honestly, I think a better question to ask is is CMD really relevant anymore. Maybe for some light stuff; but other than that, does it get any better than OO inside a terminal??

But take my opinion with a grain of salt; I'm much more at home in a Unix terminal than a DOS one.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
<br />I'm planning on getting a 360 so I'll have that and a PS3 but I'm trying to decide which one to get Battlefield 3 for. Generally multiplatform games tend to perform better on the 360 but PS3 is getting the Battlefield 1943 extra with their copy of Battlefield 3. Decisions decisions..<br />
360 vs PS3 just screams 'flame war' lol ...
But I'd go with the PS3 version for the extra features. I dont game much, and when I do it's usually Madden/Oblivion/Bioshock, but I've never really noticed any real difference in performance in games between the two (I have both systems also, mainly for my boys).

It took me three or four years, but the 360 has really grown on me. In fact despite the hardware disadvantage, I find that I actually prefer it now to the PS3 (assuming it's used as just a gaming system, and not an all in one media center, because the PS3 wins that one hands down).

I've been planning on learning basic scripting over the summer while school is out. Any helpful sites, hints, tips or guides at all? I'll take everything you guys got.

when you say basic scripting, are you talking about Visual Basic scripting language, or just wanting to learn some basic programming / scripting techniques?

If you are talking about VB, I'd google 'VB tutorial' and choose one yourself, because people learn differently and the tutorials online vary greatly in presentation.
Two good places to start would be W3schools.com and Microsoft's support site.
But honestly, unless there is a specific reason you need to learn VB, I'd look into investing your efforts into another language. C# comes immediately to mind if you plan on making mainly Windows applications.

Or, if by 'basic scripting' you mean you want to get your feet wet in the programming world, then it really depends on what you want to do.
Are you wanting to build websites? Then I'd recommend first learning HTML / CSS. After you are comfortable in that (should only take a few weeks to have a good grasp of the fundamentals), then you'll want to learn a dynamic language, such as PHP.
For a pure web programming language, I recommend PHP over the others. Very powerful (sole purpose of existence is web development), awesome integration with MySQL (as well as other databases) and third party frameworks, free and supported on nearly all servers, and I'd say it is very simple to learn the basic concepts/principles.

Or if you're not looking for a web language but just a general use language that can do it all, take a good look at either Python or Ruby. Both offer extremely clean syntax and are famous for being very developer friendly (they are relatively easy to learn compared to C / C++ or Java, debugging is much better), and are very versatile and portable languages.
I program in Python, and can tell you that it has been very good to me. It's tried and true and stood the test of time, so it gets my recommendation.
Ruby is a good alternative to Python. While my knowledge of Ruby is nowhere near that of Python, I am sure you would be happy going that route as well. For a few reasons, I've come to the conclusion that Ruby is better for web development than Python, but Python is a better choice for most other things...but there is no 'wrong' choice when it comes to those two.
The important thing is to just pick a language and learn then master it; dont get too caught up in the 'which language should I learn' aspect. A good programmer is a good programmer..

So, to recap:

if you're looking to learn Visual Basic, then start at the two sites I mentioned above, and go from there.

If you want to learn web development, I strongly recommend PHP.

If you want to learn a general use language, I recommed Python.

Oh, and another reason to choose Python over Ruby...which of these sounds manlier:'Hey baby, I program in Python' or 'Hey baby, check out my Ruby Gems.'Exactly.

Lol Visual Basic. I'll probably study up that one some other time. I have no apparent need for that one right now.

I'll try installing Python over the summer and Google up some good guides.

Thanks for the recommendations. I appreciate it a lot.

Just out of curiosity, what do you need VB for? I'll admit that I'm not a fan of VB in the least, so take my opinions on it with a grain of salt..Btw, I think AwakentheDemon knows a good bit about VB and/or the Microsoft languages, you may want to hit him up for good learning resources.as for Python, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what it's capable of...when you get around to it, I'd suggest installing version 2.7. Versions 3.0+ are the latest releases, but aren't compatible with many extensions/modules yet, and most tutorials you come across will be based on the older versions (you'll see why it makes a difference as you go along).

I am a Geek with a low budget. to be honest I am still on vista and a dual core phenom(Athlon 7750BE) and cant afford to get the ram I need for more intense gaming right now running 2 GB of DDR2 1066 . video card aint to shabby though Radeon HD 4770 Cyclone edition from msi . I have been a geek for a long time until I was 23 I litteraly took geekdom to a new level lived in my dads subbasement lol . my first gaming wasnt pc oriented it was Atari/Calico then I went even further into gaming with pen and paper games such as D&D, Shadow Run, Obsideon, Werewolf. honestly I was I guess a hybrid , Goth/Geek/Jock for most of Highschool first date was when I was 19. but now a father of 1 raising a girl I swear will be geekier then I and she knows almost every nfl penalty signal , prolly from watching us play the steelers.

