Geek Speak

102 posts in this topic

My name is Andrew, and I'm a geek.
There, I feel so much better now that I've confessed

Anyone else want to come out the closet?

Soo...tonight was a real "wild" one for me...just pulled an all nighter finishing up my latest website. And about time, I planned on launching this site almost a year ago. Tonight was the culmination of two and a half years worth of coding, debugging and designing! It's a dating site (<PM ME> if anyone happens to be interested -- first thousand members get their first month free...will be go live near the end of the month).

I'm a PHP developer by trade, and working on learning Perl and C++. Also will be starting a custom computer sales and services shop soon (another project I was planning on getting up and running by last year).

So whether it's the hardware or software side, I'm pretty well obssessed with computers

--------------------------------------------------------------------

That's a little about me and my fascination...is there anyone out there who won't stare at me with a blank, bored look on their face if I start gushing over how much I love Linux Fedora, how I hate GRUB2 or the pros and cons of ext4 verse XFS verse ZFS filesystems??

What are your favorite things tech related (not just computer -- if you're a gamer, or home theater afficianado, you're a geek to -- whether you own up to it or not lol )

Windows 7 or Mac or Linux (Any distro of your choice)?
PS3 or 360?
Plasma or LCD?
PHP or ASP or ColdFusion?
Intel or AMD?

just a few random questions to get the ball rolling.

*tisk tisk* You know you can't be advertising your dating site like that. Keep it to unsolicited PM's, yo. ;)

That said...

Everyone knows that PS3 is my passion, though I love video games in general. Never had I done so much research on any single big-ticket product that I've purchased myself. I know all of its features in-and-out and it's done everything I've wanted it to do and more. Even with its recognized flaws, I still praise it for all that it does right and all the untapped potential that keeps unraveling with each new title and new firmware update.

I have a reasonably extensive collection of PS3 titles, with most of them being the big-name titles that top the sales charts. I pretty much own a casual gamer's dream when it comes to those AAA titles. I think my collection has reached 40-45 PS3 games now, with more to be added in the coming months.

I prefer the word "informing"...advertising makes me look like a spammer lol.

See, I have the PS3 and the 360, and it's tough to make a choice on those two.
Prior to the 360, I have always been an unabashed PS fanboy. PS3 is no different...All in all, it is the only gaming system a proper geek would own (I can install Linux on my PlayStation??? 'Nuff said)

And the 360, have to admit, took a while for me to warm up to. The first year or so that I had it, was the redheaded step child of my gaming systems.

But....I'm really starting to enjoy it. Hate to say so, but the games are simply better on the 360. Graphics are fantastic of course, but in this day and age, that hardly means anything anymore.
I still remember the original NES and its 8 bit processing power haha. But I'll be damned if Super Mario 3 isnt the most fun I've ever had outside of a wafflehouse.

Technology has come so insanely far over the past twenty years. I remember asking my dad, what the hell is the internet, and why do we need this Prodigy thing to surf on it....rolls eyes....that was waaay back in 1990/1991. Now I surf this internt thing on my cellphone (another word that would have gotten a blank stare at the time, lol...anyone remember how cordless phones were all the rage and a big deal back then--and i mean BIG in more ways than one) and write code onto a webserver that will interact with strangers all over the planet and process their requests and queries -- all without me even being present. technology is a wonderful thing :)

But, console exclusivity is becoming a thing of the past now; it's just not economically viable for most publishers and developers to stay loyal to one console, so the majority of big-name games on the market are multi-platform or at least released cross-platform for the "big two" (Sony and Microsoft). The only real advantage of owning one system over another is if you're such a techno-phile that you notice the slightest difference in resolution or you happen to encounter the occasional bug that may exist on one platform but not the other -- an inherent flaw that comes with developing the same game for only one console and merely porting to the other. That's why, despite the initial difficulties in developing for the PS3, companies are starting to do their multi-platform games on the PS3 first before porting to the 360, as it would essentially be "porting down" instead of "porting up" since the PS3 is more powerful.

