Breakout Player: Ravens 2010 Team

54 posts in this topic

Each year, it seems, the Ravens have some under the radar player becomes a major contributor, or a rookie draftee far exceeds expectations or far surpasses a previous seasons performance to become a star (Rice, Flacco, Gaither, Suggs, Scot, Thomas, Webb, Ellerbe just to name a few in recent seasons) . Whether it's an UDFA or a draft pick from a couple years ago, it just seems inevitable that some Ravens player bursts onto the scene each year.

Will Mount Cody not just be effective rotating in, but become the starter and one of the leagues premier DT's. Will Kindle accumulate 7-10 sacks... or more? Will CB Fisher not just supply depth but become a great starter? or maybe even one of the UDFA rookies? Will Kruger and his extra bulk seemlessly make the transition to 3-4 DE, and become an effective pass rusher? Will one of our young receivers break the trend, and actually become a major contributor? One of the TE's? Art Jones? Harewood??.... it could be anyone.

These are just a few possibilites, and usually it's someone that few see coming. Tell us who you think it will be, show your skills at accessing talent, and have the proof that you were one of the first to call it!

Kruger is one that comes to mind. With him gaining weight and putting on muscle to become a 3-4 defensive end, I expect him to do a great job this season and get some sacks subbing for Pryce on third downs. Kruger will silence the critics this season. I do expect Kindle and Cody to contribute in some way this season, but much sooner than Kruger did last year. I expect Cody to be groomed to be our NT of the future and come in every once in a while for Gregg, and Kindle to come in for Jarret Johnson and keeping him fresh throughout the season. I like Jarret Johnson but if Kindle pans out, the thought of Suggs rushing from the right side and Kindle rushing on the left side along with the pressure of our defensive line... scary.

I'm going to be a broken record but I think Stallworth in the #3 slot has the potential to be a match-up nightmare to nickel backs and safeties . . . I'd consider him Breakout-eligible considering his stint in the NFL hasn't really been "normal" by any means. Flacco's cannon and Stallworth's speed could = BIG numbers.

If I had to choose a more traditional candidate, I'll take Kruger, hands down.

I'll take David Reed as an ST punt/kick returner. Reminds me a lot of Jermaine Lewis in his abilities and could be the "under the radar" weapon we have missed for so long. It would be great to dominate in the return game again!

I think the title of this video is a bit exaggerated. This is no where near the best hit of the decade . . . which is what concerns me about Reed's return ability. Now in finding this I also found the 91 yard return touchdown so hopefully this was just a once in a blue moon ordeal.

I think that in 2010 david Reed will be our breakout player. He came from a no name college where he dominated and was a giant threat. He has the speed and hands to possibly beat out Stallworth and be our #3 receiver by the end of the season.

I like Fox to breakout, fully, into an elite tier corner. This FO doesn't give big money to FAs very often, so you have to think they thought this guy could ball. I think it's fair to give him last year as an adjustment year. He played far better in the second half of the year so it's reasonable to assume that he will continue to get better as he gets further acclimatised with the system. An improved pass rush will make life much easier for him also.

My tip for a break-out season is Dennis Pitta: I just get the impression that this guy is playmaker, not just because of his great hands and physique but also his footballing smarts. I think he'll be a valuable contributor to our passing attack and provide Flacco with another outlet receiver who gets the tough yards and moves the chains.

On the flip side I think Ellerbe will be a major player on our defense. I love the way he reads/plays the game and the more snaps he sees the more disruptive he will be. I think Ray will love playing alongside him and he will make our defense as a whole much stronger than last year.

Bring on the Jets

Domonique Foxworth will emerge as a Pro Bowl cornerback, I also think Kruger will start to show what he can as a 3rd down pass rusher from defensive end.

Having faith in our boys is fine but I just don't see Kruger doing anything significant this season. He was a basically a healthy scratch last year and is now struggling with his new weight, he's also sitting behind Redding and Pryce in the rotation.

i think webb comes back 100% and now realizing it can all slip away in the blink of an eye, dedicates himself to immediate excellence. if he can be back by training camp i think hes a probowl caliber cornerback this year. if he misses a few games, and takes a few more getting adjusted he will become our #1 and show that he will be a top-notch, lockdown CB for years to come.

Barring injury, I see Joe having the breakout season he should have had last season. He's got the physical tools and now the weapons to throw to.

Paul Krueger. Now that he'll be seeing even more reps, and now that he's more of a 3-4 DE on the same line as Ngata and sometimes Cody, I like his chances of becoming a very productive pass rusher. He'll also help free up Suggs/Kindle/Johnson on the outside.

And with this added pressure up front, it'll make Foxworth even better in the back end. He may quietly have a pro bowl type season also.

Utah is a no name college? Plenty of NFL players have come from there. Anyway, I have to go with Reed too. Even with that big hit he pops right up he is incredibly tough for his size (6'1 190) and isn't afraid to go over the middle or conversely, fly down the sideline. I could compare him to Anquan Boldin's physicality with Donte Stallworth's speed. That's an outstanding combination. If given a chance, this guy could really take off.

Haloti Ngata will have his first breakout year STATS wise.

I would LOVE to see Haloti rack up 70 tackles and 6 sacks, and a couple picks to boot. He's certainly capable of it, even though teams concentrate on stopping him.

I'm satisfied at the simple thought of how many different names have been plugged in this thread. It really shows the talent this organization brings in on a regular basis.

I'd love to see the entire roster become an "x-factor" of sorts, but the one that must absolutely breakout this year is Flacco. With the newly acquired targets, I see him putting his name in the hat of upper echelon QBs.

Hopefully Mount Cody gets in the rotation a bit; should allow for Ngata to do that.

This was my reasoning of picking Ngata, I feel Cody will make a lot of space for our monster.

I actually like Marshal Yanda here. He's got a good chance to make his first Pro Bowl, though Chris Kemoeatu has a good chance to revisit just because of Pittsburgh's influence, as does Ben Grubbs with his first round status.

I think Marshal's nastier and more consistent than either of them, though. He pulls as well as Chester and is one of the strongest guys on the team, though you wouldn't necessarily know it looking at him. The success of our running game gives him a chance for recognition beyond this team, at least much as "boring" offensive linemen can muster.

Michael Oher would be in consideration, but everyone and their mother already knows about him.
