Guilty!

Have two different rigs; each for a specific purpose.

The one I'm on now is what I use for programming/development --

- Intel Q6600 Quad overclocked to 3.6Ghz (400 x 9)
- Biostar TP45 HP mobo
- 8 GB OCZ Platinum RAM ( overclocked to 1000MHz 5-5-5-15 )
- WD VelociRaptor (10k rpm)
- Nvidia 9800GT GPU overclocked to 721MHz and RAM @ 1008MHz
- T.R.U.E. 120 heatsink and Scythe 120mm fan (168cfm)

nice, current rig for Gaming.

- Q9550 @ 3.8ghz
- ASUS P5Q SE2
- Gskill Ripjaws 4GB 1200Mhz @ 1333Mhz 6-6-6-12
- WD 1TB Black (X2)
- ATi (2x) 4890 XXX 1Ghz core
- Prolimatech Megashadow with Scythe S-Flex Push pull

everything is a easy maxout now. Games just look amazing. Consoles just look like garbage, lol.

http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=2lnjpmh&s=5

also, consoles owners, when your setting your consoles to run at 1080p on your hdtv's, games are not running any higher than 720p. Only the consoles dashbaord will run at the native.

how long ago were those classes? Linux distros haven't really been useful for home users until around three years ago, so unless someone was using it for a specific purpose (server, software development, downloading porn virus free) I wouldn't be surprised at lack of general interest.

My Linux/OS was in my first year, so about two years ago.

Okay pretty excited over this!I've been running my home server on my old setup, which consists of:
- Intel Q6600 Quad overclocked to 3.6GHz
- 8 GB OCZ Ram (1000MHz @ 5-5-5-12)
- WD Caviar Black hard drive
I wanted to squeeze more performance out of the server, and the hard drive, although the fastest 7200rpm drive available, is clearly the bottleneck in the system. Time to upgrade; the only question I had was whether I should run a pair of Western Digital Velociraptors in RAID ( the new VR are insane ) or do I jump on the SSD bandwagon.

After a lot of thought, I decided the best route to go was to run the server on an SSD and run the database on the velociraptors in RAID. My databases are huge, and I cant justify the costs of an adequate sized SSD, so that led to the decision of putting the databases in a HDD raid configuration.
Anyway! Just wanted to post the results of this new setup, for anyone considering getting either an SSD or a new Velociraptor.

I'll start with the SSD.I got an OCZ Vertex 2 60GB ssd for the server install.Talk about obscene! It actually surpassed the factory read / write specs (285 MB/s read and 275 MB/s write with 250 MB/s sustained write) in some benchmarks. The server I installed is based on Linux Fedora 15. Installation was all of 14 mins. After I had the server up and running, I had over 2 GB worth of files to transfer from the old hard drive -- keep in mind most of these files are PHP and Smarty scripts that are very small, between 2kb - 100kb each. The transfer was incredibly fast, under 20 seconds. The old hard drive just could not feed the SSD fast enough, else the transfer time would probably have been cut in half.

Then there are the two Velociraptors in RAID 0.Cant lie, I am skeptical of Western Digital's claim that the new gen VR are significantly faster than the second generation; mainly because despite it running on the SATA 3 interface, their specs indicate they still dont even come close to saturating SATA 2. I did not test the VR individually, instead I immediately set up RAID, so I'll assume the manufacturer specs are accurate. After running benchmarks, I was shocked to find that running the VR in RAID 0 more than DOUBLED the specs of a single VR in some tests, and actually went toe to toe with the SSD in read / write throughput. Now keep in mind that the seek and access times on any SSD is far superior to a HDD, so in real world useage, the VR will be significantly slower than the SSD under most conditions. But that does not take away from the fact that the VR matched the SSD in raw output.

In summary, what can I say...the SSD lived up to it's hype (although I think I should note that I thoroughly researched A LOT of different SSD before deciding on the OCZ Vertex 2. Not all SSD are created equal). But I was blown away by how fast the Velociraptors were, and very pleasantly surprised.

My recommendation to anyone considering either of these two products:

1. Be careful when shopping for SSD. Reliability issues are a thing of the past, but performance will vary wildly, and some SSD do not reach their advertised speeds on certain chipsets. If you do your homework first, an SSD truly is the best performance upgrade you can make (for most users. Gamers, and anyone running intense computational applications, won't see these huge gains).

2. While the Velociraptors blew me away, I would only spend the money on them if the following two conditions are true:

a- storage space is a necessity
b- you plan on running them in RAID 0 (or an equivalent varient of RAID).

Although I did not test the drives individually, if the manufacturer specs are accurate (which according to my RAID benchmarks, they seem to be) then their performance to price ratio is worse than that of most any current SSD.Basically if storage is not a big deal (get a cheap 2TB HDD for storage), there is no reason to choose a VR over an SSD.

Anybody out there use KDE on Linux? I installed Fedora 14 a couple weeks ago, and have both Gnome and KDE installed. KDE freezes up on me within a few mins of logging in. I'm nearly certain it is an issue with Compiz-Fusion and the desktop effects ... is anyone else experiencing these issues and found a resolution for them?

if you like Ubuntu, try out Linux Mint. Much nicer I think, and they just released a Debian spinoff.

Anyone used Fedora 15 yet? I'm kinda peeved; Fedora has long been my favorite, and true to form, they now come with Gnome 3 by default. I was hyped about that, until I used Gnome 3 and took all of two minutes to realize they (gnome) just ripped off Mac's craptastic Finder. I hate Finder (come to think of it, not a fan of Mac either), and peeved an otherwise awesome OS is saddled with that crap. Fortunately, KDE still rocks.

Nope I am just learning lol. My husband is a DBA and a cyber security expert and has many Microsoft certifications. My sons learned programing and networking from almost birth. My 18 yo has been fixing computers since he was about 7, if someone was getting a new one he would take apart the old one and put it back together or strip it for parts. Most kids had legos he has computet parts.

We have a 50" Plasma in our basement/unofficial Ravens room and a 46" LED in the den room upstairs. The Plasma's picture is just as good as the day we bought it. They are still a very good, cheaper alternative.

Overclocked q9550 preforms the same as a i7 IN GAMES. usage never goes above 60%. until devs start taking advantage of the more powerful hardware, no reason to go sandybridge.

I just wanted to get in on the 'what year are you in' lol...And yeah, there's really no reason to upgrade from that for now, they are great cpu's; with that cpu and gpu you can play anything you want.I was considering upgrading to the 2600k, but I dont see much benefit in it either for my purposes; I run my Q6600 @ 3.6GHz, other than occasional movie encoding and running Folding, I dont do much that really pushes it to it's edge. But man, I was checking out the i7 benchmarks ...and wow, they put our Quads in the Stone Age. I'm thinking about making the jump anyway, just as a total 'I want that shiny new toy' type thing...damn Intel and their purdy processors..

I always wanted to know the formula for geek years. Always knew it was close to dog years, but 5.6666 to every 1 makes sense.

Thanks!!

I'm planning on getting a 360 so I'll have that and a PS3 but I'm trying to decide which one to get Battlefield 3 for. Generally multiplatform games tend to perform better on the 360 but PS3 is getting the Battlefield 1943 extra with their copy of Battlefield 3. Decisions decisions..