K, maybe if I start a mudslinging contest, I'll draw more responses lol.

Time to take a stand :GRR:

Intel >>> than anything AMD can dream of.

Now if that doesn't stir a few geeks up, I'm going to bring up KDE vs Gnome.

If that doesn't start a holy war, then we can always resort to the Windows vs Mac vs Linux pissing contest.

Windows, Mac, and Linux all do things well in their own right. I see Mac and Linux as being on opposite ends of the spectrum and Windows as a medium, where some users are happy with some things but unhappy with others. The majority of people I know who use Mac hate Linux, the majority of people I know who use Linux hate Mac, but there's always a soft spot for Windows and some of the things that Windows does right -- while also an undying hatred for the things that Windows does wrong. I honestly don't know anyone (personally) who likes both Linux and Mac, as they are two vastly different operating systems with a vastly different set of users that they cater to.

- Switched to Mac about 2 years ago... I'll never go back to Windows
- 360
- LCD
- I'm not a programmer, so my choice is moot
- Intel

I have to admit, I didn't know anything about Mac computers when I bought mine. My Windows laptop had a new virus practically everyday, I had reformatted three times in a month and I was done. SO I went to Towson Town Mall, saw the Apple store, walked in at complete random and walked out with a new alum. macbook. Took me a few days to figure everything out, but wow- I'll never go back to WIndows. The joys of built in behind the scenes never know it's there virus protection, no worries about trojans, malware or any of that crap, frequent FREE updates from Apple, immense customization, never crashes, rarely reboot, onyx is a godlike program (best program I've ever used on my mac), etc, etc, etc, etc. Plus it's the most durable laptop I ever owned.

I'm such a believer in Mac now that both my parents, my best friend and my room-mate have switched. Only thing I don't have/refuse to own is the Iphone. I'm a droid user (mostly because I loathe AT&T).

But see, once everyone starts using a Mac, then malware will become widespread with Mac users as well. Just because you never see it yourself doesn't mean it's not out there. The only reason why Windows operating systems are the most infected is because it's the most commonly-used OS in the world, making it more worth a programmer's time to go after the OS with the most valuable data for the taking.

Furthermore, the fallacy of "ultimate security" that many Mac users operate under (not including yourself), makes them especially susceptible to malware. Responsible computing will always do more to protect you from malware than any operating system or software can.

AMD is great on a smaller budget, but intel chips overclock much better. I went with an intel Q9550 for my Rig. Stable at 4ghz right now, on air. Megahalems cooling.

and lcd is much better than plasma. Plasma run much hotter and have Image burn in.

Windows 7 by far, then any Linux os, then a hackintosh, then a mac.

PC > Consoles. Even tho i play both.

Ati or Nvidia? I run 2X 4890's xxx editions 1ghz cores.

I like doing consoles mods when Im not building PC's for friends or myself. here are a few of mine. Theres not many cosmetic or hardware mods for PS3, so I have done mostly Xbox 360 and ps2 firmware mods, and cosmetic

Just an FYI.... burn-in hasn''t been much of an issues for plasmas in years; since the second generation came out in fact.

Intel is where it's at...with it's cutting edge instruction set support, and the fact that traditionally Intel focused on L2 cache rather than L3, is what really sets it apart IMO....and the fact that you can overclock the shiz out of them doesn't hurt either. There's a reason Intel is considered the premium chip and AMD the budget brand...