I'd recommend upgrading Vista to Windows 7. W7 does a much better job micromanaging your system resources, and your system runs cooler to boot.
Basically the idea there is even if you cant upgrade the hardware you have, you can still get the most out of your components.

I would not recommend searching thepiratebay with the key words 'Windows 7 activated' since software piracy is generally frowned upon.
Maybe you could borrow a legit copy, run it as a trial, reset the trial 3 times, and then reinstall after the 120 days are up.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Ended up biting the bullet and building a sandy bridge rig for myself...2600k i7 with water cooling (cant believe how cheap running water is these days), ASRock P67 mobo, 16 GB Ripjaws, took the old crappy 9800GT out of the server setup and put it in this, and an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD.Haven't done any benchmarks yet. This is going to be really interesting learning how to overclock these new processors....it feels weird not having a front side bus.Right now I have it running at 4.05 GHz, and at a constant 50% load the temps are LOWER than the older Q6600 Quad at idle running @ 3.6GHz. Quite a few people have this cpu running stable at 5.0 GHz, so that is what I'll be shooting for over the next couple days...so far, my initial impression are good, but I'm going to wait and see how this does when I push it hard before I decide if this was worth it or not.

Not sure if this us the place for it, but I suffered a virus attack today on my work computer. "XP Home Security 2012 Firewall Alert." For those of you who are not familiar with older versions of this virus, its pretty nasty. Wiped out my laptop in 08. No idea how it got in my work computer though. I'm praying I don't lose anything.

Well I know where to come for help on building my PC gaming rig in the next couple of months.

I'm really trying to decide whether I should go for AMD or Intel. AMD's are cheaper(which is good cause I'm on a budget) but I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and go for the more expensive I7 core. Suggestions?

Also, do you guys know of any good websites that help you build PCs up at good prices? It'd be really appreciated.

I think it really comes down to if you like overclocking. yeah amd is great, but Intel overclock much better.

i7 is great for anything, but if your going to be using the rig for gaming, a i5, even an i3 is perfect. even a socket 775 quad core like a Q9550 runs any game on the market with ease.

Yeah, Malwarebytes is pretty good, but misses some things here and there.....if that doesn't work, try Hitman Pro (3.5) and if that doesn't work, repair (not install) your operating system.

Sounds like Rogueware. I removed it from my friends Laptop a few months ago. Malwarebytes will remove it but the Rogueware might prevent you from downloading and/or installing it on your computer. I downloaded a program called RKill which terminates the Rougeware temporarily giving you enough time to install and scan with Malwarebytes!

I suggest downloading the two programs on a different computer and copying them to a Pen Drive. If RKill and Malwarebytes are still being blocked by the Rogueware it's recommended to rename them to iExplore.exe and explorer.exe.

Just run RKill, then when the process is finished, install, update and do a full scan with Malwarebytes. It will take some time but it should detect the Rogueware. Then it's just a case of removing it and rebooting.

Hope this helps.

Intel vs. AMD became a pretty moot debate a few years ago. Intel's last generation of cpu (Core2Duo/Quad) still outperforms AMD's top of the line stuff (AMD's Bulldozer may change that), and you can buy them for next to nothing, so they are budget friendly.

As you can see, $220 for an unlocked beast. AMD cant touch that price - performance ratio.

Also, newegg.com is amazing. I swear by them.

That should do it for you.

Thanks for the advise folks. I'm not really in the position to do anything as it's my work computer and our MIS department has this responsibility as well as administrative rights, but I will note this info should I have an issue on my laptop Thanks again.

Just wanted everyone else to be aware. This is a nasty sucker.

Is the iPad 2 worth it? I'm going to have some spare money soon and I want to buy something nice but I'm not sure if it's worth it if I already have a laptop and a netbook(even though my netbook's been messing up lately). What do you guys think?

Don't know if the 2 is worth it, but I have an original iPad and love it. There's nothing like kicking back in the recliner and reading the forums, playing a little Angry Birds, doing my "work", work, etc. The long battery life and clear screen resolution makes it great. I don't even take the laptop with me when I travel any more. Keep in mind, though, that it doesn't really multi-task and it doesn't (yet) run Flash. I mind the lack of multi-tasking, but lack of Flash has not been a problem.
