 w/o shelling out any draft picks.

The only reason why San Diego could be asking so much is because they want this guy to play into the playoffs with them. It's the only reason. Either they get a lot for him or they get to use his services. But how effective will his 'loaned' services be?

Jackson's agents are going off on Smith, calling him "The Lord of No Rings" which I thought was quite funny. He has handled this whole situation terribly. All I can say is: Thank goodness we have Ozzie.

Yeah AJ has gone about this all wrong... shoot he even took over Madden, I can't for the life of me get VJ from the Chargers. If I was the GM in SD, I would have first do whatever I could to get Marcus McNeil under a new long term contract, as you win games in the trenches and protecting Rivers would be the first thing I want to do. 2nd, I would have done everything possible to have gotten VJ to not hold out and play this season.

Actually sit and talk with VJ in person and try to settle it, and if he would tell me he wouldn't play without a new deal, I would tell him we'll find a trade partner who is willing to give you what you want... if you play this season. I would have tried to convince him to play this season, and tell him that he'll be traded in the off-season next year. If he didn't want to wait to get traded next year I would open up trade possibilities with who ever wanted him and not just certain teams.

That is how the Chargers should have went about this but since AJ wants to play hard ball he is screwing the team. Plus I would have jumped at the chance to give VJ to the Rams, because they will most likely have a high draft pick, and since they are only asking for a 2nd/3rd I would have took it since 2011 Draft Class is suppose to be a deep WR class.

Well as VJ remains a Charger and continues his holdout, another Charger has ended his holdout. LT Marcus McNeil has reported to the Chargers according to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81ad067e/article/chargers-lt-mcneill-ends-holdout-reports-to-team?module=breaking_news
It is not yet clear if McNeill has signed his restricted free-agent tender, which has been the subject of a prolonged holdout by the four-year veteran.

McNeill, a two-time Pro Bowler, stayed away from all of the Chargers' offseason activities, including training camp, while protesting the lack of a long-term contract.

McNeill's original one-year tender was worth $3.168 million, but was reduced by the Chargers by more than $2.5M when he did not sign by June 14.

The Chargers also placed McNeill, along with holdout WR Vincent Jackson, on the roster exempt list, meaning he will not be eligible to play until three weeks after signing his deal. That means McNeill will not be able to play before Week 6, when the team travels to St. Louis.
So that is one player down... and I fully expect a Long Term Contract to be worked out in the next few weeks and Rivers will have his blind side protector back.

Edit: According to PFT, McNeil has signed his 1 year tender.

Good Video.... but he must be AJ Smith or is too blind to see that AJ Smith is and will be the reason why the Chargers never reach the Super Bowl. LT looks like the LT of old with the Jets, Ryan Matthews is injured, who was that QB they let go to play Rivers.... oh yeah Super Bowl 44 MVP Drew Brees! Who fires a coach after going 14-2??? apparently AJ Smith does, if they still had Marty Ball they might have won a Super Bowl by now. I think I'm leaving something out... it's on the tip of my tounge, oh yeah 1-2!! Who's leading the AFC West... the Chiefs who are 3-0 including a win over the Chargers!

You know what will be funny, if LT helps leads the Jets to the playoffs, Matthews either ends up hurt most of the year or on IR, Rivers gets hurt because McNeil not playing at LT, and most importantly the Chargers are sitting at home watching the Playoffs,(and mostly watching the lonely Chiefs in the playoffs as Division Champs) than all this playing hardball will blow up in AJ's face. SD won't do nothing until AJ is gone.

I saw how frustrated Rivers was on Monday Night against the Chiefs, he looked frustrated against Seattle, Rivers don't even look like the Pro Bowl QB everyone once knew.

Well it looks like finally something is getting done in San Diego. The Chargers and LT Marcus McNeil have come to terms on a new 5 year deal. Also to note, McNeil can play this week when the Chargers play the Rams.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/10/11/chargers-marcus-mcneill-agree-to-new-contract/
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Chargers and McNeill have reached an agreement on a five-year contract extension.

Restricted free agent receiver Vincent Jackson, on the other hand, has still made no progress with the Chargers.
As Expected, I thought McNeil would get a new contract and VJ wouldn't. I see VJ being traded before the Week 6 Deadline.

Looks like V-Jax will have to report to the Chargers if he wants to become an unrestricted free agent come the end of the season. He needs to fill the requirements of a season accrued or else he would be under the uncapped CBA 6 year restricted FA hindrance.

Same go for Mankins of the Pats.

I think his value will drop due to not playing football for a year. I'll bet the Rams need a star WR like him.

This must be frustrating to Charger fans.

The Chargers are currently 1st in offensive including 1st in passing yards a game and 1st in overall defense including being 1st in passing defense. Yet they are 2-4.

That's just sad... but like Brian Billick said in America's Game the Story of the 2000 Ravens where he was asked why the offense couldn't score a TD... he said their job is to win games not score TDs. He than said he had one of the best passing attacks at BYU and he was fired after going 6-10 because they couldn't win games. That is exactly what is happening with the Chargers... sure they can put up numbers which shows the Chargers should trade VJ but they have to win games. To lose to the Rams of all people, The Chiefs in KC on a rainy night plus division games are always tough, but the Rams?? I thought it was the Redskins job to lose to the previous worst team of the league, not the Chargers.

AJ Smith is to blame for this, I'm not sure if McNeil played or not against the Rams but for Rivers to be sacked 7 times... wow Chargers need McNeil and help at that offensive line they got. Now if they are smart they should trade VJ for a 2nd, 3rd and a conditional 2012 pick and draft a good reciever next year and better offensive lineman, and with McNeil locked in it is safe to say to improve their guards and RT position.