I really like where Windows is headed. Windows 7 is the best OS Mirosoft has made to date; although they didn't exactly set the bar high with their previous crapware.
How does it compare to Linux and Mac?
As always, it depends on what you need your computer to do...Windows is king when it comes to gaming and audio/video (from a casual user point of view...for more advanced tasks, Linux is what you want). Windows still rules the office apps as well.
But I dont see it ever overtaking Linux in other areas...as a server or programming environment, Linux rules with an iron fist. With the emrgence of Linux Mint and Ubuntu(I like to think of Mint as Linux's equivalent of a Mac...easy to use, everything is done for you, aimed at the casual user who isn't technically inclined), the Linux platform has really paved it's way to becoming the ultimate general purpose OS.
Then of course you still have the hardcore Linux platforms, each distro aimed at a particular market. My personal favorite is Linux Fedora, which I think gives the perfect balance of ease of use for casual users and under-the-hood hackability for the hardcore techies.
But you know what REALLY pisses me off about Windows 7? Everyone is praising what a beautiful and elegant interface it has...and rightfully so. It is, in my opinion, the sexiest out there. BUT...it sure does look like an exact replica of the KDE environment. What next...are they going to rip off Compiz from Linux too? I mean I know that stealing ideas is part of the game (my favorite is how Mac users tried to claim Apple invented the dock (they didn't), and then whined when Windows came out with their own), but this gets to me because Gates has a long history of bashing Linux in subtle ways. Guess if you cant beat them, join them?

I know I haven't said much about Mac yet....but don't really see any need to. I'm not one of those Mac haters, but I just dont see how it compares to Windows or Linux in any way. Their hardware is waaayyy overpriced, and vastly inferior when compared to what you can create on a Windows or Linux box (fun fact -- over 480 of the top 500 supercomputers in the world run on a Linux operating system, 14 on Windows, 2 on a Mac and one runs openSolaris).
And the applications...the Mac has some excellent apps, but nothing you can't do as well or better in Windows or Linux. Of course there may be the oddball exception, but on a whole, that's how it is. On the other hand, there are a lot of things those two OS's do better than a Mac.
Plus I just feel Macs are too limiting, and the fact that I dont want a bright *** apple glowing on all my stuff does it for me too lol.

Currently I have 6 (yes SIX) operating systems installed on my computer. Windows XP, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Linux FEL (Fedora Electronics Lab), Linux Fedora 13 and Linux Mint.

Why 6 OS's? I have each for a reason....
Windows XP is there only for viewing and testing my work on websites, to ensure everything looks and functions properly on that dinosaur (which is important since half the world still uses it).
Windows Server 2008...well, just because I like it, and like to fiddle with servers.
Windows 7 because it is a wonderful general purpose system, and has taken great strides in exorcising old demons such as instability and performance *cough XP*. Plus, I absolutely love the Adobe programs...Dreamweaver has saved me countless hours of coding, and Fireworks/Photoshop/Illustrator are nothing short of mind-blowing.
Linux FEL because I'm dabbling in some truly geeky stuff that no one will probably care to hear about..
Linux Fedora due to reasons already mentioned...stability, security, amazing programming environment, performance and hackability...basically its the total package.
Linux Mint is there when I want to take it easy and just surf the web or download perfectly legal (lol) torrents without worrying about malware. Plus it's just a nice OS.

I find myself using Fedora about 50% of the time, Windows 7 about 30% of the time, and the rest of the time split between the other systems.

Macs are Unix derived systems (like Linux), so it inherently provides you with a much more secure architecture....to an extent.

But dont be fooled into thinking that because you have a Unix system that you are immune to malware. Certain people out there DEPEND on you believing that nonsense, and will promote that idea themselves to foster that false sense of security. Hardly anyone writes virii these days...the money is in worms and trojans and rootkits.
You'd probably be shocked if you found out how easy it is to do even the simplest of things, like stealing login information (bank online much?), regardless of what operating system is being used, because it's not necessarily your machine that gets exploited, but certain applications and processes that are not tied directly to the OS itself.
It may be unfortunate, but there are many people out there whose honor does not match their brilliance...in the underground, they say that everyone hears about the good crackers, but the great ones are unknown.

My brother nearly pooped himself when I explained to him that many trojans are undetectable...and that an antivirus program cannot detect malware coded in Java. Fun stuff...takes some of the joy out of getting on the internet.

So, if anyone cares, lol ...

I wanted to get a feel for the btrfs file system, and compare it's performance to ext4, because I am reinstalling Linux Fedora 14 and have been using ext4 since it's release (I disabled journaling on ext4 for performance gains -- I really don't think it is necessary on non mission-critical machines anyway).

Honestly, seat of pants evaluation tells me no noticeable difference in performance; however I noticed that btrfs seems to use less system resources than ext4 does...that's a plus, means that it is more efficient. BTRFS is supposed to be the mother of all filesystems once it has matured, so I'm gonna stick with this for a bit.

Any openSolaris users here? How do you think ZFS compares to ext4?

You're trying to get Franny on me, aren't ya??

I haven't uploaded the site yet, my server just upgraded to PHP version 5.3 and it's wreaking havoc with the existing code, so another setback to deal with before the site goes live.
The URL is keystonepersonals d0t com. Right now, all you'll see is the default server gateway until the site is uploaded. It's a dating site for Pennsylvania/Md residents ... I'm also starting a non profit organization that will collaborate with the website; we'll be donating 10% of the proceeds from the website to a local school each year.

But just an FYI, we're not public (yet). Just a startup right now still in the funding stages for marketing.
We'll be focusing on "traditional" dating values, and member screening, while serving the local area. Being regional is the main attraction/benefit of the site, so while the advertising will take place in a few select areas, they will be targeted heavily. Then hopefully, we grow from there.

Anybody out there use KDE on Linux? I installed Fedora 14 a couple weeks ago, and have both Gnome and KDE installed. KDE freezes up on me within a few mins of logging in. I'm nearly certain it is an issue with Compiz-Fusion and the desktop effects ... is anyone else experiencing these issues and found a resolution for them?

Windows 7 or Mac or Linux (Any distro of your choice)?
PS3 or 360?
Plasma or LCD?
PHP or ASP or ColdFusion?
Intel or AMD?

I have Windows 7 and love it. I was thinking of dual booting with Linux because the recommendation of a friend, but probably never will. Just too much HDD space used up on a laptop with having the same apps installed multiple times. Mac I like, it would love a Macbook Pro, but I think that has got to be the most overpriced equipment from my standpoint, a guy that isn't attracted to it much.
I own a 360, and wouldn't turn back. I almost got a PS3, but after my receiver failed, I have focused on upgrading my home theater system. Got a new receiver, new sub (old power transformer failed) nice Polk center speaker, and soon I will replace the fronts then rears. But back to the xbox, I have had to send one back, which sucks. But other than that the only problems I've had are with Halo, go figure M$. Only reason I would really prefer a PS3 is God of War III.
Plasma TVs are great, and they had the advantage in some areas, But with LED-LCD TVs now, they don't. These TVs have great contrast ratio, brightness, vivid colors, good response times, low power consumption. I have a Sharp, sadly not Quatron I was on a tight budget, it is full-array LED. It doesn't have the spot dimming (idk the correct term) that other LED TVs do. But the whites on it are phenomenal, blacks are very good, and I love how the light does not bleed from the side.
I owned an AMD processor in my original build, but that was years ago, back when even the Athlon X2s were uncommon. After the Core 2 Duo, AMD never really caught up in my opinion. I purchased an Intel and I love it. Overclocks fine in a pc that has gradually accumulated more and more hard drives going from everyday PC to a media pc.I purchased a Toshiba laptop recently to help me with school, use less power, and because I don't have comfortable access to my PC. It has the AMD Turion II Neo K625. It does a lot for 1.5ghz. Thinking back to the days when Intel was coming out with higher and higher ghz processors, thinking we would see 10-15 before 2010, yet this 1.5 can do more than those Pentiums that just kept cranking up the ghz. Stilll surely not enough for someone that wants a hardcore gaming PC, but when the hardest thing it has to do is multitask and watch HD videos on Youtube, it does great.
<br />I was never big on Linux. Took a OS/Linux class in college, and wasn't too blown away. So I really didn't pay too much attention to it. Thankfully, the job I interviewed for last thursday doesn't use Linux... they use Macs...<br />
how long ago were those classes? Linux distros haven't really been useful for home users until around three years ago, so unless someone was using it for a specific purpose (server, software development, downloading porn virus free) I wouldn't be surprised at lack of general interest.
